Hey guys, this is a 1999 Honda 400EX that I bought for 500 bucks. It was torn down and left in a barn for decades. The history is unknown, it was bought in an estate sale along with multiple other machines. I put a ton of time into this design, build and production but it was definitely worth it! Can I have that swing arm after you get the new one 🤞
@@6ohslow0 lol sorry man, it's going with the quad to whoever wins it 🤘
Do a 300ex next!!!
I loved watching this video... What do you prefer a 400ex or a 660 raptor?
@@kalegillis5161 thanks for watching! That's a tough one; the 660 was one of my favorite quads of all time when I was younger. I think I'd go with a well built 400ex because they handle much better and they're nimble, but raptors have so much torque they're so much fun; it's a toss up depending on the mood I'd say.
Who needs Netflix when sabo gives you a hour of awesome content 🔥
Thank you bro 🤘
Exactly
I know right . It's like an actual TV show.
Totally agree bro!
Literally haven’t watched Netflix in a whole week and a half bcz of these videos 🤣😂

Looks epic good work.
@@SALTERS9577 thank you man!
Graphics looks perfect
looks good man i love it i have a 2003 400ex sitting behind my shed with all the parts to fix it but i been slacking since i picked up a 2021 yfz450r so i guess you gave me some motivation to fix my 400ex keep up the content from one bucks co guy to another =)
Mike you need to keep this !!!
Really like the fact that you started to put the intros back in the videos. I know it's a lot more work bro... but man are they hilarious!!!
Haha, glad you like them man 🤘
I just say… „my strange addiction“! 🤣 Man, that was great! Maybe you should re-publish that one!?
Also the quad came out bad ass bro...4 real!!!
There is nothing better that I enjoy then to watching an old one brought back to life. You make it look easy, but I know it isn’t. Great video with a lot of information.
👏👏 Now that was awesome to watch! Love seeing all the original parts restored and brought back to life. Choosing between the KFX and the 426 is gonna be tough lol I can’t wait to see the Harley build! 🤘 best wishes for a speedy recovery on your shoulder 🙏
Thank you brotha! Sadly, I've decided the 426 will be a give away 😔
@@MichaelSabo I think KFX’s are super fun to ride so you really can’t go wrong with either! Whoever gets the EX is getting a badass machine! 👌
@@PeteHager that’s true i would probably keep the kfx i love the green on it and rossier pipe cant go wrong with rossier 😅
@@PeteHager uiiououuuu
Awesome video sir! Glad to know that I'm not the only one that misses components and has to go back and take stuff apart again and again! Once, I was actually putting together an aftermarket 400ex clutch basket, and had everything correct, and then while explaining it in the the video, I flipped the plate and secured it on backwards. I didn't even notice it until I was editing the video and had to pull the whole clutch side back apart and do it all over again!
Dude!! I've done that too lol; I had to split the bottom end of the KFX and put in a washer for the transmission; watching my own video saved my ass 😂 I appreciate the kind words man!
I had torn rotator cuff, the recover and physical therapy were torture mentally for me. But in the end im much stronger and healthier physically and mentally. Dont let yourself get down during recovery! Another awesome build on the 400! 🤘
Thank you bro, it's good to hear success stories; I'll come back 110%!
The 400EX is the most dependable quad I have ever owned. Bought one new in 2000, I still have it basically all original even down to the brake pads. Air filters oil changes and batteries is the only thing I have ever done to it. It is not my favorite quad, but if you want to go for a ride and not risk breaking down it's my best choice.
You still have the original brake pads on it from 2000? You must not have rode it more than once every year since you bought it
@@andrewstahl6916 at that point in time it was the first new sport quad released in over a decade. Soon thereafter there were many better choices. Until recently there used value was almost nothing, so there was no point in parting with a clean low hour machine.
Very accurate; the reliability factor is 10/10 on the 400ex
A Yamaha warrior runs without any oil 🤣
Just switched out the factory brake pads on my 2000 400ex last summer. I've owned it since new. Still looks brand new. Dont ride all that often but no way I can part with it.
