Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing at Wacken Open Air in 2013, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K+ audience.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
As I saw, you enjoyed the powerful performance of the band. Hope you'll continue on this path.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

It's very hard to compare floor to any female vocalist out there, she is in a league of her own.
Another Soul Snatched by the Valkyrie Goddess
Most Americans reference the Amy Lee vibes. No worries. It is what we have been fed in The States. Most females are diva pop singers. You will find that there are only a couple of things Amy and Floor have in common. Both like to were black and both are beautiful dark haired women who tend to sing songs with emotional and moving melodies. However, Floor sounds like this live without the aid of autotuning and rarely is left gasping for breath and straining to hold out ever word to the end of the phrase. Amy is amazing in the studio, however live she has difficulty sustaining her breath control and is a bit pitchy. Evanescence is wonderful and powerful on their studio recordings. Live in my opinion leaves a little bit to be desired. On the other hand Nightwish' studion recording are very good, but live they are a whole new experience. In my opinion, this is a dark romantic lost love song. Wanting to be reunited in death with a love so deep you are willing to give up your life for reunion on the other side. Tuomas, (keys) is the main composer of music and lyrics for Nightwish. Influenced by poetry and movie soundtracks. The beauty of poetry is we can each find our own interpretation of the meaning of the song.

I agree with you almost entirely, however, I've noticed that Amy Lee has improved her live singing quite a bit recently. Thank goodness, because I really do enjoy her music, too, but I just didn't enjoy seeing her perform live.
@@AGDinCA I am happy to hear that my friend. I really love Amy's music. Perhaps she has been working on her breath control. Her melodic writing has usually pushed her very hard vocally in the studio. Some singers and their producers don't take into account the demands on the human voice to perform these songs live night after night. It is not something to be taken for granted. This is also why many great singers as the age cannot sing their own songs very well when performing live. All the more reason to praise singers who can do it. Floor unlike most vocalists is amazing and her ability to sing long and sustained phrasing throughout an entire metal performance. Even the greats tend to cut their phrasings and sustained notes performing live verses their studio recordings. Not to mention that in the studio they have the convenience of taking separate attempts at the longer sustained notes and the help of studio wizardry and technology. Great for Amy however from what I have heard her band also lacks a little in the reproduction of their sound on record. Probably not their fault, just hard to reproduce the production used on Evanescence records. Be well.

@@beldin2987 That was one of the reasons I quit listening to Nightwish when Tarja left. Never got used to Anette. I rediscovered Nightwish at this show at Wacken 2013 and was completly blown away by Floor.

To be fair the Amy Lee comparison is completely fine and understandable for the first 2 minutes of the song. After that though Floor goes way, WAY beyond Amy. I think we only roast those who make the comparison after they heard the whole song.

Now for real, many of us love watching those reactions to Nightwish, like all of them, and then if you hear that comparison for 100th time, it gets just a little anoying... but that is just worth a remark, no acid...
You will soon understand that Floor is incomparable. There is NO ONE on this earth that can sing like she can. She has a once in a generation gift that she has thankfully learned to share with us mere mortals. Don't quite believe me? Try "Mama" from Beste Zangers 2019, or "Ghost River" from Wacken 2013, or...the list is practically endless. I envy your journey into the Nightwish/Floor Jansen rabbit hole, the first trip down is incredible! Arizona chapter of the Nightwish Army signing off.

Well stated, Stephen, from a couple of aged senior citizens and passionate NW fans of three years, from the great high desert of southeast Arizona. In all our years we've never experienced someone with such a remarkable singing talent. In Floor you get so much more like very captivating stage presence and the way she captures the emotional essence of each song. She is also now blessed to be teamed with the tightest symphonic metal band on the planet and their remarkable composer and arranger, our Metal Mozart, Tuomas. We think our newest reactor is going to enjoy his journey with NW and we've subscribed to follow him. Stay safe and enjoy the ride.

