Cheers dude thank you , a lot of your stuff is featured in part 2 as well. Just gimme a shout out if you need a review or anything for your channel which im a big fan of ✅
I haven't even watched this yet, but it gets an instant thumbs up. The incredible amount of passion Bastich put into the previous Arcade history documentary, just tells me this is going to be amazing. It also doesn't hurt that the Megadrive was my first proper console (after owning Commodore computers), and still my favourite console of all time. Thank you so much for all the hard work you put into these documentaries, Bastich.
Cheers thanks dude , yeah the Mega drive was my big leap from my C64 to 16 Bit so im very passionate about the system and time period so I hope you enjoy it
The Mega Drive or The Genesis to us Americans was an incredible console. I had both the Genesis and the NES and I really loved both, but spent a lot more time playing my Sega Genesis.
Yeah I just loved Sega and their more risk every thing or try new stuff approach to game making and characters far more than Nintendo's by the numbers stuff . Enjoy the show ✅
Hey awesome video mate. Can't believe how much time you put into this one but it really shows how much effort and passion went into it. Well done buddy and really appreciate the inclusion in this epic Mega Drive showcase
Thanks dude , I know you can appreciate it with your editing skills you know how much work it was 😂 almost made me quit UA-cam a couple of times 🤣 but here it is ... Now i gotta complete part 2
I recently found this channel and I'm so happy I did. I watched your incredible 10+ hour Arcade history documentary, and now I can't wait to get into this one. Appreciate all the work you put into these videos (they're top notch btw) to entertain us, and bring us back to those amazing years.
Incredible video. Thank you for this. I grew up with a Model 2 Genesis and eventually a Model 2 Sega CD. I'm really looking forward to part 2 as even though I played a ton of these games I didn't get the Genesis until Christmas of 1994, Lion King Pack, what a great first game... My favourites on the console are (in no particular order): -Phantasy Star IV -Shining Force II -Earthworm Jim -Ecco the Dolphin -Sonic the Hedgehog -The Lion King -Alisia Dragoon -Desert, Jungle and Urban Strike -X-Men 2: Clone Wars -Robocop Versus the Terminator
I'll give you a thumbs up now. It'll take me a long time to watch it all, but I guess that's nothing compared to all the editing that was put in. Thanks for all your hard work, man.
I never thought i would sit down and watch a almost six hour video of any kind, Yet here i am doing just that. Amazing job on this documentary. Looking forward to sitting threw part two.
I was on team SNES but I did enjoy my fair share of Genesis games. Strider was a standout that showed that Genesis did what Nintendon’t at the time. Now I hope you’ll do a SNES documentary like this one…
It's fair to say this is a monumental documentary on the Megadrive with part two to come. So people don't understand how much time these take to put together plus the revision over the days and hours. I'm not a Megadrive person but I was entertained over the whole 8 hours.
Thank you so much for making this Bastich, really love your content (it goes great with cereal in the morning) and this brings me right back to my childhood. This is easily my favorite system and I love hearing about other 'kids' experiences with it. Really excellent work! Loved the arcade one too. I once knew another kid's mom who worked for Sega, it was like telling us that she worked at Area 51.
Hey Buddy! I'm still going. Only about half way through but man am I loving it! The amount of work you have put into it is amazing! You my man are a master of your craft. Just the amount of content and information is incredible! This clearly shows just how much passion you have for the system and retro gaming in general. Truly a kindred spirit! Thanks again for all the hard work you do! Keep it up mate! 😁
I have only watched the first thirty minutes , but have really enjoyed everything i've seen so far. I was sent over by the top loader and i'm glad I checked out your channel. I will have to watch the rest of this bit-by-bit but what a real treat.
Gonna put this on to fall asleep to for a few week. Thats a good thing btw. I fall asleep easier when i want to listen to something and this is perfect. Thank you ❤❤❤
What a treat for the weekend! Love the editing as always and presentation, you can tell it was so much work and passion. The Mega Drive was my childhood growing up after moving to the UK in the late 90s. Can't wait for Part 2!
