      Lol, I did consider prior to visiting that perhaps I should have a weapon of some sort... But, it's traveled pretty regularly by people who visit there to walk or ride their bikes, so I figured it'd be ok. Worse came to worse, I could speak softly and carry a big stick.

      @@inmytravels I like your style brother. There's a similar tunnel near my home called "The Road To Nowhere" filled with graffiti and dark as night until about midday. Was quite spooky the first time through, especially how a whisper can be heard from one end to the other, giving the illusion that someone is much closer than thay are.....

    You may notice that when I exit the first tunnel there are two people there... I stopped and we talked to each other for about 20 minutes, and their story was heartwarming.
    They live on separate sides of Pennsylvania (if you're unfamiliar with Pennsylvania, it is a very large state and to drive from one side to another can take around 5 or 6 hours). This couple love each other but for various reasons can't move to each others city; so, they meet in Breezewood to spend the day together every couple of weeks because it's an equal distance for them.
    They met that day to do some spray-painting, walk the tunnel, get some lunch, and then head home...
    I don't know about you, but I think that's very cool.

    There were seven tunnels on the turnpike altogether. Some, if not all, were old railroad tunnels. The original section of the PA TPK which opened in 1940, ran from Irwin on the west end to Carlisle on the eastern end. The two tunnels just east of Breezewood were abandoned when the new road over Sideling Hill was opened. The last time I went across the turnpike, Allegheny Tunnel, Kittatinny Tunnel, and Blue Mountain Tunnel were still in operation.

    The area above the tunnels are vent shafts where fresh air was pumped through to help flush out the exhaust from the vehicles passing through. From what I've been told, while you can go through the tunnels themselves the upper areas are off limits. The area is patrolled by the PA Department of Natural Resources Police and I understand you will get in trouble if caught in there.

    Are these places maintained? How is it nasty bugs, and other critters have not made it home. On the Delaware Water Gap by I-80 there is a small maintenance tunnel on the banks of the river. The ceiling has been occupied by these giant nasty insects that drop down on you when you shine a light on them.

    • @inmytravels
      @inmytravels  Рік тому

      I read somewhere that there is a group of folks that do some maintaining of that stretch of turnpike, mostly cutting trees that fall across the road. As far as critters, it’s interesting that I didn’t see anything at all… nothing, no bugs, no animals, no people residing there…
      Your guess is as good as mine!
      Check out my video called “down the rabbit hole”, which was shot at I think the place you’re referring to off 80 at the Delaware Gap… no bugs or animals there either, but a cool place to explore

      If you search "Abandoned PA Turnpike" (exactly) on Google Maps, it'll drop a pin where you can park; at the parking spot, there's a small but steep up hill road, walk up that and then you're on the turnpike road... Then, walk or bike about 1 mile down that road and you'll arrive at the tunnel. Easy-peasy :)
