- Late Night with Jimmy Fallon - Pink Floyd Week
I couldn't find any good quality clips on youtube of this performance, so I thought I'd upload it.
"The Brooklyn psychedelic rock duo played "Lucifer Sam" last night (September 29) as a tribute to Pink Floyd's original songwriter Syd Barrett. The 1967 track, off The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, had the boys of MGMT sporting an oceanic theme, complete with fisherman attire, rope, a bubble machine and a (hopefully) fake lobster. Also, Deerhunter's Bradford Cox was there dressed as, um, Joey Ramone."

I give them a ton of credit for covering this psychedelic gem with the trippy surf guitar riffs.
Not enough guitar for my taste compared to the original, but I'm an MGMT fan all the way, and this was a pretty decent cover. Probably would have been trippier if they made a studio version.
MGMT best act today, they make albums, not hooks
They are clearly fishermen you imbecile
@@psychedelicpiper999 completely agree needs more guitar!
Am I the only Syd Barret fan who thinks this is a solid cover?
It's a brilliant cover.
It's perfect
Definitely, pretty rare let alone a solid cover from one of the best psychedelic albums to ever be made
It's a fantastic cover. They stayed true to the music/lyrics and the added pageantry makes it even better.
Yes. About as solid as Bill Cosby's Jell-O pudding.
I just love that they picked THIS song.
@dad 69 420 ಠ_ಠ ϟ Or Interstellar Overdrive
Ikr?? Lucifer Sam doesn’t get enough love
You don't pick a Syd Barrett song. It picks you!!!
They should have picked the Gnome. A man named gimple crumble
@@boomtangle01best Syd song imo
MGMT = really good band. Lucifer Sam = brilliant Sydsong.
the perfect junction
One of the coolest guitar riffs EVER. MGMT really did this song justice, and they added to its coolness with the stage effects and costumes!
Fr bubbles need to be in more live concerts
YES!!! One of the reasons I got turned onto MGMT so quickly was from hearing the echoes of early Sid Barrett era Pink Floyd. To hear them to cover a song like that is perfect. They really nailed it, capturing the spirit of the song while taking it to a new place.
This is what any cover should try to approach to always.
Yeeepppp!
Exactly. I think there are some songs you don't want to stray too far from the original and others that lend itself to ideas. Syd era Floyd is for the most part prime pickins to put a modern spin because they were so far ahead of their time in 67.
taking it to a new place? Not really sure what youre talking about. They didnt do anything much differently, just added some synth effects
Great cover..I can't even imagine a cover of this song so good.❤Thank you Syd Barrett for giving such a great experimental/psychedelic music. Rest in peace 🕊️❤️🙏 Legend...
As a precious Syd obsessive, that ain't a bad cover. Had I been in the audience I'd have yelled 'Fucking yessss!' at the end. Nice one.
Very impressed. I love MGMT, but didn't know I could love them more. That whole Piper album is right up their alley.
I love MGMT for this. Being a diehard early pink floyd fan, it's so nice to hear them today. It's so fresh.
That was awesome. I can see where MGMT would garner a "modern day Pink Floyd" type of tag. That's no disrespect, they are their own thing, but I could see the comparison.
Totally agree. MGMT is one of a very few bands that can pull off a Syd-era pink floyd song and make it sound all their own.
Nicely done! That fucking groove is timeless!
YES!! COVERING SYD!
Great cover. Awesome that this song got national air play!!!!
some people sure are threatened by covers
typical fanboy response....
I love MGMT
well done! great job reenacting the 1967 games for may concert too!!!
I love both bands so much
That's a good cover. Noone can match Syd but if anyone can pay a good tribute to his vibe it's these guys.
Just a wonderful piece. I love this music and didn't know this band but they are absolutelly fantastic. Good job guys....
This is fantastic!
Syd is alive and in GREAT spirits !!!!!!
lol Andrew biting the duck at the end
MGMT.AWESOME NO MATTER WHAT!
Holy shit this is great, good job MGMT!!
I would give a Grammy to this over anything Beyoncé ever did
wow wow wow this is amazing
This is a great cover! Good work MGMT.
i no, the first tyme i dropped acid was the first tyme in my life i actually appreciated jazz from like the 40's and 50's. it fuckin blew my mind. and then the next part of my tripp was listening to the whole piper at the gates of dawn. that was an experience of a lifetime.
love the song and the band
Cool
I love you ❤️
he never said he IS syd. Andrew just resembles him
Bradford Cox on the tapes
His voice isn’t meant to cover Syd but the instrumentals are pretty good.
