Akiba Tape - 'Fly Away':- +0.6% Pitch Corrected - Unidentified Japanese Song - 2022 Remaster
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 вер 2024
- Update: After comparing drum samples from a Yamaha RX11 to the original song upload, I believe that I discovered that the pitch of the recording was ever so slightly off by -0.6%. As the original source was cassette playback, this would make sense, as they often fluctuate marginally in playback speed.
Provided here is a remastered version of the captivating mysterious song from Japan. Tentatively known as 'Fly Away' or the 'Akiba Tape', this song has remained uncredited since its discovery back in 1990. Despite the source material for this mix being a relatively low quality mono recording, the end result came out surprisingly well.
By enhancing the original audio, the hope is that listeners might have a better chance of identifying the voice, instruments used and a closer focus on the composition of the song. With luck, this might inch us closer to identifying this elusive artist/s.

THATS VERY GOOD NEWS
As a listener of city pop since 2009, i can’t hear anything creepy with this song. I guess I am just used to catchy melodies with sad lyrics which is a staple in city pop.
The creepiness is the song has heavy overtones of suicide and the woman who sung this is completely unknown. Meaning she might of commit suicide
Its scary because of the melody itself too i believe, the tone of the music itself builds suspense and a sense of dread despite also sounding suspiciously catchy, it sounds like a fairly normal song but the fact its in a minor key and the suicidal tone of the lyrics make it appear creepy, specifically exaggerated through the fact its made by an unidentified artist from an unidentified tape
the song is creepy in that it has an upbeat sound but the chords are just ... kinda odd. (almost gothic ?) especially that weird bit at 1:35, its just so out of place in the most perfect way. just feels a bit creepy
It sounds like if you mixed the vibe you get watching the movie heathers, acid and a city pop song together. The instrumentals give me a feeling of nostalgia but also is just so strange it makes my body tense up and become more alert as if I’m being watched
@@worowelf maybe living in dread made the dreadful vibes go right over my head LMAO sounds amazing
the voice is very similar to that of Reiko Takamen, this idol only has one song that is on an album with several songs by different artists. "sunset road" is the name of the song
You must mean Reiko Takahashi.
Yes, she has been one of a few focus points of this investigation. She has proven to be very difficult to contact however. To have a response from her would be fantastic.
@@sps4992 Reiko Takahashi doesn't sound exactly like her, Reiko Takahashi's voice seems more deeper.
People also as well say her voice is related to Meiko Hakahara.
Both are difficult to contact. Maybe because of the date this song may have been recorded.
The singer, who is unknown, may not have a way for investigators to hear a response from the unknown singer.
This mystery might not be solved.
This may have been made when city-pop was a popular thing, I believe that time was about in the early
1970's. Means this person have been missing, referring to Meiko Hakahara. She may have died, to suicide.
Which means, this may have been her last tape before she went "missing".