As a youngster listei g to Led Zeppelin Deep Purple tece and later as a late teen to AC/DC Judas Priest KISS etc…… I have never been so in captivated like I have with Nightwish and that voice enigma Floor Jansen. Hoi Martine, ik hoor en zie naam de laatste tijd zo vaak en net als jij ben ik een die hard Nightwish fan, al meer dan 20 jaar! Maar jouw naam zie ik nu pas opduiken. Dat zegt niets want die van Gabriel leerde ik ook pas kennen nadat Ann Waychoff was overleden. Ik denk dat jij dan wel weet over wie ik het heb. Ik zou graag met iedereen pp 28 november iets voor Ann organiseren zodat ze na anderhalf jaar mog niet is vergeten. Floor Jansen is a vocal athlete with incredible range, versatility, vocal stamina, and stage presence. She is a spinto soprano with a range of almost four octaves (D3-G#5-F6). When listening to her sing, it is apparent that she has spent the better part of her life fine-tuning her instrument with help from several vocal coaches. Floor can sing in multiple languages and genres and is a Master vocal coach. It is incredible how she is able to take any song from any genre and make it her own. Think of Nightwish as the band where Wagner, Bach, Hans Zimmer and John Williams meet Mettalica, Iron Maiden and Pantera. Its an all star cast led by one of the greatest composers of our time, Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) and fronted by one of the greatest singers of our time. Welcome and enjoy, because there are no two similar songs. And Symphonic metal is basically classical music with electronics and electricity.

Yes Amy Lee is a female lead vocalist with pleasant voice and one of the few female fronted bands in USA so we are used to the comparison. Usually lasts for half of this song. Then you realise just a fraction of Floor's ability. Have fun with Gabriel's list. By the way 82,000 at this concert. 15 songs all written for previous singers and Floor nails every one.
And that was just ticket sales and was limited to that number - I've worked a festival over several years (I met my wife doing so) and putting on a festival of this size in what are cattle pastures the rest of the year takes an absolute army of workers and volunteers, merchants, caterers, labourers, security, backstage hospitality, amusements, electricians, plumbers, scaffolders, riggers, technicians of all kinds, fire marshals, first aid - the list is endless and accounts for probably several more thousand pass holders.
Wacken Open Air is THE European metal festival - there are others, but Wacken is the one that stands above all others for consistency and most metal bands would give a kidney just to play, never mind headline there. To put it in context, Alice Cooper warmed up for Nightwish on the adjacent stage, then as headliners, Nightwish had exclusivity, with no other stage active (I think there were five, plus a few more relaxed venues, that year), and they closed the show. Well, who could follow that?
So with no following performance to prepare for, most pass holders would also have been in the audience.
And to add to that: Amy is just a fraction of Floor like 1ft short... 😇

Unfortunately, the 6 foot, Dutch Goddess of all things vocal, Floor Jansen (yan•sen), was acquired almost a year before this performance because their previous singer, Anette Olzon, was fired from the band late September 2012 during this same world tour. So none of the songs she performed up until 2015 were recorded with her on a studio album.
Her first studio recording as a member of Nightwish was for the 2015 album "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" and her second was "Human Nature" released in April last year.
They are currently touring Europe in support of Human Nature and will be in the United States in May 2022.
Don't get me wrong, I say "unfortunately" because I too would love to hear her voice in the studio recordings of these songs, however, founder and keyboard player, Tuomas Holopainen, already stated that the studio recordings will remain as is in respect of the previous singers and as much as the band may or may not admit that Floor is the best thing to happen to Nightwish, that's not going to change.
You are going to love this journey. The rabbit hole goes deep, so buckle up and enjoy the ride.

The obligatory Evanescence comparison…I’m not going to roast you for that, but some may, unfortunately. As a fellow American, I can relate to having no other point of reference for what you’re hearing than Amy Lee, but I think you’ll find as you listen to more of Nightwish’s music that there is quite a distance between them. Floor has much more range and versatility. The band, too, is very diverse in their sound… no two of their songs really sound alike, but all are good. From this same Wacken 2013 show, I’d recommend Song of Myself, Storytime, Romanticide, and Everdream to get started further down the rabbit hole.
Amy Lee is more familiar to many, but i think Sharon Del Adel from Within Temptation is closer! Sharon even has a duet song Paradise with Tarja (1st Nightwish singer)

