Not enough guitar for my taste compared to the original, but I'm an MGMT fan all the way, and this was a pretty decent cover. Probably would have been trippier if they made a studio version.
Somehow this escaped me til now. I love that they did this total jam, and even did it with the bubbles (that originally ruined all the velvet seats in the queens royal albert hall & got the floyd banned for life there lol whoopsie) and Barrett’s big plastic duck on stage. Even got the tape op effects just right! Someone is a die-hard Barrett fan. Love it.
YES!!! One of the reasons I got turned onto MGMT so quickly was from hearing the echoes of early Sid Barrett era Pink Floyd. To hear them to cover a song like that is perfect. They really nailed it, capturing the spirit of the song while taking it to a new place.
Exactly. I think there are some songs you don't want to stray too far from the original and others that lend itself to ideas. Syd era Floyd is for the most part prime pickins to put a modern spin because they were so far ahead of their time in 67.
Great cover..I can't even imagine a cover of this song so good.❤Thank you Syd Barrett for giving such a great experimental/psychedelic music. Rest in peace 🕊️❤️🙏 Legend...
I'm not a big fan of MGMT but omg after listening to this I love them mooore. Lucifer Sam is from the "barrett period" of Pink Floyd and its not a really known music. And they covered it soooo good
I love mgmt and Pink Floyd bro, and the fact that mgmt covered anything from Piper so perfectly just goes to show how good they are. I hope you’re a big fan these 4 years later because wow they’re better than ever after their 2018 album.
@@dang2443 it’s definitely not extremely known. It’s just known, but your average person who has heard of pink Floyd and even likes a couple of the big albums will probably be unaware of Piper.
This has to be, without a doubt, the best cover of a song EVER! In fact, if this was played, and no one told me it was a cover, i would naturally assume it was pink floyd
That was awesome. I can see where MGMT would garner a "modern day Pink Floyd" type of tag. That's no disrespect, they are their own thing, but I could see the comparison.
OK that was fkn awesome! The best modern cover of Syd era Floyd I've seen. Prove me wrong. I don't mean that in a cocky way. I'm saying if you got something better than this I would absolutely love to see it because this shits my jam.
MGMT is unreal, I like my floyd as much as the next guy. (though not so much after 1975) But Oracular spectacular was one of the best albums of the last twenty years and this is a damn good cover.
+Tony Montana David Gilmour was a much, much better musician, and Roger Waters' lyrics were far superior. Syd was good, but Gilmour was the true genius in the band. Syd never wrote anything even close to being as good as "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
Man Gilmour didn't write Shine On. He played the solo on it. And he was 29 at that point. It was a collaborative effort of the band. Was Gilmour being better than Syd? As far as songwriting goes, it's difficult to give him the nod over Syd. Of course he's by far the better guitarist. But Syd was no slouch. And the guy had stopped making music by the time he was 23. And the last time he was really himself was at 21, at which point he was miles ahead of all the others. It's not a stretch to say he would have gone on to do great things.
@chippchip1 Syd wanted "Fred" as he called Gilmour in the band before Piper, I've seen the letters?? And to say Waters could write better is EXTREMELY laughable. Maybe for the masses, but Syd was pure poetry, he made paintings into songs.. Read up. I've thrown out facts. Syd wrote MANY songs so much better than calling yer so called mate "Crazy" I bet RKB LOVED that they deemed him a "Crazy" diamond. He was a person.. Waters wanted to be a god.
i think it's good... of course it isn't the same as Pink Floyd but it's good! anyway i think that a band makes covers to show the admiration and respect they have to the band music!! in this case is obvious MGMT have Pink Floyd influence and that's why they made this cover! that's what i think of course! :) (sorry for my bad english!)
Come on pink floyd lovers, I like both bands matter of fact I liked pink floyd first. I just find it amazing that fans of such an experimental band can be so closed minded! Mgmt fans are being more open minded then you! that is amazing. But like I said i like both bands, Pink Floyd is great mgmt is great and this song is great and so is the original.