Once again you deliver a downright great documentary video, bud. Watched every single second of it, and it was great. Looking forward to the next part. Rock on, B. 🍻
Incredible amount of content. Thank you very much for this. It makes it obvious that by 93, when the SNES started getting its really amazing and good games, mega drive already had hundreds of amazing games in its library. That channel Now in the 90s started basically showing 1993+, it missed all of these incredible games.
Thanks for watching , I find that a lot of channels completely dismiss the system as a whole and its 90s output , we always hear the blah blah nintendo is best blah blah story ... Its quite frustrating. Anyway , ill stop ranting 😂 thank you again for watching.
Wow. What an epic and very informative video. It has taken me the better part of 10 days to find the time to watch the whole thing. You are to be commended for the work that went into that. Really looking forward to part 2!
As a strictly SNES guy and SNES cousins. My mind is blown away with all the Genesis games. I can't fathom how a kid was to choose a game from the store ! For us, it was easy.
@BastichB64K absolutely. I'll gladly recommend it to anyone with an interest in the subject. In fact, there's a quite a few guys who, like me, had a c64 back in the day. I never had a megadrive, but I've worked for video games retailers 4 times in 90s - managed 2 of em, so all retro consoles interest me. PSX was first time I bought one though!
This was massive, what a great console and well put together mini documentary. It's really interesting how unique your experience is, the place you grew up made a huge difference and this is brilliant, you really seem to enjoy the whole spectrum of the classics, all genres, if the game is good, no matter what type of game it is, right? I see you have a lot of intimacy with Western games and computer games, from the same era, so I'm looking forward to your next videos as I find classic PC gaming underappreciated. You'll obviously get much more views from now on, as I didn't know about your channel and watching a 5hrs+ video about the Mega Drive with such passion and production values was unexpected. I will say, though, that you should try California Games on the Mega Drive without comparing it to the original version, since I was a kid, I felt it's a very enjoyable game and while tricky, once you get the hang of it, it's really nice. It's more of a remix than anything, interestingly enough, the Master System version retains the Frisbee section. We also played Krusty's Super Fun House a lot back then, my brothers and I had no clue this was based on an obscure computer game that has nothing to do with the Simpsons series. I could talk all day about our experiences with the Mega Drive at home. My brother and I also managed to finish Shadow of the Beast II (cartridge version) and we felt so proud at the time, as this game is hard, but has such a unique dark, primitive tribal atmosphere to it, the CD release is also interesting, I never finished that one so far, but I think the playability is worse, they added more animation at the cost of the agility of the cartridge release. Thanks!
Thx , I like to give all genre's a chance , its pointless hating a game you've never played or simply because its in a genre you dislike ... You should still give it a go right!? . If you had fun with cali games on the mega drive thats great , I've literally played every version thats the only reason I dislike it ... I try not to be negative as much as possible in the vids . I got tons of videos on classic computer games please check them out , I got a whole series dedicated to DOS era pc games you may enjoy and check out my 10 hour Arcade documentary if you want more of the same but with arcades of coarse🕹️😀👍
@@BastichB64K Yes, it's hard to find people that think like this, most will just like the same things over and over, hardly trying some things that are different to them. About California Games, I mean, it's a solid game, nothing wrong with this version, I think the opinion on this game in particular is biased, compared to the original, which isn't even the same game, nor even a port, but I'm not an expert about all versions of this game, I'm only familiar with the SMS version, along with California Games II for the SMS and the SNES, I like them all, but I prefer the Mega Drive release. I'll surely check the arcade video as well, and keep up with the backlog from your other videos as well.
This is a Great documentary and some of the most detailed and informative I’ve ever seen, as massive fan of the Mega Drive, this is a dream come true, my only criticism is that maybe you should have reviewed Strider in more detail as that game was not only a fantastic port but it was the game that brought the 16 bit era into the present. You got a new sub, I’m looking forward to part 2 of this series.
I was 14 when I got a Sega mega drive for Christmas in 1990..got the altered beast and Alex kid,I was so gassed I took my mega drive to my friends on Christmas Day 😂
Another youtuber that I don't know recommended your video. Well I am here so it better be worth it. A video dedicated to the PC-Engine/Turbografx16 is always great, but I am not sure about a genesis video. Suerly you will talk about the Tunder Force series and that will be great (I bet you will forget to mention that Gates and Lords of Thunder are the last in that series). Nice meeting you good sire, I hope you efforts and sacrifices will get you covered in gold or at least paradise at the end of your life.