Michael you done an amazing job on that quad that's been sitting for that long. Love your passion for doing rebuilds. I wish I had your knowledge and skills. Would love to have that quad knowing it was built by you. I hope your surgery goes well and recovery goes quickly for you keep up the awesome work.
Thank you for the kind words and support Knick1975!

The work you do with these machines that been abandoned is amazing seeing the night and day difference you never would have thought that it was left in a building for decades it’s amazing keep up the good work
Another Excellent build!! Your attention to detail and not cutting corners really shows your passion for a good running machine, and turning out quality!! Very good!! Glad I found your channel
UA-cam recommended this video, makes me miss my 400ex so bad. I traded a zero turn for it, was told it was bored over, jet kit, upgraded piston, etc. He said it was a “440ex” not sure if that’s a thing but it was stupid fast, speedometer app I had on my phone clocked it at 79mph before letting off halfway thru 5th gear. It was such a beast! Awesome and very detailed video, definitely had to subscribe!
Great build. Plus I appreciate you keeping parts still good. As a penny pincher it drives me nuts when people replace a bunch of good parts just cuz they can afford or for bragging rights so I applaud you.
Last 2 builds started up first hit. You are for sure taking the time and covering all bases. Great job!!!!
Loved it Sabo! These videos are so fun to watch, I love seeing your builds come to life! Tips, tricks and gadget tools, it's always cool to see how you troubleshoot, refinish and rebuild. 400ex was an awesome build, ive owned several, she's a beauty! Ps, the new logo may be best suited w the MS in black and the Michael Sabo in white (opposite). None the less, I dig! Peace brother!!
Thank you for the love Doug; I'm glad you enjoy the videos and thank you for the feedback on my logo too 🤘
You don’t give yourself enough credit you’re one hell of a builder. Beautiful quad mike
I can tell that you put a lot of effort into your builds and you take pride in your work, I really love how the swingarm turned out really nice orange red!
Thank you man; I was really happy with the swingarm too 🤘
Iv paused the video around the starter and drilling hole part to say something.... You do Fantastic work and attention to detail Thank you Mike for another Great Video. Iv got a 83 ATC250r that I need to get running. You are Motivating me to get this 6 year project started. I'm not as Mechnicly inclined as you and actually have a fear of tearing something apart and knowing if I'll get it back together. It's a real Fear. I also can't stop watching your videos from little Saraha!! You the Man Mike!
“i’m not gunna do a full rebuild…” meanwhile does a full rebuild😅 no hate, love it man
Fantastic build! Tearing into my 99 & adding a WISECO 11:1 piston, stage 2 hotcam & a K&N air filter. Bought it last June. Bike sat for yrs. Orig owner passed away & his widow put it in storage. I bought it from a guy who bought it a couple of yrs ago who barley rode it. The intake ports were still factory clean. I was torn to keep it oem or mod it out….I chose the latter 😃
Dude I never watch an hour of anything on you tube but I sat thru the hole thing and diddnt even notice, videos are coming out great and builds are awesome. I like the fact that it all gets done in one sitting. Keep em coming 👍🏼👍🏼
Awesome comment and thank you for the feedback on my longer videos!
Mike for some reason I thought that you were to clean and prepy to be a mechanic.so... this is a couple years later, I decided to give you a nother chance and I was truly impressed. You did a awesome 👌 JOB
Micheal you have slowly become one of my favorite content creators. I recently had my hip replaced and your content has made bedrest fly by. It's refreshing to see a young man using his hands and brain. My kids love seeing these projects and I hope when I'm back on my feet I can do a project build with my kids.
You Rock Brother, saved another one from the landfill and didn't just get her running but did her proud, I was a 2 stroker kid, went from CR 480 Elsinore and although everyone had trikes at the time 1986 I Got one of the first 1986 Honda TRX 250R 4-wheeler 2-stroker the things I did with that quad were amazing..keep up the good work, and hope You are feeling better....