Obviously everyone who disagrees with you is wrong. FYI, there was an amazing emotional connection the first time I listened - like really listened - to both Pink Floyd and MGMT. To this day, Dark Side of the Moon still fills me with that same emotion. I've analyzed it through and through, like you would a piece of literature. That's almost what it is, no? But MGMT's "Kids" still fills me with the same nostalgia and melancholy as it did from first listen. They're both awesome.
Lucifer Sam is the Barrett song that should have been in the top 40, but never even hit the airwaves. It's the single most popish song on Piper, and a really good tune for radio play at the time. I never understood why it didn't make it there. The title, maybe? I dunno.
i no, the first tyme i dropped acid was the first tyme in my life i actually appreciated jazz from like the 40's and 50's. it fuckin blew my mind. and then the next part of my tripp was listening to the whole piper at the gates of dawn. that was an experience of a lifetime.
I just love that they picked THIS song.
@dad 69 420 ಠ_ಠ ϟ Or Interstellar Overdrive
Ikr?? Lucifer Sam doesn’t get enough love
You don't pick a Syd Barrett song. It picks you!!!
They should have picked the Gnome. A man named gimple crumble
@@boomtangle01best Syd song imo
I give them a ton of credit for covering this psychedelic gem with the trippy surf guitar riffs.
Not enough guitar for my taste compared to the original, but I'm an MGMT fan all the way, and this was a pretty decent cover. Probably would have been trippier if they made a studio version.
MGMT best act today, they make albums, not hooks
They are clearly fishermen you imbecile
@@psychedelicpiper999 completely agree needs more guitar!
Am I the only Syd Barret fan who thinks this is a solid cover?
It's a brilliant cover.
It's perfect
Definitely, pretty rare let alone a solid cover from one of the best psychedelic albums to ever be made
It's a fantastic cover. They stayed true to the music/lyrics and the added pageantry makes it even better.
Yes. About as solid as Bill Cosby's Jell-O pudding.
How the hell have I never seen this before?? MGMT is my favorite band and "Lucifer Sam" is my favorite Pink Floyd song... I never knew they covered it
MGMT is the best band in the world, congratulations is a masterpiece. self titled is amongst the best physc albums of all time
same here, and i am a year later
Brandon Breitkreuz it’s a good band, not the best in the world tho. but i completely respect your opinion!!!

MGMT = really good band. Lucifer Sam = brilliant Sydsong.
the perfect junction
It's the song that deserves the praise.
One of the coolest guitar riffs EVER. MGMT really did this song justice, and they added to its coolness with the stage effects and costumes!
Fr bubbles need to be in more live concerts
That was F-CKING AWESOME! (57-year-old Floyd fan.)
YES!!! One of the reasons I got turned onto MGMT so quickly was from hearing the echoes of early Sid Barrett era Pink Floyd. To hear them to cover a song like that is perfect. They really nailed it, capturing the spirit of the song while taking it to a new place.
This is what any cover should try to approach to always.
Yeeepppp!
Exactly. I think there are some songs you don't want to stray too far from the original and others that lend itself to ideas. Syd era Floyd is for the most part prime pickins to put a modern spin because they were so far ahead of their time in 67.
taking it to a new place? Not really sure what youre talking about. They didnt do anything much differently, just added some synth effects
ok this is the sign to start listening to MGMT, i fucking love Piper
As a precious Syd obsessive, that ain't a bad cover. Had I been in the audience I'd have yelled 'Fucking yessss!' at the end. Nice one.
Great cover..I can't even imagine a cover of this song so good.❤Thank you Syd Barrett for giving such a great experimental/psychedelic music. Rest in peace 🕊️❤️🙏 Legend...
Totally agree. MGMT is one of a very few bands that can pull off a Syd-era pink floyd song and make it sound all their own.
I love MGMT for this. Being a diehard early pink floyd fan, it's so nice to hear them today. It's so fresh.
This is one of the coolest ideas for a performance I have ever seen. The outfit and the bubble really match the tone of the song.
+Durin's Bane Done in 1967 at Games for May in London.
Very impressed. I love MGMT, but didn't know I could love them more. That whole Piper album is right up their alley.