Finally I'm reaching the end. That last half hour took me four attempts. lol I have to say, Ecco is definitely not overtly difficult. It's just a bit challenging, because it's quite different. Modern gamers mostly ack both patience and skills, because modern games are really just *far too easy*. It's why I've basically stopped playing anything at all. Too much handholding, too easy success. You know what I'm talking about. :)
Cheers the Saturn is my fav as well , I just started a new Series called Sega 100% , you may like it 👇 ua-cam.com/play/PL6INIIutFTeoNATiN9kZ7AWvt6afwK_-R.html&si=Coi7cgChn0MGHzdf
I would argue that thunderforce IV is the best megadrive game ever made it has an amazing development history and how they basicly used exploits in the megadrive allocating det extra memory to make the music sound that good. Its definitely the most impressive game and was even rivaling neogeo titles overall fidelity. And why they havent released it in any sega collection or even as an emulated game is just mindbaffling! I for one am ready to pay to have it on my ps5 and playing it with analog sticks is a dream come true if they did that.
@@BastichB64K i have still not found a game in that genre that i like better gley Lancer is an amazing game and blazing star xexe or pulstar are great games but tf4 makes you feel like you are in an anime or something.
FIVE AND A HALF HOURS! NO WAY! WHY ARE YOU DOING THIS TO ME! WHY! THIS ISN'T EVEN FOR THE C64 AND I STILL HAVE TO WATCH IT! AAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH D: (that'll cover the mornings of my whole next week and you can be damn sure I will comment EVERY SINGLE TIME I CONTINUE WATCHING!). ... :D ... Edit: AND IT'S A TWO-PARTER D: ... There. With that out of my system ...... *clicks play*
Yuzo Koshiro is making this awesome shoot em up for the Sega Genesis need to go to this place Cartridges Galore and buy me a Genesis it had so many awesome games Contra Hard Corps Castlevania Bloodlines Sonic 1 2 3 and Sonic and Knucles every Golden Axe and especially the shoot em ups that system had so many gems in the genre hence Thunderforce 3 and 4 Gaiares Twin Cobra
The depth to which you go with these videos is incredible. And the way that Ozzy geezer seems to be on the verge of a meltdown is really funny - wait...that IS just his act, isn't it?! And you gotta be the first to mention a strategy game where you play only as the nazis!! I'm amazed at this game - and in 1991 too??! Wow!
That is just normal Todd no filter 😂😂 he's very passionate about games , really nice guy and entertaining. What annoys me most when people do these retrospectives on the Mega Drive is always how they completely disregard any game that wasn't a massive common hit ... Therefor its just the same 5 games over and over . So much interesting releases on this system and they really all need to be celebrated 😎🕹️👍
@BastichB64K yeah, all those more 'obscure' games is one of the stand out things about your uploads. Hey, whilst your here - the ghostbusters c64 video, is it uploaded yet?
It's really strange to compare Megadrive's Ghouls'n Ghosts and Super Nintendo's Super Ghost and Goblins / Choh Makaimura games. It's a totally different games in mechanics, gameplay and graphics.
Loving this , refreshing seeing someone on youtube saying sega properly , its even funnier to me how wrong so many americans and australians say it when even their adverts said it right
It's more the way we Australian's pronounce words, with "Se-ga" we say the same with "Be-ga" cheese that we have here. Basically we say it how we have been taught to
Yes no problem mate, and I will also add that the Sega Master System is where it all started for us here and the Ads were nothing like the Sega Mega Drive ones so we never really saw commercials saying "Sega" the way we saw them later. But even when we did see them eventually we just kept saying it the way we already did with the master system lol@@darran311
01:37:07 "Save a certain kid first on a level" to transform into the robot? I dont think that is correct. The way to transform, at least for the graveyard level, is to get hit by a meteor by, if I am not mistaken, climbing over the third tombstone at the beginning of a certain section (cant reacll which one). Not sure if there are different ways to transform in other stages though. But I am almost sure it was always a meteor at determined locations.