1:35 this part is insanely good, wow! i hope the internet does find who made this badass song:)
Arika Takarano of Ali Project has long been a point of interest in this investigation. After recent A.I. analysis, as well as this vowel comparison between her and the mystery voice, it actually provides a lot of supporting evidence to this theory. I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
ua-cam.com/video/_KKUlV7WxEE/v-deo.html
@@sps4992The only way we could further debunk or prove the theory is to hear from Takarano herself but yet, we know contacting her would be extremely difficult.
The only thing we could do is wait patiently to see what comes up.
Its Actually a Cover not her song
As someone not familiar with a lot of Japanese artists this song creeps me out but fascinates me. My best suggestion is asking a Japanese radio to play it and ask them to ask if they can place the singer
Thank you for your feedback.
I have personally requested the song to various online 'radio' shows/podcasts, but as I'm not hearing these shows, I unfortunately can't confirm if it has achieved any air play.
I do agree that it's a good idea though 👍
It´s my first time listening to this version, and i feel that now, it sounds more similar to Yukiko Okada voice
Yukiko Okada has indeed been a popular opinion, but I personally don't hear the similarity between the voices. There's a certain maturity to the Akiba voice, which I've not heard from Okada before. That's not a criticism towards Okada at all, rather just an observation. I won't pretend to be a Yukiko Okada expert, but from what I believe, she has a distinctly younger sounding voice, with particular mannerisms that I don't hear in the Akiba voice.
It would indeed be a significant and exciting discovery to learn that it was her, but I personally don't believe that to be the case.
@@sps4992 I agree with your point on Yukiko Okada. It has been a popular opinion, also her sudden death has contributed to the hypothesis of an unreleased demo of her and even when myself hear a similarity between the voices, i do not believe that this song was from her since Okada voice sounds more youthful than the one on this demo. Okada carreer was very short to make possible a change on the character of her voice on an unreleased demo.
@@S3BaZxh Agreed. The voice in Fly Away is more akin to somebody like Akina Nakamori. A naturally deeper tone that Okada didn't possess. I can understand the romantic connection that people might want to make with this song and Okada, but I believe that only exists because of her unfortunately short life and the circumstances surrounding it.
@@sps4992 It could've been part of a demo from Okada Yukiko most likely before she died, and considering this was taken in the late 80s and 86 is considered late, it's unlikely, but it's possible. But I do too feel it's not her but the way the singer pronounces ra is a bit weird. Which makes me think this could be her. Besides, this was also around the time Okada was trying to experiment different song styles before her death.
@@MUZUKUN-YT Of course, I say this with absolutely no authority, but to the best that my ears can tell, the voice in this song is not Okada. Having heard many of her songs, it's safe to say that she has a fairly distinct voice, which includes certain rhythmic patterns and pronunciations, none of which I hear in Fly Away.
Again, I could be completely wrong, but I do feel quite strongly about that opinion. I would love to be wrong. It would be fantastic to learn of a new song from her, but I don't believe that will be the case.
This song is ABSOLUTELY fire. Shame that it is still not found...:(
Very true. Despite there being so much love for this song, it makes me sad that nobody yet knows who to direct it to. We can only hope that will change before too much longer.
Such a great song, shame the artist is still not known. I hope we do eventually find out and can direct praise where it’s deserved.
So true. It's far too good of a song to just be forgotten about.
Identifying and giving due credit to the responsible artist/s is the key mission here. I really hope that day comes where we can do that.
The voice sounds more natural like this as well, I'm pretty sure either the OP's cassette deck had some alignment problems, or the original recording was messy.
This also helps fill out the arrangement a bit. I would have expected this to be a demo based on the original recording, but you can very clearly hear a rather expensive string section around 1:23. This is more likely intended as a piece of publicity than a demo of a new artist, I think.
Unfortunately the voice does not sound familiar to me, it's very unusual among city pop artists, which unsurprisingly adds to its mystique...
Thank you very much for your compliments towards the new edit. The singer really does have such a wonderful voice, which is even more pleasing to listen to with the restored mix.
Regarding the original upload and the recorded playback speed, it is not uncommon for older or cheaper cassette decks to playback at irregular or inconsistent speeds. I am glad though that you appreciate the corrected pitch.
As for the "string section" that you mentioned, I have a feeling that might actually be guitar. If not, it could be a synth, but I'm reasonably confident that it's not acoustic strings. Regardless, the song sure is made well. Many big budget pop songs from that time period also utilised drum machines, therefore such use wouldn't necessarily be an indicator of budget. But again, I think it works well with the overall sound. Whether it's a well made demo or a recording intended for a commercial release, it's a great little song.
@@sps4992 I listened to singles on the Victor label from 1990, around the same period as Yumiko Takahashi's first single, and you can definitely hear the same drum machine, especially in Saki Takaoka's singles from that period such as 哀しみのヴェニス.
@@RabbitEarsCh Absolutely. Drum machines were huge in the 80s and 90s. You could argue that they're still a staple of many types of music today. Specifically though, that Yamaha RX11 has some rather distinct sounds. Hopefully, maybe, it could be a link to finding out some answers.

