So, which Chopin piece do you think is the SADDEST - one of these two or a different one? By the way, I misspoke in the video and mislabeled the mazurka - it is Op.17, not 11. Oops! definitely the first nocturne 20 you played, but that's mainly from the connection to the sad movie "The Pianist". My saddest Chopin: Mazurka 17/4 (Cries and Whispers), Prelude 28/4, Etude 25/7 Nocturnes 27/2 and 48/1, and Sonata op 35 Pt 3 of course. Anyway, well played by you. I've been struggling for 60 years to get Maz 17/4 "just right".
@@leongatha6 All good choices, and for good reasons. And thanks for the kind words. I know what you mean about the mazurka - I don't feel I'll ever get it "just right" but I felt like recording it anyway.
I don't know why i just love listening to sad music. I started my piano class about 3 weeks ago. Im definitely playing this when I'm good
Enjoy the process!
Thank you for the lovely rendition of both pieces. As a Pole I interpret those compositions not as sad at all but more reflective and sentimental and yes, joyful journey throughout the landscape of my Polish soul. Pure pleasure.
Thanks for your kind words. It's true that "sad" does not adequately describe these pieces - it is more of a convenient umbrella term for so many emotions that are expressed in the music. To me they are definitely sad but in a way that feels so deeply satisfying - both heartbreaking and deeply moving. Chopin was such an incredible composer. My grandparents were born in Poland and I would love to visit Poland.
Nocturne in C# Minor is the saddest, especially since the Movie The Pianist
Yes, it was the perfect piece for that movie.
Nocturne in C# Minor is the saddest piano piece I know of.
Thanks for your feedback!
Jonathan, the saddest Nocturne in C Minor OP Posthumous played by yourself most skillfully I may say.
Thank you very much for your feedback and kind words!
Nocturne Op. 72 No. 1 E Minor. If you've ever wondered what it's like to listen to a piano weep in regret and remorse, that is definitely the piece.
Yes, that is true.
Mazurca io 11 n. 4 is the saddest between the pieces you played in this video ... but the absolute saddest in my opinion is Prelude op 28 n. 4
Good choice. I was considering including that prelude in the choices. I decided to narrow it down to two pieces because I didn't want my video to be too long and lose viewers, but your choice is definitely a candidate for "Saddest Chopin Piece". By the way, I misspoke in the video - the Mazurka is Op. 17, not 11. Oops!
What could be sadder than the third movement of his piano sonata no. 2, the Funeral March?
True, but since it's a movement from a piece I didn't consider it; I was only considering full pieces.
Got me on a technicality. Someday when you're in a Chopin mood I would love to hear you play your favorite Chopin ballade!@@JonathanGeffnerPianist
@@davidjohnson6553 I'd love to do that. I wish I had the time to learn/review/prepare and record all the pieces I love. Piano playing isn't my career, but I'm making an effort to devote more time to it now than I've done in decades.
I hope that you do. You play beautifully and I'd love to hear more. (Don't forget... UA-cam channels can make $$.)@@JonathanGeffnerPianist
@@davidjohnson6553 Thank you for your kind words, but I highly doubt that this channel will ever make money. Even my main channel which has over 8K subscribers doesn't make any money. But I'm enjoying this anyway.
I love to listen to such beautiful music but the sad one is NOCTURNE in C Minor
Thanks for your feedback and reminding me about that piece. It is such a beautiful piece and your reminder inspires me to want to revisit it and record it soon. Stay tuned. 🙂
Sad music makes me.... happy😅😅. Love minor chords.. Make me.feel bittersweet.
Yes, it often feels cathartic listening to - and playing - sad music, especially music composed by the ingenious Chopin.
I would say his Nocturne in e minor (Op 72 #1) . I also agree with your selected Nocturne in c# minor. Generally Chopin's Nocturnes are deep and do have a profound feeling of real life...
Good choice and good description of his nocturnes!
And what about the prelude in e minor? or the waltz op 69 no 1 and 2?
Definitely sad ones.
I like to play pieces in minor keys
Me too! Do you have a favorite piece?
what about Prelude, Op. 28, No. 15 or Nocturne Op. 27, No. 2?
Both good choices.
Why are you dressed so casually?
My tuxedo was at the cleaners.