It is, its simply i didnt explain it fully so im sorry . In order for a meteor to appear you have to collect a specific kid first on a lvl thats what i meant . Sorry for the poor explanation 😔😔
@@BastichB64K Oh, got it. That makes sense. I actually didn't know about the kid order condition, so I guess that ezplains why I wouldn't see the meteor sometimes. I thought I just wasn't fats enough lol. Thanks for the reply and explanation!
Thats not a question I can just answer so easily, there's sooo many games . Part 2 of the documentary comes out on December 6th and has another 350+ reviews
Megadrive games size are Mega-BITS ,not bytes. A 6 megabyte game would be 40megabits- and yeah, that would've been the largest cart at the time, but phantasy star 2 is just 6/8s of 1megabyte. 8bits to a byte. Used 5o confuse the hell out of me as a teenager!
I just love how detailed your content is. You show images and videos of EVERYTHING you talk about, as you're talking about it. This is just ONE of the many things that separates your content from the 1000s and 1000s of others trying to cash in on the retro phenomenon. It's no surprise that other UA-camrs want to appear in your videos
Merpeople. Merpeople? Is that a real word? :D **_googles_** ... hu? ... "Merfolks, Mercreatures, Mermen or Merpeople are legendary water-dwelling human-like beings. They are attested in folklore and mythology throughout the ages in various parts of the world." Merpeople! Ha! Hilarious! :D
Formula 1 has no visibility in the US. I grew up in Europe, watching a Grand Prix is an event... In the US, nobody cares (the same way they are the only country in the world that "don't know" about Captain Tsubasa). So I am not surprised they prefer a mediocre quad game over a great F1 one! The succes of Sega, and the Genesis or Megadrive, has a lot to do with the commerical alliance Sega did for each country. You can't even put all the Europeans country in the same bag, there are some major differences. It is an interesting story!
Yeah formula 1 is non existent in the US , the quad game is so bad its still surprises me regardless of that , what got passed over here for release . And yeah I know about a lot of the various exclusives for each European country its simply too much information to try cram into a video , it would require its own video just to cover all that stuff properly. Thanks for watching.
@@BastichB64K I am still watching the video, and enjoying it. I hope I didn't came accross as being bitchy because I only have respect for the fantastic job you did. Great video. Thank you!

Cheers thanks a lot , 2nd part comes out in the 1st week of December 👍👍 its 6 hours long 🤣🤣🤣
If I didn’t born in the late 98, I would of been buy all the classics games 😭 I enjoy watching your videos 🙌🏾
Thanks for watching , much appreciated
*_*noms beef soup*_* *_*clicks play at around 3h*_* Got a lot of catching up to do!
I was 14 when I got a Sega mega drive for Christmas in 1990..got the altered beast and Alex kid,I was so gassed I took my mega drive to my friends on Christmas Day 😂
Great Christmas present !! 🕹️👍👍
Ok .... Sure 🤣 enjoy the show
yOU ARE always AGREAT REFERENCE MAN. Great job, aleways.
Cheers 😀👍 thx for watching
Finally I'm reaching the end. That last half hour took me four attempts. lol I have to say, Ecco is definitely not overtly difficult. It's just a bit challenging, because it's quite different. Modern gamers mostly ack both patience and skills, because modern games are really just *far too easy*. It's why I've basically stopped playing anything at all. Too much handholding, too easy success. You know what I'm talking about. :)
Yeah that's why I said that , its challenging but not difficult, I barely play modern games at all either 😂
Amazing videos
Cheers thank you 😀👍👍
Great compilation! Modern day Peta members, lmao!
😂 thx for watching
My favorite console is Sega Saturn, but Genesis is in second. I love SEGA!
Cheers the Saturn is my fav as well , I just started a new Series called Sega 100% , you may like it 👇 ua-cam.com/play/PL6INIIutFTeoNATiN9kZ7AWvt6afwK_-R.html&si=Coi7cgChn0MGHzdf
4:49:45! This actually took me longer than the c64 top100!
