Cat 955L Run or Not Buy or Pass

  • I have seen this old Caterpillar 955L sitting unused in a yard for many years and decided to check it out. If I can get it running and it runs well it will make a great addition to the Fortress Project. With the tracks it should hopefully make it up the trail to the top. The price seems worth the risk!

Wow Alan! I was skeptical, then excited when that old Cat started, and thrilled to hear you decided to buy it! Les’ reaction was priceless. Skeeter is awesome for helping you get it to the mountain! That beautiful old Cat will be a great asset to you up on the mountain, and down at the depot also. Congratulations on a great find Mr. Wizard!! ❤️🙏

Those pallet stacks were a great first test to see how well it would get around the tight spaces up on the mountain.

I have almost the same 955L, an 85J serial number prefix. I had to do a good bit of maintenance on mine. One issue with shifting can be the linkage. Make sure all the joints arent worn or frozen. Also where one linkage arm enters the top front of the transmission can get worn out. The bushing thats worn is inside the trans. Just weld a heavy washer to the outside of the trans case to keep the rod centered. If you find the transmission fluid level is going down the bevel gear case fluid is going up, thats because the trans pump and steering pump are piggy backed sharing a common shaft. As the transmission pump wears out it lets fluid transfer into the steering pump which dumps the fluid into the bevel gear case. I can tell you all about pump replacement or you can get by using a transfer pump to manually move fluid from the bevel gear case back to the trans. The most common leaks are the engine rear main seal and the torque converter input seal. I have done the TC input seal but not the engine rear main. My TC was really bad, engine is a slow leak. Happy caterpillaring.

Back in the day that 955 was a high production machine
A cation for you when working it set the throttle to full so you don’t burn out your transmission clutches just bump the decelerator when you change directions or pull up to a truck you’re loading
That thing will chew through your mountain

Also they made several different types of buckets for that machine
A demo bucket with grapple’s and a 4 in one

On Fortress Mountain, where secrets entwine,
Lives Allan the wizard, with powers divine,
His golden hair dances in the whispering air,
A magician of wonder, beyond compare.
With robes of stars and eyes of deep mystery,
Allan weaves spells, a tapestry of history,
His incantations, a symphony of old,
In his fortress of magic, tales unfold.
Upon the peak, where the eagles dare fly,
Allan stands tall, under the open sky,
His laughter, a potion that sparkles and flows,
As he conjures enchantment wherever he goes.
But oh, dear traveler, keep your eyes low,
For below the mountain, a surprise in its glow,
A secret untold, a marvel to see,
A gift from Allan, a treasure set free.
So heed the wind's song and the leaves as they sigh,
For Allan the wizard, with powers that lie,
In his fortress on high, with golden hair gleaming,
A realm of enchantment, forever seeming.

That was my favorite working machine of the 1970's. I dug many swimming pools, ponds and basements and even went under houses that did not even have a craw space in the Wichita, Haysville, Derby , Kansas area to Hutchison , Kansas and all between. I also owned a D-10 , Cat and made more money with my 955 in a week than I made with my D-10 in two weeks and many times a month. . I was an owner of a Commercial Tree and Stump Company as well as owned an Excavation and Trucking Company who moved to the Wichita, Kansas area after two devastating Tornado's in the area in the early 1970's froom St. Joseph, Missouri. I was also a sub Contractor with South Western Bell and buried Fiber Optics all over the area between North Wichita to Hutchison, Kansas and the small towns between. I was also the Contractor belonging to Parkview Southern Baptist Church who with Rev. Clyde McClain spear headed the reopening of the Arkansas River Baptist Camp and setting up the Sand Pit on it's land to help finance the rebuilding and renovation of the Cabins and other areas buildings and grounds. In the 1970's I was known all over the area. The biggest event of my time there though was when I stood up against their so called Great Hand to Hand Combat Champion Mr. Carpenter. and hung him by the foot when he thought he was going to give ma s side kick maneuver. His show Marshall Arts program did not measure up to that of the 101 St. Airborne program.

I come from South Australia and hear you raving on about Cherry COKE & not Pepsi.
Ive never ever seen Cherry Coke until Tues just gone. I did see and try a bottle of Rasberry coke in a bottle and it was pathetic.
I ended up buying just one can.of the Cherry and was really pleasantly surprised.
Its actually really nice and will buy up a few cans or maybe a carton of it, seeing its a never seen before flavour.
I reckon it actually has some spices in it.
A vast difference in the horrible, never buy again Raspberry YUCK!
Thanks for your raving which was the reason I wanted to try it for myself.
I love your show and am si impressed with everything youve been doing 'up in the clouds' - well nearly.
I am VERY VERY impressed with all that work youve been doing for so many years!

Victory to you Alan. When you started that CAT it sounded much newer than what it looks like. Because that model number label was ripped missing the letter, if the specs plate is still on the machine, the model number should be listed on the specs plate. Your videos are highly informative, even if I'm not going to use any of the information that can be gotten from a video it doesn't matter to me because it's interesting content. Just like in hockey, "He shoots, he scores". Goal to Alan. Keep up the good work.