D-dayとかG-Schmittみたいな女性ボーカルの80年代のインディーズポストパンク系バンドにありそうな雰囲気。
Being a fan of Arika Takarano myself, I'm sure she's the singer. This maybe before her career as the vocalist of Ali Project. It's like she didn't have a chance to shine in 80's but she's still rocking with their Japanese GOTHIC avante garde genres up to this date. They've just released a new album.
Thank you very much for sharing your opinion.
There's no doubt that Arika's style has evolved into something quite different since the 80s, but there are examples of early songs where she sounds eerily similar to this mystery voice. Our team has worked hard to uncover and suggest many, many examples of singers with similar soundings voices. Arika is practically unanimously agreed to be the closest of all. We have tried to reach to her for confirmation, but she has unfortunately not responded.
Arika is my favorite singer. I recognize her voice inmediatly, is clearly her during the 80's

Thank you very much for your appreciation and enjoyment. It is such a great song. I do hope that we can some day identify the artist.
As an Ali project fan, this woman really does sound like Arika. I really hope that one day the truth about this tape will come out
Thank you for your feedback. Arika certainly is a very talented singer, with a wide range of styles and sounds. Modern Arika may not sound much like the singer from Fly Away, but there are absolutely examples of her earlier material that provide great reason to believe that she very well could be our mystery singer. We have attempted to reach out to her for confirmation, but we have sadly not yet had any response.
If I wanted to get into early Ali Project where should I start? I was very into jrock and gothic rock for most of my youth but somehow never got into them.
@voodoosleeper Ali Project are a complex group. I'm certainly no mega fan myself, but they have been through a couple of different phases. @@voodoosleeper I'm so happy that I could help :)
I have been listening City Pop for a long time, I really loved this song since I read about the mystery. For me and what my ears can notice is that the singer have to be around her 18s - 25s years old, the voice is deep and mature, but not at all you can still feell the innocence of some younger girl. I think that if we really want to compere voices of others idols/singers we have to search songs that need to be really similar in at least beat or the slowness but young "feeling" that the singer is trying to share with us, for an example of what I am trying to say is that we can't compere "Sunset Roat" of Yukiko Okada because the "feeling" is totally different. (Sorry, if my english ain't perfect, greetings from Peru!)
Thank you very much for your thoughts. I agree with everything that you said.
Regarding 'Sunset Road', I will assume that you meant Reiko Takahashi, not Yukiko Okada. Reiko Takahashi has indeed been a big point of focus throughout this search. Even more so than Sunset Road, I highly recommend that you take a listen to this song. It much more closely resembles the characteristics of Fly Away.

@@sps4992 Yes, I have heard that song of Reiko Takahasi and you are right, the voice are really similar between each other.

Total banger, I've been listening to it since October 2021
I must have heard this song over a hundred times now, and I'm still not sick of it.
This reminds me of a current problem my mom and I have and it has bothered us ever since. We were traveling to Texas and just outside of the metroplex of Dallas, we were trying to find stations that weren't static and had good connection. Well, suddenly we hear this very old Japanese love song. My mom could understand bits and pieces. It sounded as if it came from the 50s or 60s, and it unnerved me a little due to it sounding so eerie and creepy.
My mom has tried to search up various pieces she could understand, but due to them being so vague, it was futile and in vain. I remember just looking at her as it started to play. It sounded like it belonged in an anime movie set in the countryside. But the unnerving part about it was how the man sang. It was so eerie, and sounded like it was being played on a record player on this station. It also felt like it belonged in a horror flick of some type.
Dallas is known for its many Asian shops and has a very diverse population. So, if anyone out there has stumbled across a strange station playing old Japanese love songs that sounded like they were from the 50s or 60s while on the outskirts of the metroplex, let me know. Every time we seem to go there, the stations just get weirder and more unnerving.
Might wanna look up Ue o Muite Arukou or by it's most famous name, Sukiyaki. It kinda fits your description, man singing it, from the 60s, and is about love (well, kinda).
@@stereoshifter94 unfortunately it's not that song. The man singing sounded much older than him and it sounded more country/folk like than that.

