I've beaten 1,150 Men with 450 Heavy Cav, suffering 100 losses and stack wiping the French invaders as England, the one with weaker cav. Pretty good if I do say so myself.

+LOLISM NAS I dunno, I always considered France one of the strongest and best European countries throughout most of it's history, and I know you mentioned like most people do their apparent shortcomings in the modern era but I would disagree, in WW1 they did fine and in WW2 it was Germany's skill rather than France's lack thereof that counted, let's be fair they stomped over all of their neighbours equally. They still managed to amass one of the largest empires both overseas and on land, at least for a while, and their army in the roughly 17th to 19th Century was arguably the best, while Britain's focus was more it's Royal Navy. They were successful in the Thirty Years' War, decisively beat the First and Second Coalition, was one of the first nations to modernise its army in the wake of the Revolution, and they of course reached their peak in the Napoleonic Era. Today they're still one of the Great Powers (and they always have been considered one as well) what with them having nukes, a veto seat on the UNSC and one of the larger militaries around.

Recent English playthrough with SS 6.4, took Tripoli (Libya - I forget the actual name of the settlement) after the game's first crusade ended. Withdrew all my troops back to Europe and the French war except general, two crusader foot knights, crusader sergeants, three levy archers and a unit of peasants. Next thing you know, Fatimids roll up with close to a full stack of mainly urban militia, some African mercs. Took a couple tries, but managed to position my troops around the city properly to take account of chokepoints near the keep. Managed to break them all, then unleashed my general to run them down. Heroic victory.

His Holiness, the pope has called a crusade to reclaim the holy lands from the infidel, who would deny Christian pilgrims their right to visit the holy places. It is time for the armies of Christendom to put aside their differences and unite under one banner, the sign of the cross and give back Gods children what is rightfully theirs, or die trying!

***** I find it best to group up at the gate, position heavy archers on the walls and have them fire regular arrows, not the flaming ones. Have heavy infantry at the ready to support the archers if the enemy bring ladders to the walls. Keep mostly spearmen at the walls. This is my generic defence. Of course it depends on what the enemy is bringing, if they bring siege weapons, like catapults, I send all my cavalry out at the beginning and try to kill it, then have the remnants of those cavalry units hide outside, while the enemy army moves on my city/castle. IF the enemy army consists of mostly heavy infantry, I try to do the same with the cavalry to reduce their numbers before they get in as I tend to create more spearmen than heavy infantry.
Well if you let those in attack them from all side and then do a cavallery charge at them you will most likely send them running and if you're lucky the panic will spread.
i usually keep my calvary in the town square to guard, and place my ifantry next to the gates, but not 2 close so that artillary fire can hit them, or the wall will colapse on them, if i start to loose the ifantry fight i use calvary charges, and FYI be careful with archers on walls because they can be killed easily by cannons
@EmperorHarold I totally agree. Medieval II Total War must be my favorite Total War game. I have both empire and napoleon, but i was disappointed in those. M2TW is still my game of choice
I remember hearing this when I played my one and only match against my brother I surrounded him with cossack gunners then rushed in with cav when his units started to panic and run Shit was fun as hell

What I like with M2TW is that unlike RTW, where unless you played as one of the roman families it was just a Risk game without any real event happening, in that game there are tons more things that can be done like crusades, making the Pope happy, burning heretics, also diplomacy system is better, there's all the cardinal and Pope election system,etc. Plus they made the game more realistic and less cliched, like in RTW where gauls and barbarians were totally hollywood-style

Took Cairo to the tune of this song with a badly depleted crusader army. Nice.
If someone could just combine Medieval 2 with the ecenomical strategy and naval warfare of Empire and the awesome theme of Ancient Rome... oh boy.

Personally, Medieval 2 Total War seems to have the best gameplay of all the total war games, but I play Rome because of my own interest in the time.

Have heavy infantry at the ready to support the archers if the enemy bring ladders to the walls. Keep mostly spearmen at the walls. This is my generic defence. Of course it depends on what the enemy is bringing, if they bring siege weapons, like catapults, I send all my cavalry out at the beginning and try to kill it, then have the remnants of those cavalry units hide outside, while the enemy army moves on my city/castle. IF the enemy army consists of mostly heavy infantry, I try to do the same with the cavalry to reduce their numbers before they get in as I tend to create more spearmen than heavy infantry.
Well if you let those in attack them from all side and then do a cavallery charge at them you will most likely send them running and if you're lucky the panic will spread.

yeh im glad the battles need thinking out again, those sieges... man they can be tough
i usually keep my calvary in the town square to guard, and place my ifantry next to the gates, but not 2 close so that artillary fire can hit them, or the wall will colapse on them, if i start to loose the ifantry fight i use calvary charges, and FYI be careful with archers on walls because they can be killed easily by cannons
haha yeah you could say that, but keep in mind that the Egyptians he was fighting could simply have been the simplest of spear militia and archers...

I totally agree. Medieval II Total War must be my favorite Total War game. I have both empire and napoleon, but i was disappointed in those. M2TW is still my game of choice

What I like with M2TW is that unlike RTW, where unless you played as one of the roman families it was just a Risk game without any real event happening, in that game there are tons more things that can be done like crusades, making the Pope happy, burning heretics, also diplomacy system is better, there's all the cardinal and Pope election system,etc.
Plus they made the game more realistic and less cliched, like in RTW where gauls and barbarians were totally hollywood-style
