A real trip down memory lane, spent the first 16 years of my life in the 70/80s in a small south east England costal town and the arcades were a large part of that growing up, and this documentary really helped bring those memories back. thanks to all those involved in producing this.
Been waiting for the directors cut which seems like forever. I'm so excited to sit down and watch this. I've lost count of how many times I've watched part 3. This will forever be one of my favorite documentaries. Hearing the history of all these games is amazing, but I equally enjoy listening to all of the stories about everyone's experiences at the arcade. I can't say enough great things about this documentary.

This is an amazing project! Well done. Growing up my dad had a Royal Guard Pinball, and a Tempest Cabinet. I'm two years older than Atari. We were very close growing up! What a ride these last 50 years. I got to watch the world go from analog to digital. The industry has gone from one person making a game. Cut to now hundreds of people to publish a game! We went from one playfield to boundless worlds. I still play today. Old and new I have 30 consoles from Atari to Xbox. I even work out with VR. Gotta stay healthy. I want to see where the industry is decades from now. Even though this paragraph is kinda out of place. No matter how old you are, don't let anyone tell you you're too old for your passion. I've been accused of being a manchild and hey that's okay. I think that I'm youthful, but not childish. And I think that people should do what makes their heart sing. You can have my joystick when you pry it out of my cold arthritic hands. Edit: Sorry so sloppy. Kinda late, and kinda stoned.

@@BastichB64K no probs 👍 well I went to boarding school in Joberg, spent most of my free time at an arcade in Hillbrow called Alley Pally I'm 99% sure that was its name, I remember it so well they had around 60 cabs I'd say, to this day I can still remember what games I saw for the very first time there! Lived in the orange free state in a place called Virginia but there were no real arcades there just lots of corners shops and cafes etc all of which had cabs 👍 such great memories and your videos bring it all back! ♥

The idea of Atari being responsible for the North American video game crash is way over-blown. Their arcade titles were still top-notch in 1983. The decline of the arcades was really due to the negative reaction to video games by the media coupled with home computers beginning to make strides in gaming while allowing parents to feel that they're offering their children a platform to aid them in their education. It was simply a shift away from arcades and consoles toward home computers. Atari was mainly just a scapegoat.
@@michaelfowler5760 Kind of a mixed bag. 2600 Yar's Revenge and Defender II (Stargate) were pretty good. 2600 Pac-Man and Defender, not so much. The stuff on the Atari 800 was well done (Pac-Man, Pole Position, Galaxian, and Defender).
@@michaelfowler5760 True. There was also a completely different culture between the arcade and home divisions; with the arcade side turning out far superior products. Yes, the arcade group had better technology, but their deadlines were just as tough as that of the home division (moreso in some cases) and a game still needs to have great replay value. There's a good interview with one of the programmers of Major Havoc that details the difference in culture between the two. Despite all that, the people programming the home games were getting way more money than the arcade programmers (especially in 1982 and 1983).
Thanks for a fantastic documentary, this has really been an eye opener and learning for me, growing up in Sweden with, at least in my experience, very limited access to arcades, many games I had never seen or heard of before. Through the weeks it has taken me to watch through this I have in parallel played some of the games on my Analogue Pocket, and I even bought an arcade stick to get closer to the real experience. I've found many great games and arcade favorites that Ive enjoyed playing by myself or with my kids. Thanks again Bastich B!

Man, what a HUGE documentary! I'd like to thank you for putting all together! Believe me, the arcade scene here was a huge thing here in Brazil back in the 80s, specially in Rio and São Paulo.
@@BastichB64K In big cities, like rio and Sao Paulo, the arcades and pinballs were quickly updated. The old machines were sold to smaller towns. So, every trip to a small town in the country side was a chance to discover old arcade and pinball games. This is true even today.

