    We grow okra in containers every year. We freeze and can our okra for pickled okra with onions and peppers we grow. It is great with lima beans or any kind of pea like field peas or purple hull peas. We put it in stews, soups we love it here in Florida!

    I tried growing it in England. The seed germinated. Then we had three weeks of cold rain in June and it just sat there.
    Then I bought a little plastic greenhouse for it and it’s as happy as Larry!

    This is my second garden. First one I strooked out in the middle of the season then renal failure on top-sort of took me off the game. lol. Late start this year-had to build the raised beds from sheet metal which was given to me of I hauled it off-spent weeks with my angle grinder cutting it to fit my trailer. So, Okra went in July. Got my first harvest a couple of months ago-all woody, 8" long pods. Huh. First, I was waiting for them to hang down like tomatoes or such-not poke straight up in the top so I never saw them. Now I'm getting three or four a day-only have five plants. Next season starting early and keeping on top. :)

    Added this video to my favorites as a guide for next year. This year my okra was a little better than last year mainly because I did not plant the seeds an inch deep. Now I need to work on placement in the garden to make sure they dont get shaded out. Also squash bugs and ants love my okra. The ants attack the top of the plants before the flower develops and if I leave the pods too long they burrow holes into them. Its a forever battle having a garden but the experience makes it worth it. Brandi

    Those plants seem a little spindly, probably because they're growing in shade at least part of the day. The main pest I have had with okra is aphids, though the plants are normally robust enough to grow through an infestation. I have seen Japanese beetle damage as well, though normally those are more attracted to other plants in the garden.

    Cuz just wondering 3 stages, growth, budding, harvest, meaning is it the same as growing any fruit or get by plant, cause you mention using phosphorous in the beginning but I did see flowers slow that why you said use more phosphorus wen you plant the seed before hand, did you give the soil more nitrogen for growth, since the okra give flowers early, i'm growing some now and learning as I go along, but I grown marijuana since 1973 till now I'm 68 hawaiian, planting in the beginning for growth 30 10 10, then as soon as I see it begin to buds I change to a 10 30 10 for the buds, then a month be for I harvest I stop watering and fertilizing cause I'm going to harvest my 8 to 12 foot plants, I took notice that okra starts to flower real early, no wonder why you mentioned low nitro more phosphorus flower early, npk the main ingredient in growing any plants, like marijuana smile, mahalo cuz for the much needed info I really needed again mahalo and aloha from oahu hawaii pearl city pacific palisades 96782

    Very informative thank-you sir. I see you're growing Okra in a very beautiful forest glade. Is a bit of shade OK. Also it seems Okra is Ok with the occasional heavy flooding. How long did those roots sit under water? They still look pretty strong and healthy to me. I want to plant okra but I'm worried about our heavy rains. Is one month long enough to sow seed and harvest, maybe two months, what is the growing/harvesting time before the plants are finished producing and you need to plant again..... Paul McGhee Good morning to you friend. First you should have plenty of time to plant.You didn't mention the region you lived however you mentioned zone 9 on a national chart that would indicate the Texas region I believe. Regardless of your location you should have time to plant a variety of seeds and still be able to produce and harvest. This will depend on a couple of things. 1.What are you planting? 2 .What are you planting it in. You mentioned shade in my spots, I have certain plants that can be planted in a shady area.Tgungs like Potato,Cabbage and other items are planted before many leaves come into play. Well hope this helps and best of luck to you. Todd and Karen

