  • Recently moved to a new office near Little India. This is one of the routes that I've been taking to work. Total time from Tampines to Little India took 1 hour.

    I noticed a lot of people walk or park on the left lane within Geylang (right? cos mostly shophouses). Even the bus does not use the bus lane ;) Also, too many cyclists without safety helmets.

    0:41 that hill is tiring but the downslope after that is very rewarding(I always do 60kph)

    Thank you for these videos. I want to ride to work (Yio Chu Kang/Seletar area, to Mountbatten) because it can almost cut my commuting time by half. The fastest thing to do would be to go through Serangoon, Paya Lebar, Geylang, but I would prefer being on the park connectors as they will be safer. Unfortunately I don't think the PCNs don't go as directly as I would like them to. Do you think it's okay for me to keep on the pavements on the main roads that I mentioned above, or will pedestrians slow me down too often? (I would start travelling at 9am)

      Hi Faye, the pavement along Geylang Rd can get very narrow, you would probably get slowed down a lot if you tried to go on the pavement. Suggest you take a look around on google street view first, and if you are not put off give it a try on a weekend when you have time to explore without worrying about being late. Hope you manage to find a convenient route - cycling is fun!

    Are there any roads, such as expressways, where cycling is prohibited

    I noticed that you seem to ride continuously on the left, even if there is a side road to your left and you intend to go straight.
    how would you prevent car drivers from not noticing you and turning into the side road on the left then? do you then hog the lane?

    • @sgcyclist4772
      @sgcyclist4772  8 років тому +2

      Yes I keep to the left when I'm in a lane that is a "left turn or go straight lane" like you would if you were driving a car. Sometimes I hog the lane at junctions especially if there's been a red light stop, but you have to be careful in this situation as there may be cars behind that want to go straight. Another thing you can do is to point straight to signal to drivers that you are going straight and not turning left.
      If the left most lane is a "left turn only lane" then I filter right to the "go straight only lane". Hope this makes sense.

    1:50 I would suggest you keep a fair distance when driving past parked cars. You never know when an idiot inside the car would open the right side door without checking - the collision could cost you heavily. If I had to ride past a stationary vehicle at close proximity I would go slow.
    2:10 I do not approve of overtaking on the left - even if the other cyclist is signaling to the right (a ppor attempt to signal at that - hold out the arm parallel to the ground). Proper overtaking should be done from the right side on Singapore roads where slow vehicles are to keep left.
    4:38 Try to keep off the chevron markings (traffic regulations) - the lane was free for you to ride on, wasn't it?

      What's the reason to not overtake on the left?

    • @SupidSeep
      @SupidSeep 4 роки тому +1

      @@rushbcykablyat1792 Safety, foremost.
      The other cyclist might have signaled right, but it's not a guarantee he won't make the left turn - if he did it would have caused a collision with the POV cyclist trying to overtake on the left. Better not to be in that situation in the first case.
      Squeezing in on the left gave only a narrow path between the other cyclist and the road edge. By contrast using the next lane on the right will yield a lot of room to overtake with a safe distance between the cyclists. This will factor in when dealing with the unexpected such as road defects or if the other cyclist swerved erratically or had a malfunction and crashed.
      Yet I encountered other cyclists and motorcyclist trying to squeeze between the half-meter between my bike and the road edge, or even against heavy vehicles. I saw enough road accident videos to know the dangers, and I have others depending on me staying alive.

      @@SupidSeep So let's say ah neh signals right and wants you to overtake left...what should I do in such a situation ah?
      Don't overtake?

      @@SupidSeep I'm a cyclist currently learning all I can about road usage and watching lots of videos, before I dare to use the road lol.

      @@rushbcykablyat1792 Generally i find most motorists would respect me if I obey traffic laws and avoid getting into the way of motor vehicles.
      Lane splitting is common among motorcyclists and cyclists in Singapore, but I avoid doing so, especially when close to heavy vehicles. Still remember a video where the POV motorist showed a Malaysian biker squeezing between 2 heavy vehicles, then the vehicles got closer together, you saw one vehicle jerk and the bike came out in a pile underneath.
      You may gamble with your life many times and win, but if you die quickly to a mistake it would be a mercy compared to suffering a slow agonising death or living the rest of your life as a cripple.
      I keep reminding myself of what would happen to my family if I die or get maimed in an accident.