I classified this as Japanese Post Punk.
Yeah, it's a funny one. It's not exactly pop, not completely rock, it's slightly gothic, but also with a bit of punk drive.
That's exactly what I was thinking. It has an almost pop like Bauhaus sound to it.
@jonathangamer7606 Along with other members of the investigation, we must have listened to hundreds, if not thousands of songs whilst trying to find links to this song. Between chart topping singles and underground indie bands, we've struggled to find anything else that we would really say matches the style of this song. It's proto and post, all at the same time, yet it doesn't really sound like anything else. It's as much fascinating as it is frustrating.
I made a chord sheet (tab) which I uploaded to Ultimate-Guitar if anyone's interested. Its titled "Fly Away - Akiba Tape Chords by Misc Originals"
Great work. I'll have to check it out. Thanks!

Your a legend
Those that think it’s Yukiko are reaching and trying to force a narrative on the “spookiness” just because of her tragic passing. One, the singer’s vibrato here is slow and drawn out, while Yukiko’s style is quick. If Yukiko did have a drawn out lyric, she tended not to vibrato until the very tail end of the note. It stayed that way all the way until Hana no Image. Two, look at it from the producing end as well. Sun Music rarely ventured into somber minor chords as the song’s base foundation. The pitch change was natural in accordance with the chords used in the rest of the song and transitioned back to the original pitch seamlessly, so I’d say a gifted amateur or established company/producer. But no, not Yukiko 100% so stop it and let her continue to rest peacefully. You have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about

This is a strong belief of mine. It would make a lot of sense. Any research that I have attempted myself has been fruitless though, unfortunately.
To me, it almost sounds like more of an insert song that plays during the episode, or something you hear on a radio in the background while the protagonist is doing something like studying or thinking back on something important.
I'd like to thank you for your hard work on this mysterious case. I have a question. Do you know what is the brand of the original cassette? I want to know if the marker hides the name of the brand or something else. EDIT : I don't know if you've looked at the singers under Victor entertainment. Regarding Yoko Nagayama, this song probably better demonstrates the range that we hear in Fly Away - ua-cam.com/video/L9_hFZtrFaM/v-deo.html
Yoko tends to add that curly/twisty up-stroke at the end of many phrases, which I don't believe I hear any of in Fly Away. I agree with you that tonally she's not far off, but I think the curl in her voice probably limits any chance of her being our mystery artist. It is a good suggestion though.

Whilst there are examples of this kind of songwriting, as you stated, it wasn't typical in pop music. If anything, it's arguably anti-pop. Though fan-favourite Yukiko Okada did start to introduce some of these elements into her later music, it certainly wasn't to the degree that this song demonstrates. I'm not at suggesting that she is involved with this song though at. If nothing else, I hope that this observation dissuades those who are set on that idea, as there are a surprising amount of those who are sure of this theory.
As you stated, any version that we currently have is believed to have stemmed from one only known upload. Better source material would be amazing, but at least what we do have is still very listenable.
@@sps4992 it pisses me off that people are coming to that conclusion. It’s incredibly disrespectful to those have passed when this singer and Yukiko’s styles sound NOTHING alike. Anyways, I hate people and their ignorance
@@JYC512 It is a very narrow belief to conclude that Okada is the singer of Fly Away. Though I do agree that it's a little tiring to hear her name brought up so often, I still think however that ANY conversation around this topic is a good thing. I have just accepted that it is a part of this investigation that will keep coming up.
Now don't get me wrong, I have actually been listening to Yukiko Okada a lot lately, possibly more than anything else these last few months. It definitely is an outlier, but after listening to and discovering SO much Japanese pop and rock throughout the last year alone, it isn't the only example. A common theory and potential link is a possible association with Ali Project. They have some music that is not entirely unlike Fly Away. They also would have first assembled around the same time that this song is theorised to have come been recorded. Additionally, there are some very convincing studies that suggest that the voice of Ali Project's singer, Arika Takarano, is near on identical to the voice heard in Fly Away.

For all those curious the songs called A Midsummer Night's Dream (Manatsu No Yo No Yume)
Thank you very much for the heads up. I'll be sure to check that out!
I agree, it sounds basically identical with that part
@@destiny2004 It's definitely the same melody. Interesting...

