Imagine...you turn on the Elvis Special in '68 expecting to see the good guy, clean cut, boy next door Elvis from the past 8 years in the movies...then suddenly a black-clad Elvis is staring at you saying "If you're looking for trouble..." The effect, even today, is mesmerizing.
A good thing, it could have been a christmast songs special, if everyone agreed with Parker. This is one of the few times people did not do what Parker wanted.
Grew back the sideburns, slimmed down, hair looking good but the #1 thing, the thing that made this great was the fact he was motivated, he cared, he was pushed, and he basically said f-you to Parker and took control. It's a shame he was insecure because of Parker. 68 and 69 Memphis sessions he did it his way and showed why he was still The King
I remember how it was billed for months as not only Elvis' first TV special, but a Christmas special, as well. But rather than a traditional opening with a traditional Christmas song or medley of Christmas songs, it started with an extreme close-up of Elvis' face warning viewers "If you're lookin' for trouble, you came to the right place." To say people were surprised would be an understatement. No TV special was staged the way this one was. Basically a 'one man' show. There were no guest singers, no celebrity friends dropping by. The band was 'on set', but off camera. Certain numbers had a backing track.
The 68 Comeback Special will still stand up against any music out today. It showed the world that Elvis still had it and could do it better than anyone else. There will never be anyone that will top Elvis !
I think elvis make America 🇺🇸 great 👍 he is really mazing fantastic really 👏 this artist is unique phenomenal 👏 high top in rock n roll blues jazz ballad country music 🎶 wow man thank you Susi and Travis we love you

As an Elvis fan for so many decades , it is great to see new fans pointing out finer aspects of his performances that I have either taken for granted or more importantly not being a musician overlooked. Anyway another great reaction guys.
You can’t go wrong with anything from the 68’ Comeback Special! Thanks Matt. Every time I think of something you’ve suggested it! You two are my favorite Reactioneers. I’ve been a fan since I was five years old. I am now 65 years old, closer to 66.
Trevor don't know if heard but elvis was so nervous before he came out that he told the producer that he couldn't do it ! Thank God he changed his mind ! That comeback special was on fire !love your elvis reactions !❤
"Guitar Man" is a song written and first recorded by the incredible guitarist Jerry Reed. Elvis actually recorded several of his songs. Elvis liked this song enough to open his comeback special with it. Jerry Reed was such an amazing guitarist, that while recording Guitar Man for his studio version - Elvis' session guitarists couldn't figure out how he had played it. They had to call in Jerry Reed to play on Elvis' official release. You should check out the original Jerry Reed version, plus his other songs Elvis recorded, - such as "U.S. Male". Jerry Reed was great, but Elvis made them his own!
I loved that plus the other thing Jerry said to/about Elvis "Elvis I'm not gay but you are the prettiest guy I've ever seen"...lol...thing is Jerry's right
It,s like he said to music industry boys you want some you get some ,and when guitar man starts it,s like he saying boys hang on because your in for a wild ride tonight
This year there is coming a new documentary about the Comeback Special. „Elvis & STEVE: The Making of the Comeback Special“ It‘s a documentary from Steve Binder himself, will be release in 5/23.
this was suppose to be a christmas special, the Col. [his manager] wanted Elvis to wear a Christmas sweater. can you imagine Elvis wearing a xmas sweater?
Guitar Man is such a great song....Elvis always does justice to someone else's songs, if not does it better and makes it his own. Check out Jerry Reed's Guitar man.
Elvis 1960- 1969 was absolutely second to none. Nancy Sinatra said that come back special was Elvis Presleys zenith. She was in his Speedway movie 1968. His movies were also underrated. King Creole, Follow that Dream 1962, Kid Galahad, Roustabout 1964, Change of Habit 1969 and final movie was great.
He was head of his time being that this was created in 68 set the stage for eveything that can after for music video, specials stages set ups that is why he is and will always be the King of Rock and Roll
I’ve just watched an interview with the art director for the Comeback…he said the frame everyone was dancing on was reused for the large “ELVIS” and was also used in different configurations for the Gospel Medley etc.
Elvis and Priscilla had recently given birth to their daughter, Lisa Marie, so Elvis was in good spirit and was excited for the future for many reasons. Soon after he would start a residency in Las Vegas, playing 2 shows a night, totaling over 600 shows in a 7 year span. He also began touring again, but never got the chance to have aworld tour due to his manager being an illegal alien to the U.S.
Elvis making Rock n Roll LOOK COOL AGAIN heading into the 1970s, just like he did in the 1950s. Now the Beatles have ALREADY BROKEN UP, and Elvis is back on TOP AGAIN! Now all the classic rock and hard rock bands are watching. SO MANY BANDS' LEAD SINGERS get inspired and influenced. QUEENS FREDDIE MERCURY. ROLLING STONES MIC JAGGER & KEITH RICHARDS. BILLY JOEL. KISS GENE SIMMONS. AC/DC. thousands of well known bands credit or should credit Elvis. "Elvis is the greatest cultural force in the 20th Century. He introduced the beat to everything and he changed everything - MUSIC, LANGUAGE and CLOTHES. It's a whole new social revolution. The '60s comes from it. Because of him a man like me barely knows his musical grammar anymore." - Leonard Bernstein.