🤣👍
Geez Bastich ill have to take a day off work for this one....Money is overrated anyway lol
😂😂 thats what im talking about , relax and enjoy it all 👏👏
This video is 5h 40 mins and that's just part 1? Count me in 😅
🤣👍 enjoy it there's a lot there to see 😂
Thanks
Cheers for watching
I would argue that thunderforce IV is the best megadrive game ever made it has an amazing development history and how they basicly used exploits in the megadrive allocating det extra memory to make the music sound that good. Its definitely the most impressive game and was even rivaling neogeo titles overall fidelity. And why they havent released it in any sega collection or even as an emulated game is just mindbaffling! I for one am ready to pay to have it on my ps5 and playing it with analog sticks is a dream come true if they did that.
Yeah its really excellent, one of my fav shooters on the system easily on all lvls
@@BastichB64K i have still not found a game in that genre that i like better gley Lancer is an amazing game and blazing star xexe or pulstar are great games but tf4 makes you feel like you are in an anime or something.
@@mattias969 that is true! ✅
😂👍 absord the info , enjoy the show and don't forget to share it up 👏😃
01:25:24 Strong "Outlander" (SNES) vibes
Yeah Outlander may have borrowed some elements from this although both still didn't quite get it right
Yuzo Koshiro is making this awesome shoot em up for the Sega Genesis need to go to this place Cartridges Galore and buy me a Genesis it had so many awesome games Contra Hard Corps Castlevania Bloodlines Sonic 1 2 3 and Sonic and Knucles every Golden Axe and especially the shoot em ups that system had so many gems in the genre hence Thunderforce 3 and 4 Gaiares Twin Cobra
Yeah I've seen clips of that new Yuzo game , it looks awesome 🕹️✅
@@BastichB64Kloving this video so much nostalgia and I'm also stoked Mega R-Type is coming to the Genesis
@@johngavalas712 yeah finally the Mega Drive gets a port of that classic
@@NickTaylor-Phantom-Works2 yeah I left the link to it on you other comment about it , its also in the documentary section on my channel 👍
@@BastichB64K aw brilliant mate. Found it. Thank you dood
It's really strange to compare Megadrive's Ghouls'n Ghosts and Super Nintendo's Super Ghost and Goblins / Choh Makaimura games. It's a totally different games in mechanics, gameplay and graphics.
?? Ghosts and Goblins was never released on the SNES in any form.... So im not sure what you are talking about ??
Loving this , refreshing seeing someone on youtube saying sega properly , its even funnier to me how wrong so many americans and australians say it when even their adverts said it right
🤣👍 thanks for watching
@@BastichB64K not finished yet but good vid so far
It's more the way we Australian's pronounce words, with "Se-ga" we say the same with "Be-ga" cheese that we have here. Basically we say it how we have been taught to
@@TheTopLoader82 thanks for that, I find that interesting because at least that gives it a logical explanation
PAL SlowMotion Games 😊
😉👍
Vermillion is almost a 16-bit Dragon Slayer 2: Xanadu
Yeah thats true 🕹️👍
@@mellowgeekstudio no problem 👍👍

The first two games (Space Harrier and Thunder Blade) was a disappointing port. But Altered Beast was awesome!
Where do you live in canada Bastich? I live in vancouver bc canada
Alberta , used to live in Vancouver
Merpeople. Merpeople? Is that a real word? :D **_googles_** ... hu? ... "Merfolks, Mercreatures, Mermen or Merpeople are legendary water-dwelling human-like beings. They are attested in folklore and mythology throughout the ages in various parts of the world." Merpeople! Ha! Hilarious! :D
😂👍
Thank you!
@@migueldias8546 no probs dude , you are correct there's a lot of story there to talk about . Thanks for carrying on watching its much appreciated 👍👍
So really it's pronounced serga

No mention of Hayao Nakayama ? He was responsible for Sega as a video game company.
I literally say in the beginning "a Brief history of the company BUT the focus of this is 90% on the games" , I could do a whole 5 hour video on just the history alone mentioning every little detail .. this is not that video . Thx for watching.
Just another channel who think PAL areas are some South American countries and Europe. I'm out 5 mins in
