    One of the most popular General Motors nameplates over its history is the Chevrolet Impala. The Impala story started back in 1956, when Chevrolet introduced a great looking show car at the GM Motorama show called the Impala. The show car offered a fiberglass body and became a big hit with consumers who enjoyed its great styling.
    The very first Impala SS arrived in 1961, when Chevy offered either a 348 V-8 or, later that year, the very first 409 (the latter of which just 142 were built. This two-door “bubble-top” started the Impala SS craze and some look at it as the first true muscle car.
    I this video we’ll focus on its last years of production.

    Purchased mine on July 2nd 2021 and loving it everyday. I'm the third owner and when I got her you can tell her previous owners gave her that TLC. I can't wait to restomod her down the road. I've had people give that look of admiration and does it feel good. Truly the best investment I've ever made.

    This was my all-time favorite car when I was a Senior in high school and in college my friends had 9C1 caprices and I envied them. Now these cars are super hard to find especially in good condition but my favorite year would definitely be a 1996 in black.

    I'm not sure why American cars switched to metric for their engine sizes. Maybe because everyone else was litres and they wanted to point out that 5.7L was way bigger than your import car's 2.0L or 3.0L? This car should say 350 on the side. And then drop in a 454.

    Had one. 96, black, floor shifter, analog gauges. The 94-96 V8 cars had a rear axle problem. The 9c1 and Impala SS had a axle that sat and inch or so too forward. GM was too cheap, to fix it, so you had to get correct trailing arms.

    My brother and I used to go to our local GM dealership and test drive cars to kill some time and burn some rubber. One day we decided we needed to test out an Impala. They didn't have any on the lot that day, so we chose a Roadmaster wagon. The sticker said it had the 5.7, dual exhaust, and a 3.42 geared posi rearend. We took it out for a spin. If you put it in manual low, the traction control would keep it from doing a burnout. I quickly figured out if you left in drive and got the tires spinning, you could toss it in low and do some 100 + foot burnouts. We burned half the rubber off the rear tires, waited for the smoke to clear out of the interior, and took it back. That car ran good!

    Certain English language phrases make their way into everyday language that have their beginnings in the automotive world. For example. did you know the phrase, "It's a dusey!" meaning something extraordinary, of great value, is short for Duesenberg? It's true. And so is, "It's the Chevy Impala of bicycles, or washing machines, or ANYTHING that the person using the phrase is describing something of value, good quality, nothing extravagant and affordable for the masses. I still use this phrase often "It's the Chevy Impala of (fill in the blank). Legend is a bit of a stretch. It's a Caprice with a detuned LT1 and some fancy rims on it. Hit 0-60 in the 7 second range and handled like a boat. Cool looking car, but driving wise, nothing amazing. Similar to the Mercury Marauder, although these are easier to mod.

    Very well done, interesting video. Still, I just can't get past the fact it's an extremely expensive 4-door sedan that in GM's glory days would have been the bottom of the line Biscayne model. It was very overpriced when new in the mid-90's, just like the SSR truck was in the 2000's, BUT I would rather have that truck in a heartbeat over these very un-beautiful cars, and I've never been a truck guy. The Australian Pontiac GTO coupe a decade later (also very overpriced) was still much closer in concept to the classic models of decades ago. The styling arguably was more BMW-like bland, but better that than disastrously attempting to try copying a circa '69 model like the revived Camaro a few years later looking like a fat, freakish take on the '69. At least the latter recovered with the drastically improved 6th gen body style at mid-decade, and will be ending its run on a positive note in that regard. Expect price gauging on top of the already astronomical prices on the 'farewell' editions.

  • @rogergoodman8665

    This might be a semi fast car but a muscle car it is not. Everyone today seems to think if it has a V8 it ls automatically a "muscle car" Having grown up at the end of the one and only true musclecar era, I'll tell you and everyone else what a muscle car really is. It has to be an intermediate body style, (no full size or 4 doors)only only have 2 doors, have large displacement engines, and be affordable. This car is nothing more than a rebadged Caprice Classic with Impala SS callouts. The modern Camaro, Mustang & Challenger are not true musclecars either as they are "pony cars" plus they are a million miles from being affordable. Corvettes are also not a muscle car. The only true "Musclecar Era died in 1974.

    • @nikothevirgo
      @nikothevirgo 2 роки тому +5

      You and many others love to say "rebadged Caprice" completely ignorant to the fact of what a Caprice is and what it's whole introduction came from. Very irrelevant & tired statement... The caprice came out as a luxury trim of a 4 door Impala. A Caprice was literally an Impala with Caprice badging. When it came out in 65 it wasn't even it's own car it was a trim. If you were so invested in your era you'd remember right? The Impala SS was discontinued is 69, after that there was only non-ss versions and caprices. The caprice became more profitable and the Impala was discontinued in 77. In 94 they returned the Impala SS (concept car came out in 92) & why on earth would they not return the Impala SS with a body from something that has the name tag that came FROM the Impala... So to you a GTO is "nothing more" than a Tempest 🤔? 61-64 Impala SS is "nothing more" than a Biscayne Bellaire 🤔? the Chevelle SS is "nothing more" than a Malibu 🤔? & the Grand National is "nothing more" than a Regal 🤔? etc etc. Hell even in those cases the sportier versions didn't come before the less sporty versions like the Impala/Caprice case... It is nowhere near like what Ford Motor Company did with the Marauder. The marauder and crown Vic never shared the same body and were not trims of one another before. Not true for the caprice & impala. And if you really want to be super duper technical it ended in 72 & not 74. I've heard many many old timers say that. And if this isn't a muscle car then what are the 5.7 R/T, Scat Pack, SRT 392 & SRT Hellcat Chargers to you? I bet I couldn't see you in the Charger comment sections saying they aren't muscle cars. Since the amount of doors matter so much. Hell the hemi charger was never a 4 door before. You cannot say the same for the Impalas, they've always had a sedan & wagon option, SS package options could be ordered for both in the 60s. But no one seems to say the chargers are not muscle cars because of the doors so what's the difference? It's definitely more than what you think it is. Even Chevy knows they could never bounce back from this, they tried to revamp it multiple times and failed, never had anything remotely a true muscle ever again. They tried it back in 2002-2004 & again in 2006-2009 but it's wasn't even rear wheel drive which was a mockery (no muscle car guy wants FWD that's silly... Mopar wouldn't dare) & in 2014 they even took in a foreign car through a temporary export program & rebadged the imported car and called it the "Chevy SS" not an Impala just "Chevy SS" and it didn't do too well with the American muscle car Enthusiasts for one very obvious reason. It wasn't American . These are not muscle cars from "the muscle car era" but that era is long lonnggg gone.... For the new generation these are our muscle cars. You don't have to accept it. That's fine. It's already accepted as such by many people, old timers and young folk.