Hmm, careful with the E-word comparisons - for some reason people get riled up when Floor is compared with Amy. I'm sure Floor doesn't care and as far as I'm concerned I put it down to only having heard 1 small 5% of what Floor can do.
If Gabriel hasn't been yet he will soon and will give some guidance if you wish to continue the journey but be warned once you dive down the rabbit warren you may just get deeper and deeper and never escape.
Once the Valkyrie Queen gets you you're lost.
You have yet to hear Marko, the bassist, sing. One of the best male metal singers currently. Unfortunately he left the band back in January fir health reasons but listen to Devil and the Deep Dark Ocean, Romanticide or several others, to hear him with Floor. What a combination.
Tuomas writes complex music and his lyrics are almost always very important to the song. You picked up on that - kudos!
82,000 at that concert and not a single duff song. Floor's first really big concert with them - could you tell she was nervous? Thought not.
The huge fan base is the Wacken Open Air, one of the largest metal festivals in the world. The flaming bull skull on the left is its symbol. There are over 80,000 viewers each year and Nightwish was the headliner that day. The concert has a special atmosphere because Floor is only an emergency substitute here. After the tour, she becomes an official member of the band.

Nightwish is a glorious rabbit hole of awesome, with world class song-writing, musicianship and arguably (or unarguably to most who've heard her enough😉) the best and most versatile female vocalist alive today (maybe ever), the Valkyrie Queen of metal herself Floor Jansen (pronounced Yansen). Floor is a classically trained soprano and has a vocal range of more than 3 octaves (D3 to F6+).
Floor is the third female vocalist that Nightwish have had (and my personal favourite), she was only with them on tour for 10 months at this point and officially joined the band in 2013, she is still with them today.
The other vocalists are -
Tarja Turunen - (1996-2005) - (Finland) - Very operatic focused vocals.
Anette Olzon - (2007-2012) - (Sweden) - More pop-centric vocals.
Floor Jansen - (2012-Present) - (Netherlands) - Extremely diverse vocals, from deep growls to full on opera.

Floor herself is Dutch and is another glorious goldmine of awesome as she has a lot of non-Nightwish related stuff (including 2 other bands, After Forever & ReVamp) that she has done that is all pretty amazing as well. She is also an absolutely lovely, funny, smart and grounded person (in fact all the band members are exceedingly down to earth individuals). She has her own channel here on UA-cam where she regularly posts covers of songs.
The band was formed in 1996 by lead songwriter/composer and keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen.
The name of the genre they generally belong to is Symphonic Metal but their discography is extremely varied.
The "Symphonic" backing tracks of their music is composed in the majority by Tuomas and performed by the London Philharmonic Orchestra.
This was the 13th song in this particular set, Floor is belting notes like that the entire set.
Nighwish are almost always better experienced with live versions of their songs if at all possible.
Most new reactors are better off sticking with the Wacken 2013 set to begin with as it offers a taste of a lot of what Nightwish has to offer, they have multiple concerts though all of which are superb.
Some suggestions for more songs for you to continue your journey would be Romanticide, Storytime, Ghost River, I Wish I had an Angel, Song of Myself, Ever Dream, Dark Chest of Wonders, I Want My Tears Back and Amaranth all from Wacken 2013 (pronounced Vacken).
Saying that, anything from Wacken 2013 is golden really to start, there's a reason why that set is pretty legendary at this point, 82,000 people were in attendance.
Beware of some messed up slowed down versions of the Wacken 2013 songs as they can take the energy right out of the performances, just check the comments on them and I'm sure someone will mention if it's a slowed down version.
Your choice obviously but I'd avoid Poet and the Pendulum and The Greatest Show on Earth for now until you are more familiar with the band and it's history, they will make a lot more sense and be more enjoyable for you that way.

Their musical style can be called symphonic metal, they didn’t invent it but are the biggest and best known band in that genre. Unfortunately, in metal music, it’s a marginal metal style. So no wonder if you haven’t heard of it before.
Are they big? Yes in this metal style. When the first and last virtual gigs of their careers took place in May of this year, there were over 150,000 of us ticket buyers from 108 countries.
Tuomas Holopainen (keyboards) is the main composer and lyricist. A story emerges in his mind, he himself says he hears it as music. Then the band tells it through music and lyrics, like you just saw and heard. And the feeling is the same as reading a good book, you never know what will happen in the next chapter of the book ... It keeps the music interesting all the time.
That’s why none of the musicians are on stage showing how good he / she is at playing, but how well together they are able to tell the story to you.

Ten minutes, and time didn't feel that long at all! Most of the time, it feels like ‘Nightwish’s songs could be even longer. Although on average they are about 6-8 minutes long. The longest is a 31-minute orchestral work, the London Philharmonic Orchestra as musicians.