The new MGMT album better be the best thing on the planet. That will show them.
thats bradford cox on the tape machine !
Fucking badass holy guacomle
Great cover of a great song!
To be precise this is a song by Syd Barrett when he was a member of Pink Floyd!
However MGMT have made it a great cover.
Caaaaan't explain
the life aquatic with steve zissou /ft. MGMT/
Big ups to MGMT
OMFG
Lucifer Sam, Siam cat
Always sitting by your side
Always by your side
That cat's something I can't explain
Ginger, Ginger you're a witch
You're the left side
He's the right side
Oh, no
That cat's something I can't explain
Lucifer go to sea
Be a hip cat, be a ship's cat
Somewhere, anywhere
That cat's something I can't explain
At night prowling sifting sand
Hiding around on the ground
He'll be found when you're around
That cat's something I can't explain
I’d maybe do “In the Beechwood” and try to give the vocals a melodic structure. My band has jammed the instrumental as soon as they put it in the “early days” comp
Son Volt does a great live version of this.
Syd watching James Bond and filtering it through a psychedelic perception.
WELL DONE BOYS
no nobody is being syd.. syd is one and only
Syd would be proud
Lucifer Sam....Siam car
Always sitting by your side always sitting by you side.
Back when floyd was good.
Love & Rockets did the definitive version
Live??
@@Oh_I_Will I don't know if they ever played it live, can't find any performances on UA-cam. i just think their studio recording of it is so excellent
good cover. congratz
They covered a great Floyd song, and Sonic Boom produced one of their albums i like em
He meant Andrew and not Lucifer Sam, if you read again.
That was my exact point.... What are you saying "no" about?
Atleast I have one.
YA BLEWIT! KAPIECH? ? ?
that creeping looking guy is bradford cox with a wig
lmao exactly.
Dont know who the fuck this band is but they know their Pink Floyd and thats pretty cool i guess
how old are you like 15?
i was always told myself mgmt is like the new pink floyd and somewhat beatles then i heard tame impala
it was a pretty good cover, but they didn't really change anything. it was just a less good version of the original. but props for picking an early floyd song
MGMT killed this song...
i thought it was left side then right side
Okay so if you’re the band that decided to play all movements of “Echoes” expect to be switched off at the funky part because it would be a commercial break. Plus shame on the band that played a long album closer to get airtime
What if he was like "Bitch I was freestyling" :3
This is nice, but can't touch Syd's version. A little too smooth maybe?
The only bad thing about this is Jimmy Fallon
for many years i thought the line was " Lucifer Sam, the, fire cat" (mentally picturing Barrett's cat sitting in front of his trippy fireplace) it was only until sites like 'genius lyrics' evolved that i discovered it is actually "...siam cat, i was kinda disappointed cos i thought the 'fire cat' thing was betterer what with Lucifer and all---just sayin', don't judge me haha
Siamese cat ! Woo !
How the hell have I never seen this before?? MGMT is my favorite band and "Lucifer Sam" is my favorite Pink Floyd song... I never knew they covered it
MGMT is the best band in the world, congratulations is a masterpiece. self titled is amongst the best physc albums of all time
same here, and i am a year later
Brandon Breitkreuz it’s a good band, not the best in the world tho. but i completely respect your opinion!!!
@@brandonbreitkreuz8137 ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh MGMT
@@brandonbreitkreuz8137 *The Beatles
Somehow this escaped me til now. I love that they did this total jam, and even did it with the bubbles (that originally ruined all the velvet seats in the queens royal albert hall & got the floyd banned for life there lol whoopsie) and Barrett’s big plastic duck on stage. Even got the tape op effects just right! Someone is a die-hard Barrett fan. Love it.
That was F-CKING AWESOME! (57-year-old Floyd fan.)
This is one of the coolest ideas for a performance I have ever seen. The outfit and the bubble really match the tone of the song.
+Durin's Bane Done in 1967 at Games for May in London.
that's because he isn't Syd. Obviously. He's COVERING his song, not trying to be him.