Awesome job restoring this legend. You're doing Gods work saving sport quads.
Dude I literally have a 99 400 ex in my barn that I traded yard work for when I was operating a lawn care business. You have inspired me to drag it out and begin the restoration process. Thanks for this video!!
I’m doing a 2002 300ex right now. Do it you won’t regret it. Honda made some beautiful machines in the 90’s and early 2000’s
Ahh the 300 ex! I had a 90 something model when I was a younger man. Had a blast on it for years!
Now you have the coolest 400ex and the coolest 250r. Great job mike!!
Thank you Shane!
Our generation is notorious for torn rotator cuffs. Had my surgery last year I give you props on riding like that cuz it's seriously some shlty pain.
Great job and great video, Mike! I love the single episode builds. You put a lot of love and soul into that quad and whomever gets it next will be one lucky dude. Keep up the awesome work. You not only have incredible machine building talent, but you’ve also learned to rock the video production and editing side of things as well. Wishing you a speedy recovery with your shoulder!
That turned out really nice. Those ASV levers are, in my opinion, are a work of art. I actually run a set on my '85 ATC 200X.
The fcr 37mm or a 04-05 450r carb would've been a great upgrade over the stock carb. A must in my opinion. Either way the build turned out great!
I got a 04/05 carb Mike if your interested
@@johnbruzzi4381 info how is it
@@mxdirtboyz4225 you are interested in the carb. It's in perfect condition
@@johnbruzzi4381 Yeah I am what are looking to get for it.
@@mxdirtboyz4225 idk make a offer where are located?
Love the builds. Your the only channel I will watch videos that are an hour long or longer.
Love the vids, how complete they are and how much care/work goes into it. I think I liked the red and black look the most.
Man, that’s easily a 6,000 dollar quad. Amazing transformation. I would be honored to call it mine. What a beautiful machine, reminds me of my yfz 450r, miss that quad.
This shit is sick. I love the hour long complete builds. Great content man, keep it up🔥
Thank you for the feedback on the long videos Sam 🤘
this is honestly my favorite series i could watch these builds all day 😂
Great work as always. How you fixed the frame and stem was pretty neat. And that swing arm came out next level clean!! 🤩👏
Thank you as always shaun! The only thing that would make it better is a ShaunMX Thumb Throttle
I just watched your build on this and the 700. I'm 64and never had one but your work is amazing. It makes me wish I did have one though.
Man I'm newer to the channel and just wanted to say that you are really knowledgeable about working on engines
Thank you for subscribing and for the kind words Marc!
This is the first build video of yours I've watched and I must say you are a good atv mechanic.
Nice build. I would have put some lighting on it with it being a trail machine. I'd keep it. Love the 400EX. I have a 2007. Will never sell it. Thanks for sharing.
Glad you liked the build Bryan; a light is definitely in order!
Just got my 400ex started for the first time since November last year yesterday, other than some valve ticking it works great
Another beautiful build Mike! 👌🏾 Best wishes on a fast recovery from your shoulder surgery. And respect to you for not ragging on law enforcement for doing their job 👍🏻
Keep it up (please!). Def 1 of my favorite channels.
U did lot of work to it definitely came out nice 400ex are good bikes I had two of them when i was a kid fun times
Great build Man! I wish I had the patience to film and edit like yours. I'm almost in the home stretch on my current rebuild and wish I could document it as well as you. Good luck on the Surgery and Rehab!
Awsome build. Rebuilding my buddies 400 was a great time so awsome to see. Now I gotta pull my raptor apart and see what’s wrong with it. Just rebuild the whole machine after buying it for 500 and the starter went out.
Just an FYI, the oil won’t just flow from the tank to the crankcase, atleast not very quickly. The engine has to either turn over or run so the oil pump will pull the oil into the engine. Great stuff btw. I myself am a very big fan of the 400’s, my channel is based solely on 400ex content pretty much. I’ve got a fully built 400, check out my xc ready walk around video if you’ve got time. It’s got everything from long travel suspension to a fully built motor.