These artists became the basis for Richard's musical foundation. Billy Joel- Beethoven, Chopin and Debussy, along with the great American composers, Copeland, Gershwin and Ellington. His more contemporary influences include Dave Brubeck, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, The Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. Ac Dc - The Young brothers pretty much shared the same musical influences. When he was a young lad Angus was influenced by the banjo, a british band called Grapefruit, Little Richard, Malcolm Young (For Angus and Angus for Malcolm.), Jimi Hendrix, John Lee Hooker, and Keith Richards. You could thank Steve Binder for that opening and for that entire comeback special. Look him up on UA-cam. He is a legendary television Director who recently turned 90 and speaks about Elvis. Steve is an Emmy award winning legendary music and television Director and he’s portrayed by Dacre Montgomery in the movie that you saw -he’s the guy that got Elvis to be the rebel that he was in that 68 special. But there was an entire orchestra. Those were just dancers holding fake instruments.

Younger people nowadays tend not to realize what things were like back in the day without the reach of the internet, social media, and technology in general. People were much more connected with Elvis, the Beatles, whoever their favorite artists were. Even with Michael Jackson. You had to physically go out to buy a record, usually a single first, then the whole album. Other than his initial years on the road performing, the Army thing and aside from the music, and some special appearances, Elvis was really only seen in movies for 8 years until this 68 Special. So that 75 million is quite impressive for the day.
I don't get the 1968 comeback thing? In 1968 he made three movies. In 1969 another three movies. He was always around, even when he was in the army. From 1956 to 1969 he made 31 movies.
@Jer Per * For 8 or 9 years Elvis abandoned Rock 'n Roll because he was stuck in movie contracts which he hated. That was not the REAL Elvis, the one who shook the world in the early 50's. He couldn't wait to get back to who he was, so after the movie contracts were done he did this Special to show everyone the old Elvis was back and ready to rock and take on the world, and he "came back" with a vengeance! The Special was called "Singer Presents...Elvis!" (Singer sewing machines was the sponsor.) But after it aired, the media and the fans dubbed it "The 1968 Comeback Special".
@@ihatechange BS. Stop spewing garbage and get educated. Elvis released a myriad of rock and roll hits throughout the sixties. He certainly did not hate doing movies, either. If that were true, then he would've hated working with Ann-Margret, and all the other big names. Elvis only hated the 'singing to the girl and beating up the guy' routine that his movies adopted. I bet he enjoyed making Charro, 100%. No singing in that one. It's his best role and the only one that Hollywood took him seriously enough for, to not force him to sing in the movie.
Its one of his songs from his movie King Creole, from 10 years earlier. The comeback special had a sort of theme around Guitar Man, with musical scenes. When you see them all, it kind of makes sense.
