      For decades, when any French director has decided to go for it, they GO for it. In the 2000s, French films got gnarly. From Irreversible to Martyrs, horror or art, they were and are not playing around.

    I thought it was interesting that it was like a fairytale where she makes a pact with a witch, except the “witch” is basically one of those gray market labs that sells imitation Ozempic to anorexics online. It feels almost comedic that talking to their customer support is like talking to a thousand year old demon. She’s listening to hold music and then the representative is like “You opened the puzzle box. We came”

    Coralie Fargeat is a fearless filmmaker! She looks at directors who play with subtlety and restraint and laughs in their faces. Subtlety? What’s that? No, her style is all about overexposure and throwing the message right in your face. It's not about fearing the audience won't get it; it's about making them squirm. Filmmakers who play it safe with soft realism have no guts! This film is raw, repulsive, and unforgettable. Watch it-yesterday.

    Me and a friend both went to see this wanting to enjoy it a ton and we got out of theater being quite conflicted on it. For me, the film looks amazing and has great performances but i just personally got nothing out of the content. The characters felt pretty one-note and the symbolism is so on the nose and heavy handed. And when the film is 2 hours long, that can wear on you very quickly. I'm glad many are loving this and i really wanted to as well but i ended up disappointed with what i got.

    I would love for you guys to review the Wild Robot! I saw it with no expectations, and found it to be visually beautiful but very bland and empty in its story. I expected it would be seen as a basic kids movie and fail to receive much hype from adults, only to discover that everyone else is loving it and it seems like the story really touched a lot of people. I’m not sure if I missed something, or if it is somehow just speaking to others in a way that doesn’t do it for me. But I’d love to hear how you two react to it.

      @@womancarryingman It’s less gross 😅 If you survived The Substance (pregnant on top of that!), you’ve definitely got Titane. It’s nowhere near as gross and horrendous. However, it’s more nuanced, so IMO, if people aren’t able to digest the metaphors, symbolism, themes, etc. then the movie is definitely meaningless to you as a viewer. Because the meaty part isn’t in the obvious, but behind it.

    Good review. This is definitely a fascinating film. I agree that the over-the-top aspect works. What makes it work is it shows you things visually in a visceral way instead of preaching to its audience, and also, I think, because it contains quite a lot of humor. The film is dark and horrific but it uses comedy to blunt the impact of the extreme gore. I think when it comes to the concepts, at first I thought it was a problem that the shared consciousness aspect of the film didn't work, and I still don't think it does in literal terms, but this isn't a science fiction film. It's a satirical film which presents a strange alternative reality that is almost closer to a fairy tale where scientific explanation is not important. The special effects are incredibly convincing for the most part. The only criticism I had was that it was somewhat derivative of other films. A morality tale is a good way to describe it, and I think Fargeat, the director, said that the idea of the film came from her experience with cosmetic procedures and the dangers around addictions that form out of trying to retain beauty at all costs. So it's not just the usual cliches about beauty being overvalued. I think that's part of it, but it has more of a personal, psychological dimension like you guys mention. It's also good to see Qauid, a very talented actor, and Demi Moore who haven't been in the limelight in recent years. Quaid I think had drug problems, and his potential as an actor was never fully realized. But both give good performances in this.

      My issue is that the movie wasted too much on being grotesque than being meaningful, I'm pretty sure people will forget this movie in a few months because it's not a really good satirical interesting movie, it was fun and I enjoyed it but I will not remember that movie for its message, it was pretty weak.

  • @johncra8982

    It's one of the rare films where I actually didn't feel like the runtime was justified because I could so clearly see all the sequences that were way too drawn out and undermined themselves with the repetition, and I thought "that film needed an editor" and found out afterwards that it had THREE editors, one of whom was the director herself 😂 So I guess that staple criticism should be amended to "this film needed ONE editor, someone who ISN'T the director". I don't think Demi Moore has any standout moments worthy of a Best Actress nomination much less a win (no the scene where she prepares for a date isn't good enough) and the whole thing just made me wish I'd watched something like Carrie instead. Also, God, the flashbacks were the most obnoxious I've seen in years (Dennis Quaid's thought bubble face on the recipe book 🤢). It got to the point where I was predicting which scenes or which audio from past scenes they'd replay (everything in its right place, too bad her b00bs aren't in the middle of her face, etc) and seeing how many I'd get right. I had to stop to cover my ears because of how obnoxiously loud the ending sequence got. Shame that Fargeat got nominated over someone like Robert Eggers, but this is one of the worst Oscar years ever anyway so 🤷‍♂️

    It's impressive that nobody got that the movie is not about beauty standards (just a little). It's about insecurity and the dangers of having beauty as the only meaning of your life.
    Like, nobody found Elizabeth ugly, is just that her idiot director made a cold commercial decision.
    She would have a pretty good life if she just found a hobby, dated that guy and kept being sue half the time, but she was too insecure to find beauty in herself, and didn't found any value apart from being pretty. At no part, does the movie shows society doing anything. Like the rating being low because of elizabeth being ugly or something.
    But you know....society bad.

    • @StephanieLeighG
      @StephanieLeighG 3 місяці тому +4

      People treat Elizabeth badly multiple times in the movie, and the movie makes it very clear that the exact same people treat younger more attractive women better. They also included a man who is going through the exact same thing. This movie is very blatantly saying that older people are ignored, partly for being unattractive. Not sure how anyone could think this movie isn’t about beauty standards, or that Elizabeth should have dated that weird fan. I felt really, really bad for him, but she never should have called him at all. I’m not saying the movie doesn’t imply that her biggest problem is her selfish obsession with being worshipped by strangers. I like that the movie makes it obvious that it’s not all society’s fault and her narcissism is a huge part of the problem.

    • @gabrielalfaia8154
      @gabrielalfaia8154 2 місяці тому +1

      @@StephanieLeighG Well, she build her whole life ONLY on her beauty, so when that sand castle fell of course she will treated differently. I don't thing people treating her rudly is a problem AT ALL. For whatever is going on in her mind in just a mild inconvinience.
      Quick note: it was not just a weird fan. It was a childhood (or teenagehood) friend of hers from before she was famous. That's why, for me, it was a genuine shot at a relationship.

    It didn't explore much, it spend a lot of time on shiny ass rather than doing interesting critics and thoughts. I enjoyed the film for the end that at least is generous but the message of the movie is pretty damn off, not a well written movie but well directed and original. The main point was to make something shocking rather than morality, which is a bit of a shame as the subject is more important than ever.
    And as a french, I'm a bit tired that french directors do weird sexual movies. The Cuties movies were also by a french woman. Is it what the country of cinema can only offer...

    I understand why you disregard the complaint of not making sense, but for me the fact that there was so much constantly through the whole thing that didn't make sense really kept me from getting into the movie. If it didn't have the air of taking itself seriously in the first half I could have enjoyed it for something that is intentionally absurd, but they didn't really do that until after building into the absurdity over two hours and only really let loose at the final 20 minutes or so. The acting was good, the effects were good, and there were interesting parts to the story / ideas but I was not able to click with it at all so couldn't even really view it as a comedy unfortunately. 2/10