Thank you for the info and wow, very similar looking design when you first glance at your bike; I'll check out the video! I waited a good 30 minutes and not a drop flowed into the engine; it might have cleared when starting it but I didn't want the crank to be dry for initial start up; a good bit of sludge came out of the lower line; the oil was nasty!
Awesome job + video. Saving these old sport quads from the scrap yard is so important now that no one makes 'em anymore.
Urmosi throttle just become the best anti-theft system on dirt bikes... 😂
😂 Dual purpose!
I’m not worried about reusing the clutch disks, I’m more worried about rubbing anti seize on your bare hands!! ARE YOU A MAD MAN?!?
Damn Mike u killed that build bro! I swear you’re the king of cleaning parts and making em look brand new! Lol I’d be interested in buying it, how do I contact you?
No me lol
I appreciate that man. I am undecided what I will do with it; I'd like to do a give away with it but you can shoot me an email at michaelsabo350@gmail.com
@@MichaelSabo awesome 👍🏾
Detailing metal surfaces that had years of dirt and rust buildup is unbelievably satisfying.
I made skid plates out of stop signs.
i very much love the little skits and fun things you do thats why your the best atv and all around channel on youtube , you got talent as a mechanic and entertainer my guy
i just scored an 06 trx450er for 300 bucks. It being my first quad i've found this channel to be super informative and entertaining. I come from dirt bikes so i do have a decent bit of knowledge. but anything on the chassis or suspension i really dont know much about. But, from this channel i've gotten it running, done a parking brake block off, new levers and just general tidying up of things. It sat outside for 10 years and is pretty rough but thankfully it was all under a tree and is 100% bone stock down to the brake pads. I appreciate the knowledge mike :)
Sounds like an awesome resurrection man! I'm glad my videos could help you out 🤘
Hey dude! I'm a honda powersports tech and you did that old qaud justice that's awesome!
Mate it’s good for young blokes and older ones to do the research regardless of the plan, have ur manual ready and most of all don’t be afraid to give it a go!
You get some big credit by including a few blews (ozzy for mistake) it shows us blokes that even you fuck up but don’t lay on the floor and soon. You get back on it, good on ya bud
I just got one of these, I'm really happy because now I can keep up with my friends while riding
Dude, I cannot remember the last time I sat through an entire hour long UA-cam video. Definitely earned my like and sub. Looking forward to more content from you.
Awesome work. Major thumbs up.. not many people put time and effort into older machines..
I just bought my 99’ 400ex 2 weekends ago and I’m so happy to fix it and get it running
Michael, you are realist keeping in mind sharing tips and strategies on keep costs down while meet the goal.... incredible resurrection of a new ride. I came across your videos a couple years ago trying to help friend restore his Blaster and I been hooked ever since on what you have to show.
Recovery from surgery will take time to heal, but I am sure you will be coming up with some new ideas for future videos. Love that design for decals, very impressive.
I have a 2007 EX that has taken me to 5 regional championships and one national. Love the EX. Two of my regional championships was in bone stock form. Then I rebuilt the whole thing leaving only the frame stock. Putting out 52HP at the rear wheel now after the rebuild. Motor was done by a local guy and has lasted 5 session's without a rebuild.
Damn!!! I have a 2001 400ex that i havnt ridden in like 4 years. I wish i could do something just like this! So awesome to see. Bike looks amazing! Great job. From MA
Easily the best rebuild page on UA-cam
Wow, thank you for that!
Man, you brought that thing back from the dead! It looks almost like new again! Great job man😎
This thing is the ultimate oldschool build !! Awesome job on this one dude !
Thank you neel!
Nice build Mike! Isnt that aggravating as hell when you get something put together and then having to go back and tear it apart again….We’ve all been there brother
You couldn't have stressed the swingarm bolt anymore I literally spent three days like 6 hours a day trying to drill mine out of my 400EX! Like always Mike phenomenal content keep it up
I love this long format video. Not having to wait for the finished bike is awesome.