Welcome to the adventure. Night wish is a band that sounds better LIVE than studio versions.Yes, their studio albums are exceptional, but the live concerts really show just how great this band is. They get their energy from the audience. This 15 song concert is a prime example of that. No two songs are the same, and each song is equal or better than the last one. Glad you reacted to this. I really hope that we are evolving as a evolving as a reactor reactor to the reactors....... And what I mean by that is I am very happy to see that some people are finally praising someone by not trashing someone else....... And people are right but sometimes the comparisons are not apples to apples to apples and we all have to remember that singing and music is an art form and what 1 person thinks is art another person May think something differently so it's almost pointless to argue the subjective........ I think a lot of these singers are like professional Athletes Because they all bring a different skill set to the table....... And they are all masters of their craft in their own unique way and style. And who we choose to listen to is our own individual preferences. lol... Rock on!!!
I am a fellow American, and the same thoughts initially went through my head. Wow, 10 minutes, we Americans and our fast food and show me what you got, you have 3 minutes thinking. Once I started watching, damn this woman can sing, and with those heavy guitars and drums, Amy Lee or Evanescence. Just how our minds work after years of being deprived of real music and real singers. I liked and subbed my friend, and let me tell you, this woman and band are like nothing you ever heard before. Soon you will hear them with more normal 6 or 7 minute songs, and you will be like, that was great, just not long enough. You will also be like Amy who, and while I still like Amy and Evanescence, like comparing a steak, potato, and salad dinner to McDonalds. Gabriel Bardac, he is like the Nightwish Army's (which I consider myself now) unofficial greeter/messenger, take a couple minutes and read his suggestions/history, will serve you well if you take this wonderful journey, and I hope you do.

Good first NW reaction Alpha but word of advice, I wouldn't bring up Amy Lee/Evanescence when doing NW reactions as the Nightwish Army doesn't take too kindly to the comparison. Amy Lee is a very talented and skilled singer with a career to be proud of. But Floor is on another level. I don't blame him for bringing up the comparison, it's all he knows really as American, he's not introduced to this kind of music, from Europe. I blame the radio stations in the US. Plus, they typically mention Amy Lee at the start of GLS, when Floor hasn't shown more than about 23% of her potential.

Gabriel Bardoc has been here. The List(TM) he brings is recommended, though it is hard to go wrong with Nightwish. Oh My God are they GOOD! I discovered this band almost a year ago, and.. just mind blowing. Floor Jansen is the vocalist here, and she is our Valkyrie, our Viking Goddess of Song. OK "Army"..."Air Force" here! Thanks for a great post & reaction. I've been listening to this band since the beginning of the pandemic (lockdown, etc.) and am totally hooked. The genre is called Symphonic Metal. The vocalist's name is Floor Jansen (Yahn-sen). She is Dutch. The band is based in Finland. This song (GLS for short) is the 13th song in a 15 song setlist and Wacken (Vahken), Germany and is part of an open air festival. Every song within the setlist is worth listening to. I've been around a while (say over 60 years) and haven't ever heard a better live band. Be prepared to have your channel invaded by another Army...the Nightwish Army. You now heard some of the skills our 1.83m Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen has to offer as the third and present singer of Nightwish. She is the most versitale female singer of our time. Just wait when she gets in full Dutch Windmill mode with her hair. She added the ending herself and this song has become their anthem since. As I am a Flooraholic from Utrecht, The Netherlands, here is some background information on her. She joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. My favourite song is 'Energize Me'. Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also has some classical singing education, but not as much as you would expect when you hear her sing. 'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song, such as from full operatic to serious growls in seconds. The song 'Disdain' is a good example:

Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. The lyrics of the songs of Nightwish are very poetic and the music as a whole is very challenging, but Floor pulled it off and she stayed for the whole world tour, culminating is this iconic Wacken 2013 Open Air festival which set new standards in Open Air concerts. It was obvious that the match Nightwish and Floor was made in Walhalla, so she became a permanent member of the band as the relationship between Nightwish and Annette was strained even before she got ill. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp'for a couple of years, but it became clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. Another sol carried away by our Valkyrie goddess. Floor Jansen, pronounced Yan-sen, is the best female vocalist today. She can sing any genre, any style, from opera to growls.