There are promising leads on this song.
・There is a theory that this song was supposed to be a song by Akina Nakamori.
This was mentioned in the comments section of one of the videos by someone who heard this song as a demo song by Akina Nakamori. This theory may be correct, as the lyrics of the song are very similar to those of Akina Nakamori's "赤い鳥逃げた" (Red Bird Escaped).
Update: One thing I forgot to tell you. This theory is convincing enough, since "Wagamama (Even if it's just a dream)" was released in 1984 and "Akai Tori Egashita (The Red Bird Ran Away)" in 1985. It is possible that this is a demo tape by the same company.
Thank you very much for suggesting this theory. Akina Nakamori's name has definitely been discussed by a number of people. Whilst I don't believe that it's Akina's voice that we hear in this song, there always is a possibility that it could have been a demo that was intended to be shown to Akina. I will look into the song that you mentioned.
Thank you 🙇♂️

I'm hoping this song gets found real soon. This year had been great for unidentified songs, such as Fond my mind, How long will it take, and Just a game; and I wish for this one to be included in the list of songs finally linked to an artist.
With each artist identified, more people could join in this search and make this a reality more easily.
When you corrected the pitch, it really sounded similar to Yuko-chan during her last album. But the prolonging of lyrics is very different. Was she experimenting?
Thank you for your feedback. I personally don't hear any similarity with Yukiko Okada, but a surprising amount of people have commented that they do. Hopefully we'll eventually discover the truth and know for sure.

A lot of people have commented how they like the way she lifts into the chorus here. The shift in key and mood. What is it exactly that you like about it?
@@sps4992 I think this part of the song really works with the story behind the tape. Plus it’s very good. Sometimes I just load up this video to listen to this park specifically. I also like how it contrasts with the rest of the song
@@GahmConrad I've personally never understood the so-called 'creepy' aspect of the story. To me, it's just a well crafted song that shifts between moods and pitch. If some people though like to believe that there could be something more to this song, something eerie or off about it, then that's cool too. If it gets more people listening to this song, then that will only help to get this song more attention, which will hopefully assist in its identification 👍

What about early Yoko Nagayama? Someone mentioned her name before. She switched styles later on, so it wouldn't be a stretch. Someone with more discerning ears than I may be able to chime in here.
Thank you for your feedback.
So many names have been brought up by now, I struggle to recall them all 😅
I will certainly look further into your recommendation of Yoko Nagayama.
Thank you
and if we give a spin to the search and instead of looking for the singer better we look for the composer since he has a very interesting lyrics and to my taste the original version of this recording is a demo that was not intended to come to light and one last thing this song is very good and I hope the day when the mystery is solved Un saludo desde Lima

I love this song

this song is Distancia (Cover) Berti Russell & Berti Rossell Gómez Hernández
Sadly that is not the case. Berti's version is merely a cover of this song.
This sounds like a Anime Ending to a space opera
This song is so good, i love this part 00:44
Despite how many times I've heard this song, it always feels fresh. It's not just a simple rock song. It's not pop either. It doesn't really seem to fit neatly into any particular category. It is though beautifully haunting in the way that it almost seems to tease you with so many little surprises.

I don't know if this name has been mentioned before, but I think it could be Iyo Matsumoto. Her voice sounds quite similar to me, and she was on the same record label as Sara Takahashi (singer of the other Akiba Tape song), not that that means anything.
Thank you for the suggestion. I will be sure to look into that. Thanks

It sounds like "Distancia 2" by Berti Russell
Unfortunately just looks like the guy sampled it
Some technical questions :) What file format was the original recording sent in? Was it MP3 or WAV? Does anyone have access to the cassette so you can rip it in good quality on a decent deck? I assume the original cassette is gone, since remasters of the older recording are being made. Finally, could I ask for the original audio file with this version? I would download this song, but converting from YT always introduces some lossy after re-converting. Thanks in advance!
The original rip from the cassette was to MiniDisc. That version was then uploaded online many years ago. Sadly, the original cassette, MD and file, are all lost to time.

