I got that "Single Cut Leo Jaymz" LP as well a couple months back expecting to mod it and turn it into a project guitar (expecting for the price for it to be horrible and likely needing a full rework).
Like you, I was surprised at what came in. Neck work and fret work were lovely (no fret work needed, or real setup needed). Unit came in with wax potted AlnicoV pickups (which sound much better than I expected). The Grover-style tuners on mine don't lock, but they do hold tune just fine. The dime-sized pots were already 500k and had an acceptable cap, and felt nice and smooth (but I bought an orange drop for it, just haven't swapped it).
All I did so far is change the stings to some Ernie's and it's been great to play.
I won't say there won't be some real "lemon" Leo Jaymz guitars some may get, but I know mine was great, and it seems yours was pretty nice as well... Definitely worth the money (if not 2x the price it goes for).
    Simply Put: It will do.

Yes over all an exceptional guitar and when you don’t expect much and you get something this good it’s really mind blowing that the big brand names can’t give you a good guitar for less like these!

    I chose leo
The size of potentiometers have nothing to do with the values. Dime-sized come in every value available.that guitar has 500 K pots in it.

Yeah , but, dime sized.. eh. TBH , I'm not sure they sound worse but if any soldering needs done it's easier on a full sized pot.. I'm guessing and I'm not getting any younger so my eyes are not as good as they used to be.

The pots don't make sound or make things sound better or worse. The pickups make sound and the pots restrict the signal from reaching the amplifier thereby lowering the sound. On the small parts the lugs are a tiny bit closer together but not by much

I was told that locking tuners don't actually keep your guitar in tune. He said the only people who think that are people who never owned them. But there is a new bridge that does keep your guitar in tune called the Evertune. Who knew!!!

I have installed locking tuners on most of my guitars- I have over 16 guitars & adding more & modding more everyday - for the most part the guitars that use locking tuners - when left on the rack for a long time - hold tune still - sometimes after months - & the guitars that do not use locking tuners - need to be tuned - it’s perfect if you have gigs and use multiple guitars on stage - you want to swap out real quick- you know she’s still in tune - it’s factually a lot better with them that’s why guitars have them 🤷🏻‍♂️

Leo Jaymz will end up around $325 after your mods. Epi is till $600. I wouldn't call the Epiphone top tiger maple because it really does not pop even with that red finish. I wonder if you can get a small monitor speaker to go through the line out on your amp that sits at your head height (on top of the Marshall head, maybe) so you can hear it better.

The Leo Jaymz looks like it could've been built at the Epiphone factory. I like the paint job a lot, the dark red border works with the gray maple. I'd be happy with one just like it. Coming from a multi Epi LP and Special owner. I hear the Firefly LPs are also pretty nice btw. All the SE Asia guitars are pretty nice really, well-built and good value. A lot of brands are giving Epiphone a challenge.

I don't want to be a jerk but the truth of the matter I don't trust any Guitar channel... unless I inspect it myself & feel it out , I don't trust anyone... the only person in this world that cares about me & my money is ME... my opinion buying a guitar on line without seeing it first is just as dumb as buying a car on line with out first test driving it..
I've seen way too many youtuber guitar channels promote the heck out of this Leo as if it's the greatest thing in the world but don't tell us how much they getting paid to push the product..
I just don't trust a company that doesn't sell product in stores..
direct to customer in my opinion is a flawed way of doing things
    just my opinion..

I've had 3 quality Les Paul guitars, 1 is a 12 lb 20 year old beautiful Epiphone? Guess what plays and sounds like butter, it does have frets that barely see light, Absolutely one of the finest American made Epiphone I've had a pleasure to own and the best sound out of a tube amp, Definitely don't keep a EP LP out of your collection

The size of the pot has nothing to do with the what K it is, as in 500k, 250k, etc...
WD Music sells really nice high-end Dime Size CTS Brass Shaft pots. These are great when you have pots that are drilled too close to the sides of your electrical cavity preventing you from using the full (Quarter) sized pots.
Mojotone sells CTS 7% Tolerance TVT (True Vintage Taper) pots and the CTS push-pull pots. The Art of Tone sells complete wiring kits with CTS 5% & 10% Tolerance pots complete with Gavitt cloth push back wire and high quality Russian Military PIO (Paper in Oil) Capacitors. Use .022 Capacitor on the Bridge and a .015 on the Neck Pickup. You'll get Clapton's famous Women Tone when you roll the tone off on the Neck Pickup. Hope this helps You
    God Bless Y'all.

You didn't say that you would have wanted to change the pu's, pots and tuners on the epiphone. Seems to me, your cost to upgrade the Leo Jaymz LP, as you have planned, you'd be spending about as much as the cost of the epiphone. Am I wrong?

    • @beannie60
      @beannie60  8 місяців тому

Totally wrong! Let me break it down for you. Guitar-$179 + $52 neck pu, + $65 bridge pu, + $32 Gyker locking tuners + $6 knobs along with 4, 500K pots that I got for free + $50 labor/installation total = $384! So I'm still ahead of it! Thanks for your comment! Rock On!