I'm not a big fan of MGMT but omg after listening to this I love them mooore. Lucifer Sam is from the "barrett period" of Pink Floyd and its not a really known music. And they covered it soooo good
MGMT is unreal man congratulations is a bit of a master piece
Brandon Breitkreuz congratulations is a masterpiece bro
I love mgmt and Pink Floyd bro, and the fact that mgmt covered anything from Piper so perfectly just goes to show how good they are. I hope you’re a big fan these 4 years later because wow they’re better than ever after their 2018 album.
It's extremely "known"
@@dang2443 it’s definitely not extremely known. It’s just known, but your average person who has heard of pink Floyd and even likes a couple of the big albums will probably be unaware of Piper.
OK that was fkn awesome! The best modern cover of Syd era Floyd I've seen. Prove me wrong. I don't mean that in a cocky way. I'm saying if you got something better than this I would absolutely love to see it because this shits my jam.
if you have shit in your jam then that's some shitty jam
Syd songs are tough. The real song gets its mad dash from messing with the rhythm and obviously tons of distortions. The rhythm has freeze frames like skateboarder hanging in the sky. After "can't explain." And every measure the beat stops and has to be jump started.. Here they are playing a 4-4 rock tune but that isn't quite what it is.
777jones pink Floyd couldn't even play it live how could you expect them? If they werw in the studio they'd nail every aspect.
Come on pink floyd lovers, I like both bands matter of fact I liked pink floyd first. I just find it amazing that fans of such an experimental band can be so closed minded! Mgmt fans are being more open minded then you! that is amazing. But like I said i like both bands, Pink Floyd is great mgmt is great and this song is great and so is the original.
Really good cover by a great band
one of the amazing pink f song, and it comes from syd
+Tony Montana David Gilmour was a much, much better musician, and Roger Waters' lyrics were far superior. Syd was good, but Gilmour was the true genius in the band. Syd never wrote anything even close to being as good as "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"
Man Gilmour didn't write Shine On. He played the solo on it. And he was 29 at that point. It was a collaborative effort of the band. Was Gilmour being better than Syd? As far as songwriting goes, it's difficult to give him the nod over Syd. Of course he's by far the better guitarist. But Syd was no slouch. And the guy had stopped making music by the time he was 23. And the last time he was really himself was at 21, at which point he was miles ahead of all the others. It's not a stretch to say he would have gone on to do great things.
He wanted to stop, and make art.. poetry. He felt very betrayed and.. rightfully so?
@chippchip1 Syd wanted "Fred" as he called Gilmour in the band before Piper, I've seen the letters?? And to say Waters could write better is EXTREMELY laughable. Maybe for the masses, but Syd was pure poetry, he made paintings into songs.. Read up. I've thrown out facts. Syd wrote MANY songs so much better than calling yer so called mate "Crazy" I bet RKB LOVED that they deemed him a "Crazy" diamond. He was a person.. Waters wanted to be a god.
he didnt wanted... he couldnt go on with his 'struggle'
i think it's good... of course it isn't the same as Pink Floyd but it's good!
anyway i think that a band makes covers to show the admiration and respect they have to the band music!! in this case is obvious MGMT have Pink Floyd influence and that's why they made this cover! that's what i think of course! :)
(sorry for my bad english!)
ok this is the sign to start listening to MGMT, i fucking love Piper
MGMT is unreal, I like my floyd as much as the next guy. (though not so much after 1975) But Oracular spectacular was one of the best albums of the last twenty years and this is a damn good cover.
syd barret playing magnetic tapes
This is awesome, MGMT stayed true to The Floyd and kept it authentic.
But l so much prefer Syd voice
Me too
This is still a RIDICULOUSLY GOOD cover.
bruh, he kinda sounds just like Syd in this. Couldn't honestly stand the guy or his voice, but this cover is purely genius.
@@starkindustries4603 it was a good cover but its just weird hearing american accent over a british song
This has to be, without a doubt, the best cover of a song EVER! In fact, if this was played, and no one told me it was a cover, i would naturally assume it was pink floyd
MGMT is like Pink Floyd in many ways, Andrew being Syd. :D
wow.. STP really nicked this for Sex Type Thing..
Pink Floyd / Syd Barret fans will respect this cover. Well done #mgmt 👏

Four Ever And Ever
It’s crazy to hear him talk about them performing the 11/11/11 album before anyone knew what it was
The Love & Rockets cover version of Lucifer Sam, shits all over this attempt.
My favorite band covering my favorite Pink Floyd song. Unreal.
part of the reminds me of james bond music
