Marty, i think you missed a key opportunity to explain the role rumble played in shaping the sounds and attitude of classic rock's first wave of guitar heros. From Page to Townsend to Dylan, Iggy Pop. When this song came out, crazy to think, it was groundbreaking. Thanks for all you do.
Good rocking tonight, 57. Louie Louie I thing 57’ again. Strange Fruit 39’ “A Song Made Upon the Election of New Magistrates To the City” 1735 (Since that one is before the US was a country Ill half way enter that. Rumble the instrumental was banned in 1958. The only reason I know this is I’ve done a project on the history of music and the censorship of music in America
I'm always impressed with ur guitars being from Bakersfield I've played some very nice pieces like a idiot I sold my fav was a mosrite black widow pre acoustic brand
Sounds more accurate and nastier with a Dsus2. Just let the high e ring, so no middle finger on the D chord. Let me know what you like. Also a walk up of A-Bb to the B7 adds some more spice. Thank you Link for your tunes!
123412. Maybe the most important lesson here. People miss where the step down after the B7 starts. ....the lead position at 13 and 12 is big too, fixing second position barred E maj I and likely others first learned it as years ago. Well done. ....most people push tempo as well. It's a lazy shuffle.
Hey Marty! Your thoughts on the D chord.. I'm sure he plays the conventional D from time to time, improvising, but I think he generally leaves out the F# on the e string, playing it either open (Dsus2/A), or muted (D5/A). Move-over, both of these slash chords are inversions of an Asus4 chord, more related to the key, and the D providing the b7 tone.. Especially if one plays the open E bass string, adding some "Rumble!!!" Nice work!
Hi marty love your channel Was watching link play on youtube 11/12/84 rumble live. At the 12th fret hes not using His index finger do you know what chord hes playing??
Just watched Jimmy Page do this at ROF I was watching his triad he is not flatting his fingers hey when your Jimmy Page whose arguing LOLOL wicked song to play just fun, but how many players were influenced to pick up at guitar back then when they heard the Rumble ,
I vividly remember this being one of the first riffs I learned. Just a fun and important song that signified a change in the role of guitar. Cheers
Me too. The first time I got something out of a Guitar………
Jimmy Page loves this song
Yep
It might get loud
It has profound a teedude.
I believe this was the first recorded song that used distortion and Tremolo . Which made it stand out completely different for its time in 1958.
I heard tell Link Wray actually poked holes in the speaker cone to make it break up better….
And the first rock song with a power chord
Link finally got in the Rock HoF.. LONG overdue!
Good timing. Did you see Page perform this at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last night 11/3/2023. He used the double neck 12 string. Was great!!
Link's performance of Rumble at the Capitol Theatre NJ in 1984 is absolutely mindblowing & it's on UA-cam! 🙂
So simple, so dynamic, so Raaawkin' awesome. Thanks Marty. Hope you can do more of the instrumental classics of long ago.
I dig this song. Awesome lesson Marty!
Link Wray came out with albums in the early 70s "Americana style which are fantastic.

Meh. This is documented everywhere. I just came for a quick guitar lesson, not a history lesson.
FYI Rumble was the first and as far as I know only instrumental song to be banned from the radio for corrupting American youth.
I believe it was mostly due to the title
Good rocking tonight, 57.