      The Gardening Rebel Hi friend I'm in San Antonio. Traditionally Zone 8B temperatures over the last few years zone 9 statistics tend to work well, at least for heat-loving plants. My question was concentrated on your okra topic. I've watched a lot of videos and how to use for okra and know they love the Heat and no they tolerate a ton of sun but have not seen a lot of information regarding pushing the boundaries into shade and how far that can go. My full sun spots are precious as I have a lot of mature oak trees on my property keeping us cool. Typically whenever I plant a crop that is new to me I will try several plants, one in full sun is recommended one in full afternoon sun with Evening Shade and one in full Morning Sun and full afternoon shade to test the light boundaries so to speak. Our native soil here is full of loads of clay and little Loom. Fortunately over the last couple of years I have been bringing in a lot of organic material, last summer I brought in 12 yards of wood chips about 6 to 12 in deep across half the garden and in this year I brought in 5 yards of fine wood chips already halfway composted that is a foot deep in full sun for 7 hours. I'm pretty sure I pulled some of those wood chips back the Oprah would do outstanding in either of those spots. I've been having to add a bag of soil here and there for my plants as 15 or so tomatoes, mostly indeterminate cherries with a handful of larger in determinants. I've got some greens under 50% shade cloth with about 40 kale coming up from seed getting ready for the fall planting. I'll transplant those in September ish. Little herb garden when I had to cut them back right before an unusual snowfall. They were waist-high. Had an irate back to my question I'm hoping it's not too late to get some Clemson spineless okra and the ground. I've got plenty of room for a decent-sized row for my young family of four. Tips on watering are welcome, it can easily be assumed that they will get no more than one inch of rain per month from now until September if that. As I mentioned before lots of shade and precious sunspace. How far can I push the okra into the partial shade by density or by hours and still be productive? Sorry I know that was a mouthful. By the way I'm also growing tropical and subtropical greens as annuals, similar to the way sweet potato vine Rose I've got Malabar spinach Egyptian spinach, Moringa or drumstick tree, Chaya, that one came back on its own this year. And I am making my second attempt at a massive chayote squash native to Mexico. This thing gets massive and the Squash tastes a little bit like cucumber and it puts out a tremendous amount of foliage that I can use for my compost bin. I apologize in advance for any typos I'm using voice to text and am on Bluetooth on the road and I'm able to properly edit.

    How about at the end of the season. Will it grow again next season or should you remove the stalk at the end?

    • @resacarebel1868
      @resacarebel1868  4 роки тому

      The plant dies at the end of its growing season. Just pull the plant up and save one of the pods and let it dry out keeping the seeds inside. Just plant your harvested seeds next year and enjoy the bounty.

    Hi there. Thank you for a very informative video. I live in the Mid North of South Australia (a temperate zone) where we have extremely hot summers. For the majority of our Summer the temperature is 86 degrees F upwards. It is not uncommon to have a week to 10 days of temperatures consistently over 100 degrees F in February. During this period the night time temperature doesn't really drop much and stays around 86 to 90 degrees. I noticed that your crop seems to be planted among trees and is quite shaded. ( or it could be the time of day that you were taking the video ) Would you recommend planting Okra in full sun when we can reach the extreme temperatures mentioned? Would they thrive as long as the root zone was kept cool with mulch and obviously regularly watered? Regards, Maria.

      Thanks for your quick reply. I just noticed a comment on a different video from another Aussie who was loosing plants during last summer and thought it may have been because the UV rating were "off the charts" - in his words. His plants were about a foot tall - so he put shade cloth over them and they seemed to recover. I have just asked him for more info regarding the end result.

      I’m in south Texas and we’re at 100F every day nowadays. My plants are about a foot high and I don’t keep them in the sun, I keep them under my porch in the shade. I know people say they love the sun and need hours of sunlight a day, but mine get sun once in a while, like an hour or two every other day, and that seems to be enough. They’re getting big with strong stalks and green leaves. If I leave them out too long, they’ll start to wilt. I think sometimes this sun is just too hot, it’s like fire to the plants. Climate change is a real thing. This sun isn’t like the sun I grew up with where we could be outside all summer long.

    • @resacarebel1868
      @resacarebel1868  5 років тому

      Several issues can cause this however let's look at the top two. 1 Did you apply any fertilizer? For okra plants I would go with a 10 20 10 that would cover the nutrient issue. 2 how much sunlight does the planted spot receive? The ideal time for okra in my opinion is 6 to 8 hours. So without knowing your area or your gardens nutrients those 2 items top my list of issues to look into. Todd and Karen.
