    I have been using the Chladni visualization concept for over 20 years to tune the tops of hand-made acoustic guitars. Instead of sand we use black pepper! Before final assembly and gluing, the top of the guitar is placed on 4 small foam blocks with a speaker below and in the center. As the audio frequencies are increased the pepper patterns show how the sound will be projected off the top of the guitar. If there are problems (non-symmetry, weak patterns, etc.) the under side of the guitar top can be shaved thinner in places to improve sound projection. This helps to make really fine acoustic guitars!! This presentation is a great start to help all with the design of many types of sound system projects. Good job!

      I wonder how the standing waves would react with magic sand. Fine sand/black pepper is ideal for quick results and to show an approximated shape of the waves, but maybe it can be traded for a high viscosity sand, and longer length of time. Maybe the waves will force the sand to assume a 3d wave pattern that hasn't been seen yet? Maybe not. If you or a jobless friend has this set up already, could you try it out and upload the results 😁 please?

    I watch your videos quite frequently, and honestly I feel pretty bad for you guys lol. Some of the comments are rough as hell, and the hilarious part is most of the people leaving rude comments aren't even going to make the project, they just want to shred on your creativity.
    You guys do good work, you give me the courage to take on my own projects. Thanks for always being positive. :)

    You have been granted a very special boon by the Devine to create sound energy. Would love to see the 2 D sound vibration images of your work using a chladni plate and compare them to corresponding yantras. It has been done before with Buddhist monks recitals. Mind blowing.

    Wish I'd seen this 3 weeks ago. My daughter (7) used an old 12" subwoofer with an 11 .5" round cake pan taped (Gorilla tape) to the speaker and an online wave generator. We used 4 pieces of tape at the corners of the round pan. The shapes (in salt) were only about 60% as defined as some of your video. She did well in the science fair. Maybe next year, we'll improve. Thanks for the creative idea.
    The bonus of using the pan was being able to put some water or vegetable oil in it to see the effects. Be sure to use some plastic to cover the area surrounding the speaker.

    • @GoChrisGo_xyz
      @GoChrisGo_xyz 6 років тому

      True! It's all thanks to the predictable way waves do their thing. If you were to fill a square fish tank with water and wiggle your finger up and down in the middle, the waves there would produce a very similar pattern. Waves are waves, and as it turns out, waves are in everything we experience with our senses.

    Since I don’t want to ruin a good speaker, I could probably make a lighter weight one of these with some black paper-backed foam board cut into a square. That stuff rings slightly when tapped, and is so lightweight and strong that people have literally made model airplanes with it. I’m sure even a cheap speaker would get that resonating pretty good.

    • @GoChrisGo_xyz
      @GoChrisGo_xyz 6 років тому

      Yup! You could, but in practice, it won't look as cool. The patterns only show up when the plate vibrates at the specific frequencies that display standing waves. So for most music played through them, it'll just make the powder bounce with no discernible pattern. I do know that instrument makers use this to test out the vibrational qualities of violins and guitars to test of imperfections. It'd be cool to see how music looks through one of these though!

      I'm looking in comments for the same explanation. Only thing I can think of is to dampen the sound or air coming from the woofer so it doesn't interfere with sand patterns

    Hey gys cool video. i'm making a art project where i want to make patterns with plate with frequencies over 20kHz. My question is would this be possible?

  • @handsfreekvm
    @handsfreekvm 5 років тому

    Why does the cone need to be attached to the plate? If the outer four points are fixed, the acoustic vibration should still move the plate correct? Or will it move it at a function of the plates resonant frequency’s? If someone can answer this I will be grateful as I want to try this but not mess up my woofer.

    What Gauge of sheet metal should I use?

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti 6 років тому

      Don't really think it matters - thin but not too thin. Paper this is too thin.
      The thickness (or rather, stiffness) of the plate is part of what determines the resonant frequencies, which determines the patterns.

      You can use any plate that is likely to resonate. You can tell if it will resonate by tapping it and see if it rings. If instead it just makes a "thud" sound, probably not so effective for this purpose.

      It doesn't have to be lexan. It just serves as a guide for the bolt so that the rod doesn't waste energy by wiggling at any other angle than perfectly straight up and down.