@@djgraco3928 You're very welcome.
Why does this 'Distancia 2' thing own the copyright?
It's unfortunately a new hurdle that we're trying to overcome. This Bertie fella absolutely had nothing to do with the creation of the original song, so by that alone, he's probably committing fraud if he's making any money off of this. The one benefit that I'm hoping to come from this is that it might actually coax out the rightful owner/s of the sing
Sounds a little like Chisato Moritaka!!!
Thank you for your feedback.
I didn't recognise the name immediately, but my UA-cam search history confirms that I indeed have looked into her before.
I don't recall what the conclusion was, but I do agree that there are some similarities in her early sound and what we hear in this mysterious song. Perhaps it might be worth another look.
May I ask if you might have any knowledge about Chisato that might assist with this theory?
Thank you.
Actually this sounds like Junko Yagami's "Cheater".
There's a mini solo at 2:49, what kind of guitar and pedals do you think the author used?
It's really hard to say. The gain sound is rather harsh, like something from a vintage solid state amp. Whether this is from an amp or a pedal, again, it's too difficult to know exactly. This style of lead guitar tone wasn't all that uncommon at the time though.
As for what guitar? I'm leaning towards something with humbuckers, but it's nothing super obvious to my ears.
What are your thoughts?
@@sps4992 Well, an old amp sounds like an interesting theory, since it sounds a little bit crunchy as well...
@@rapcoremanx Being that the song is believed to be from the mid to late 80s, it's practically guaranteed that it is an older amp of some kind. Even older tube amps can have that buzzy tone though, so I really have no idea what this amp tone could be, unfortunately.

So I am just going to throw this out there, what about Monday Michiru? I know, it doesn't sound exactly like her, but she is Japanese, started her career in the late 80s, and was the artist for another unknown song, One Night Stand (real name Groovin' All Night).

the guitar solo reminds me a bit of yuji toriyama
This is quite nice actually
I totally wonder if the song was originally produced with only musical instruments as a separate tape, then they incremented it with the vocals of different singing nominees held within an audition. Since now a second tape has been found with a different singer involved, it could have either: been a lost tape that was supposed to be used in an intro or an outro of an anime OR was used in a romance tv show in japan. Judging by how dark the lyrics tend to be, I assume this supposed show (or movie) is meant to be heavily targeted towards the concepts and consequences of deep romance, in which this case could have either been any anime or a serious romance show. That's just my theory, I am certain that it could be wrong once the song is finally found.
AHHHH I now know why someone didn't claim this song or that this is their song. Is that because the artist probably dead or she committed suicided after she recorded this, and the way that she was missing after this is insanely creepy. I was listening to this while looking at my back and front to keep aware that some ghost might not be appear in front of me 😂😂😂 I was suddenly overthinking lol.
It's certainly not an impossibility that the singer of this song could be deceased, especially since it's been close to 40 years since it's believed to have been recorded.
@@sps4992 I was thinking that because if she's still alive, she must claim this song and represent some evidence that this is hers. As of now, no one still knows who is the singer so I might thinking that she was dead long years ago.

I couldn't say for certain, but the singer sounds a little bit like the singer in Ali Project. But others have mentioned that already.
Thank you for your feedback. This is a strong and not-unlikely possibility. Arika Takarano has been known for taking on various outside projects before Ali Project really took off as a band. It's possible that this song could even have been an early Ali Project song. I'm less inclined to believe that though, as I personally weigh more towards Arika singing vocals for a song intended for an anime or drama of some description. My current and strongest feeling is that this song was sung by Arika, for a production that is either very underground, or was never completed.
@@sps4992 So do I. There also seems to be a break in Ali Project album releases between 1988-1992. While the rest of their albums seems to be around two years apart.
Maybe she had some solo endeavors in this time.
@Naomi Baron This is an option that I personally am rather tied to. I was initially sceptical of Arika's involvement, but the more that we've learnt about her and her activities, it isn't unreasonable that she could have done something like this.

As solid as this sounds, I still get demo vibes from this. It just feels _too_ repetitive. I understand Plastic Love is a notoriously repetitive song, but this one in particular feels like a run-on sentence in song form
I won't argue that there are demo qualities to this song. That said, I would argue that it is more likely a professional level demo though. As for it being repetitive... Do you really think so? It seems rather efficient to me, never really dragging or repeating without cause.
