I'm in the middle of my practicum and we have to watch 15 videos to reflect upon. This is my third one done by you. I have to say there was this interesting moment when seeing you made this in January of 2020 and you were talking about plan for March. What a different world. I'm currently working on my MAT for Secondary Social Studies after my MA in History (I focused on post-war Japanese occupation of foreign media as socializing for my thesis) and have struggled to find good resources for our content area as an educator in training. It was almost always close-read ELA style content so it was hard to get an idea of what the current approach is. I will definitely be using these along the way and watching more of your videos!
I think as a literature teacher I’m also teaching history. 8th grade is focusing on the Harlem renaissance and Civil Rights Movement right now, and the Holocaust 4th quarter. love your idea of establishing a big theme!
They run hand in hand for sure! Reading is one of the oldest activities humans still do, I feel books always mimic reality and vice versa. and because of literature, we were able to preserve so much history for future generations 😊

I appreciate you mentioning other perspectives. I was shouting Yes! My mission is to decolonize Social Studies . I actually start with the voice of the marginalized group. For example , I start my unit on imperialism/ colonialism by reading Things Fall Apart . I then branch out to traditional lessons and perspectives . I do highlight marginalized groups following the diversity calendar because it provides an opportunity to learn about and celebrate people and topics. I really enjoyed this video and am excited to find more History people. I am interested in learning about your research . Sadly, I don’t know anything about the history of the U.S. Virgin Islands . I’m currently applying for a Masters in History fellowship. I have so much student loan debt I refuse to take out another dollar in loans.

You cannot rewrite history because it's not written the way you'd prefer it. Which is what is driving me to potentially become a history teacher myself.
So...I feel like we are kindred spirits. It is refreshing to see another person so passionate about history and teaching history from this historian lense. I am going into my third year teaching. I'm the only person in my department with an actual history degree so sometimes everyone looks at me weird for how I do things in my classroom. I too use TONS of primary sources. I can't wait to go through and watch some of your other videos. I am hoping there is a video about helping students read primary sources. I teach eighth grade US history right now and I am constantly fighting students to read. It is exhausting. I would love tips on how to make the reading aspect as tolerable or memorable for them as possible. Unfortunately most of them don't share my natural curiosity when it comes to historical research. 🤦🏼♀️

It covers colonials, Great Awakening, Common Sense, US Constitution, social reforms, the Gettysburg Address, Lincoln's 2nd Inaugural Address, muckrakers, the 14 Points, Red Scare and immigration restrictions, objectives to the New deal, the containment policy, Truman Doctrine, Great Society, McCarthyism, Civil Rights Movement, and Reagan's era of new conservatism.

While it certainly helps to have some sort of coaching background, you can increase your chances of landing a position in many ways. My biggest advice is to work on getting additional endorsements. ELL and Reading Specialist certifications will go a long way towards helping you find a job. Also, look into getting endorsements in other content areas as well. Foreign language would pair up particularly well with history for obvious reasons.
I’m gonna be transferring to a CSU and my biggest fear is not being able to remember everything as much as I love history I’m struggling trying to retain ALL the information and Tips???

I currently teach Ancient History, but yes, during the Reconstruction Era there were SO many discriminatory laws passed based on race. You can simply use the primary sources to show how legislators were essentially obsessed with race. There were many books published with “white supremacy” in the title. So if any students feel any resentment, they can just direct it right toward the authors of the texts.
Do you know if there is a website that has a recommended flow for reading the textbook? I’m a first year 7th grade teacher in California and I’m having some difficulty on how fast / slow to pace the course.

What is your undergrad in? Are you a history major or an education major?! I would love to teach 6-12, either history or English. In Texas, if you get an education degree you can teach 4-8. If you major in History with a teaching certificate, you can teach 7-12.

I hate to say it. But for tip 3 don’t just learn facts I disagree. I have asshole professors who lecture heavy and like their stuff only regurgitated to them the exact way they told the fact. I hate it. I’ve only had 2 teachers like that. But also tips for history teachers have fun wit it. Don’t torture students by making them present every week. It makes them nervous if you approach it wrong and hate you.

I had very few situations where I had to rely on memory! It was mostly written assignments with lots of analysis.
