Just so you know, if your book falls apart again reach out to wizards support! Send them some pictures of the damage and give them the info they ask for and they'll send you a replacement! My old players handbook fell apart awhile ago with the same issue of pages just falling out and they sent me a brand new one! Didn't even ask for the old one back. So I have a nice one and one that I try to not loose any pages of!

    • @BlackMagicCraftOfficial
      @BlackMagicCraftOfficial  5 років тому +2

@Knight Oezaxs Yea, I've actually already done that for both my PH and MM. They will replace any first printing because of a known glue binding issue. They never made me send them in, just photos, so I still have my damaged copies as backups that I let get beaten up in backpacks and whatnot. I've already repaired them a few times with contact cement, and those repairs have all held well. This is a new chunk that had fallen out and I figured why not try hot glue while I was doing this.

@@DragonsBane78 I'm not sure if the link will post or not, but if it doesn't: Google "replacing 5e players handbook" and look for the webpage where Wizards explains the process. It'll basically boil down to you taking pictures and e-mailing them with an explanation of what's happening and your shipping info. When they've got everything confirmed, they'll send you a confirmation e-mail with shipping information for a new players handbook.

That photo of DM Scotty kissing his hot glue gun really made me flinch; burnt lips and glued hair :O
The spell effects are really great. The Fireball effect got me thinking that you could use ascertone to melt out the foam ball, leaving the hot glue as a dome. You could then place the flame effect over an electric tealight.

I learned the hard way: The reason he uses parchment paper and not wax paper for the first two spell effects is that hot glue binds VERY well to wax paper. You can pull the wax paper off the back, but you'll be picking it out from between the edges. This technique worked REALLY well for me, except for where I failed to follow instructions. Great video.

I dont know if you would use this tip very often but I figured I would share when I saw you having trouble getting the label off the coke bottle. I home brew beer and hate buying bottles so I repurpose ones whenever I can. Getting the label off can be a pain and I found that using a brewing cleanser called B-Brite is great for removing labels. The best method I have come across is to put the bottles in the dishwasher and use the B-Brite instead of your usual detergent. The hot water along with the cleanser dissolves most glues and the labels fall off with little to no scraping.
You probably wouldnt use it on bottles very often for your craft but it may come in handy for removing decals off plastic toys that you want to repurpose.

    • @artecko
      @artecko 5 років тому +3

Lighter fluid (like Zippo) is also amazing at getting glue residue and labels off. It dissolves the glue no problem. And after you're done cleaning, it will evaporate, leaving no smell or extra flammability.

Acetone also works, though is fumey. You can get it very very cheap from a hardware store, or a bit more expensive/lower quality as nail polish remover. Acetone-free nail polish remover exists because the acetone would dissolve the adhesive of false nails. Isopropyl alcohol works too, but it's a lot milder and takes longer.

I think I am going to combine two of your techniques to make my own Cloud of Daggers, but I am going to make some translucent tentacles like you did for Evard's Black Tentacles to hold them. I may have to also steal the technique you showed us in a previous video and use some UV resign to cast a bunch of daggers.
Thanks! I've got my work cut out for me.

  • @rocketforthree4479

Amazing ideas and builds! One thing I think might give the Black Tentacles an even better look would be a little dark purple dry brush or wash to give it a bit of variation and shading.
Also if you want to remove labels from bottles, try submerging the bottle in a tub of water and letting it soak for a few hours to overnight. I've done this many times with glass bottles, and I believe it should work for plastic as well.
    Keep being awesome!

I love all your ideas that give me ideas as well, enjoy watching your videos.
The Cloud of Daggers is actually a 2 inch square. It creates a 5 ft cube from each side from center of origin so that would make it a 2 inch square, and not just a 1 inch cube.
And your Magic Circle to prevent the soda bottle from warping to much just do it in small sections at a time and allowing it to cool before doing the next section, working 2 or 3 inches at a time. That way it prevents it from warping as much or use the smaller of the two since the smaller one doesnt get as hot as the bigger hot glue gun does. Especially if you dont have these special temperature control type of guns.

The ONLY downside to hot-glue repairing a book is if it is an old and rare book, you have chopped its value to a tiny fraction of what it was when falling apart.

What are your thoughts on encapsulating your painted miniatures in clear resin to preserve their paint jobs and shapes? I tend to make characters that can fly so it's kinda been a thought in my mind to suspend them in a 1x1x*insert height*inch dome or rectangular cube (like a beauty and the beast rose). From there I imagined that I could then just carry my painted pieces in a dice bag and not have to worry about their paint being dinged up from actually playing with them. We tend to knock the pieces over as they become unconscious or swipe everything off the board to clear it and rewdraw the map....