Great documentary. I think this is the best i have seen on this subject. My favorite arcade game is Tempest. But also in my top 5 are Bump N Jump, Pacman, and Hard Drivin'.
This was massive, thanks! One thing I noticed is how remarkable the NEO GEO is, right? Basically each year of the 90's had titles made for this 1990 board ranking among the best until the 00's. Proof that great games always had their place in the market, even without cutting-edge tech. SEGA, Konami, Irem, Data East and more left their older boards behind, but SNK kept on giving. The CPS III is obviously more powerful than the NEO GEO board, but Garou is just as impressive, if not more so than Street Fighter III.

I'm from South Africa and a lot of these are bringing back really excellent memories. Particularly the old Arcade on Durban beach. Spent so much time in there as a kid on holiday and it was always awe inspiring and exciting looking at and playing all the machines. I definitely remember that mechanical periscope one. Loved the video. I grew up in the 80s and didn't have many arcades near me but the ones did love and many fond memories of. Thankfully Arcades are coming back into fashion and have emulation so can play what I missed out on before! Thank you!
Thank you for all your hard work in creating this, man talk about memory lane. Looking at PC games now and what I use to play on the Atari 800XL they have came a very long way quickly. I remember that stupid Atari cassette drive wait 20 minutes for a game to load and right before it loaded you would get an error. I eventually got a Atari Disk drive which made the loading a little less painless. Unless I missed it one of the laser games I didn't see was Space Ace also by Don Bluth, who also drew all the Dragon's Lair characters. I was in a arcade just recently called Dave and Buster's and the newer gen arcade cabinets are way crazy now.

Thanks for a fantastic documentary, this has really been an eye opener and learning for me, growing up in Sweden with, at least in my experience, very limited access to arcades, many games I had never seen or heard of before. Through the weeks it has taken me to watch through this I have in parallel played some of the games on my Analogue Pocket, and I even bought an arcade stick to get closer to the real experience. I've found many great games and arcade favorites that Ive enjoyed playing by myself or with my kids. Thanks again Bastich B!

Tremendous job on this , dude. Pretty much all of my student loan when i should have been studying was spent in the student union arcade bar in the 90s footie sports beer and awesome 2d and early 3d coinops. It never left me. Still a gamer - still loving the buzz. Ten hours of arcade heaven 🎉

Man, what a HUGE documentary! I'd like to thank you for putting all together! Believe me, the arcade scene here was a huge thing here in Brazil back in the 80s, specially in Rio and São Paulo.

@@BastichB64K In big cities, like rio and Sao Paulo, the arcades and pinballs were quickly updated. The old machines were sold to smaller towns. So, every trip to a small town in the country side was a chance to discover old arcade and pinball games. This is true even today.

Great documentary. I think this is the best i have seen on this subject. My favorite arcade game is Tempest. But also in my top 5 are Bump N Jump, Pacman, and Hard Drivin'.

One thing I noticed is how remarkable the NEO GEO is, right? Basically each year of the 90's had titles made for this 1990 board ranking among the best until the 00's. Proof that great games always had their place in the market, even without cutting-edge tech. SEGA, Konami, Irem, Data East and more left their older boards behind, but SNK kept on giving. The CPS III is obviously more powerful than the NEO GEO board, but Garou is just as impressive, if not more so than Street Fighter III.
It was very impressive, I loved that they used it for the whole decade and it held up well 👍

I'm from South Africa and a lot of these are bringing back really excellent memories. Particularly the old Arcade on Durban beach. Spent so much time in there as a kid on holiday and it was always awe inspiring and exciting looking at and playing all the machines. I definitely remember that mechanical periscope one.

Loved the video. I grew up in the 80s and didn't have many arcades near me but the ones did love and many fond memories of. Thankfully Arcades are coming back into fashion and have emulation so can play what I missed out on before! Thank you!

Thank you for all your hard work in creating this, man talk about memory lane. Looking at PC games now and what I use to play on the Atari 800XL they have came a very long way quickly. I remember that stupid Atari cassette drive wait 20 minutes for a game to load and right before it loaded you would get an error. I eventually got a Atari Disk drive which made the loading a little less painless. Unless I missed it one of the laser games I didn't see was Space Ace also by Don Bluth, who also drew all the Dragon's Lair characters. I was in a arcade just recently called Dave and Buster's and the newer gen arcade cabinets are way crazy now.