You build motors all the time but hey food for thought, make yourself a checklist to make sure these shitty days don't happen or for once you realize it's gonna be one of those days. Love the content brother!
Bro thank god scrolling through UA-cam and its all the same boring ass shit checked Instagram quick just for the hell of it and saw you posted a new video and went to UA-cam and here I am keep the great work up🤙👍 btw the videos great so far.
This is actually an awesome comment to hear man; thank you 🤘
I’m at a loss for words…this build and video was truly amazing! I’m blown away…
I have watched alot of your old videos and just realized i wasnt subscribed so i just did i enjoy your content and seeing you turn worn out machines into sweet rides.
Since first time i seen it in 99, i was always love the 400ex.
You made a crazy Nice one, you always do a good job, what a pleasure to watch your videos !!!
Thank you Michael...
Awesome comment, thank you man!
I'm not a fan of sport quads, I've always liked old utility quads, bikes and trikes .I like how this project is organized, planned ahead .Laid out and smooth. Unlike mine where it's a mess from start to finish. I subbed , I like your work.
Those things are a beast on the snow. I had a 426 build like 20 years ago. The header pipe would be glowing red in yhe night while riding in the snow.
AWESOME BUILD.....My favorite part is the attention to detail and NOT editing out the whoops areas when you forget to put stuff in like oil pump geatr and timing tensioner. (makes me feel better about my rework steps lol
I really like your graphics designs and how you let us know everything you change! Very informative
That skit at the start had me dying because i do be convinced someone took the spanner i left down and can't find 😂 small tip for the valve insert tool, lock it in a vice real tight and you can use both hands to work on installing the spring and that. Great video as always man 👍
Dude... thats a great idea putting it in the vise; I never thought of that!
Also love that you bring projects back to life
I'm going to have to say that your yard looks impeccable . Nice job on the quad , I also am a lover of all things dirt or anything with a motor !
That intro was great!
Damn bro ur now my go to binge watch channel ur definitely my spirit animal from your attention to detail and level of perfection u don't cut corners and your build shows it!
Be nice to have a quad built by M.S all the videos I've seen they look like masterpieces when he's finished with them.. Nice job bro👍
It’s amazing how far some tlc will go. Crazy how much better the front end and swingarm came out.
I don't ride. I don't build. I still seem to find myself loving every one of these videos.
This bike going to be awesome with all them new parts. Making me want another 400
Sic build for sure. I loved how you used the fog machine and lighting at the end of the video to show the final build. The quad looks like it has plenty of bottom end
I was thinking about getting me a quad n start making my own build I like that you put everything n every detail n your videos so I can see we’re certain parts go
I love how u do a start to finish build all in one video all these other UA-camr do it in about 5 or more videos. The 426 it’s a badass build I have the same one but it’s a 2004 before the new body style with reverse came out and I love it
I love your videos, i have watched a lot of them. One thing is the nut that was stuck on the hub that would not come off with a wrench. For that I usually would use an impact gun set up quite high and just blurted a few times usually comes off easier and then put it on properly. That's what I've done in a pass with stuck hubs, keep up the good work.
This is awesome! Havent seen any other youtuber put this much work into a build. Great job man
DAAAAAMN!!! $500??? You just don't find deals like that in California. Very nice build dude. Especially that swingarm. That looks SAAWEET! The axle and swingarm alone is probably worth more than $500. You scored.
The best part is learning what you do taking care of machines that need to make a comeback…it’s time to tackle a Trx450r
I watch all your content and enjoy each and everything you post . You have come a long way keep it coming
Dude my son was so excited that you did the funny 🤣 intro me and my whole family really enjoyed it keep up the great content brother. Good luck on your surgery I will keep you in my 🙏
Andrew, always awesome hearing from you and it put a smile on my face reading that your son enjoyed it too. This reminds me, I need to go back through my email!
Thank you for teaching me. I have learned a ton from your videos. I redo Predator 500s now for fun. I wish you lived here in SC. We could build these things together everyday. Deepest gratitude for all your hard video efforts to teach. Ken