Great video and what a coincidence! I actually made myself an entangle recently in almost the same fashion, though I only painted mine. I really like the flocking though, I'll have to try that on the next one. Hotglue spell effects are the jam, lol. My groups most used spell seems to be moonbeam, so I also made a 1" diameter hot glue circle and teased the edges while it was still hot to give it texture. I then painted the bottom white and the top with a semi-translucent irridecent pearl paint. It's been a hit with our Druids and having a guide on the table can really help a DM judge just who is within range. ;)

Those Spell Effects are great ! The flaming sphere is absolutely amazing and i think i´m gonna give it a shot for the games we play.
Have you considered making more spell effects for other popular spells ?
I would really like to see how darkness, fog cloud, a wall of fire, a wall of force, a wall of light or a force cage would be made with these techniques.
Thank you again for this video and maybe your consideration for doing another video (and perhaps with the suggested spells ^^ ).

Tip for removing labels: mix some baking soda and cooking oil together and slather it all over whatever you're trying to remove. Let sit for a few minutes then attack it with an abrasive brush.

Awesome work, sir! Great to see techniques like this. I've found from painting hot glue created stuff you need to thin the shit out of the paint. Best results are from washes and inks - I think Citadel Hexwraith Flame would have looked great on your green wall thingie.

Great to also see the one that went bad (and looks more like the lvl 1.41 spell "EldritchMegaCabbage") --- the aim of showing what happens works regardless, and we had a glimpse of how great it would look if kept transparent (after removing the label goo with heavy duty wipes). Overusing hot glue here for didactic/thematic purpose is fine; your viewers are smart enough to use CA where useful.

If you had some 4 inch bases you could've used them to keep the Magic Circle more circular while applying the hot glue.

You could totally make a black pudding with that black glue gun. I never had a D&D book fall apart like yours.

A soak in hot water or some Goo Gone would help the label issue. I find small bottles of Goo Gone at the dollar store. It worked out though. Very cool stuff to try out.

If you have an issue separating hot glue from anything, use rubbing alcohol it will release it without any ripping.

Hi I don't know what country you're in but in the UK we use petrol lighter fluid or "Zippo" lighter fluid, buy the fluid and rub it on any surface to remove sticky labels works perfect every time and will not damage any surface including fabric

Dude....Love the vid. Didn't know there was black hot glue sticks....WHAAAAAAAT!!!??
Was hoping I'd see you do one of my crafty tricks with hot glue. Whenever someone does a detect magic, I bust out my black light and shine it on my scene and hidden bits of glue are illuminated to reveal paths, messages, incantations, etc.
Regular hot glue glows rather well under black light....just can't paint it or the light won't effect it.

Very cool. And I like that most of the spell effects are easily translated or altered for other game systems. what about status markers of some kind that have a base that sits under the fig but has an effect coming out one side like fire or poison cloud or whatever? Just a thought. Love the Surebonder. Is absolutely the pinnacle of Hot Glue guns. Got mine when Scotty recommended them.

I've thought a lot about condition makers over the years and have never been able to come up with a craftable solution. It's really one of those things better suited to design digitally and 3d print.

@@BlackMagicCraftOfficial I have made some rings using shrinky dink plastic for status markers but I think they could be done neater than that. You are likely right about the 3d printing, but I do not honestly know when/if I will ever have one of those to play around with. Thanks again for the vid and the ideas.

There are some companies selling them I believe if you wanna get your hands on something clean and well executed. Just simple rings with the text embossed on them. I can't think of companies off hand because it's just independant people printing them for sale. Etsy sort of thing.

I stole an idea from Matt Mercer and use different colored plastic rings that fit around the characters to represent different (visible to others) effects like bleeding, stunned, on fire, etc. The rings are from things like milk and sports drinks (Gatorade is great for the color variety). The larger ones from jars of peanuts work for 5' radius effects, and now I know that 2-liter bottles will make 10' radius effects, I will sacrifice a few nickel deposits for game markers.

Use alcohol or IPA to remove hot glue from the glass.
As soon as it flows between the glass and the glue, it almost falls down by itself.
Works with almost all surfaces as long as it does not melt the surface

This was great! I've attempted some hot glue molding, but it always has sketchy results. these look like stellar ideas. I'm going to be making multiple of those fireballs. those would be useful in multiple miniatures games and, of course, DnD.
Edit: This would be a great way to make oil slicks and such for Gaslands as well!
