Ram Pump Delivery Pipe Closed at the Top

The Ram Pump delivery pipe can be closed at the top of the delivery while the pump is running. This will cause the pump to cycle without an output and the pressure tank will build full pressure allowed by the input head pressure. If there is not enough lift out to maintain back pressure the pump will stop when the delivery pipe is opened at the top after pressure has been built up in the line.

The difference is because when the 'static' pressure is changed to 'dynamic' pressure it is enough to cause an imbalance in the system as you stated. However, the 'static' pressure will always be the same at the top of the delivery pipe and at the pressure chamber when the upper delivery valve is closed. It is a closed system at that point and pressures are equal throughout. Problems can be avoided by using a relief valve or a bleed off orifice at the top of the delivery pipe to avoid a static pressure situation. You can verify this by comparing two pressure gauges at each end of the delivery pipe and closing it off.

you already try the waste valve is smaller i mean the you install the pump pipe is 1 1/2 and the waste valve reduce in 1inch diameter, thanks

I ran a test on that a while back. It does not increase the output.

The function of the pressure tank is to buffer vibration and store pressure through compressed air. Adding more pressure tanks can only make your ram pump vibrate less when running. But it will not increase the head or water output~

Without a pressure tank, the pump has to push all the water in the delivery pipe uphill all at once and that is a lot of rest inertia to fight. The air space in the tank compresses allowing more water to rush into the tank and then slowly push the water uphill. Two tanks or a larger single tank can allow more air space to be compressed and more water enters the tank, but only up to a point.

You can stop the pump from the top of the delivery as long as you have enough lift. In this example I had the delivery pipe right at the lowest possible point to demonstrate the loss of pressure.

@LandtoHouse I will have about 65 ft of lift from creek up a bluff. I was worried it would be too much lift

@@davebaldwin7218 The water outlet shutoff does not affect the operation of the rampump. If you are worried about too much pressure, you can install a safety relief valve on the rampump like I did. When the water outlet shutoff pressure exceeds the set value, the safety valve will open to discharge the high pressure.
