Yes there seems to be a fair bit of misplaced (pride?) regarding this build. Engine tidiness and tune comments that expose a lack of knowledge in general regarding the subject matter, not just this particular machine. All together a very pretty aircraft just the same.
I discovered this airplane in a hangar at Manching airport while visiting my friend Horst Philipp, near Ingolstadt, in August 2015. Some years later I received some images of the engine being torn down, taken by Uwe Glaser, who was close with Dirk Abende. He explained to me, with the many photos, the faults discovered upon initial engine runs. This Emil is a good example of the restorers art, probably the best detail and finish of any 109 yet.
I went to an old battered shack of a Museum in Harlingen, Texas by memory in the 1990s. A brit on a young family weekend away from the Oilfields. I came across two FW190 Airframes and maybe their engines on the ground. You probably know more than me. I am sure they are now air worthy.
@@eamo106 The Texas Air Museum rebuilt four Fw-190s from wrecks although not to a very high standard. Immaculate! Thank you for sharing this mechanical work of art. I often wonder if the DB engines can perform better using modern fuels and lubricants, as this was a limiting factor during the war.
Forced induction and water injection can compensate for lower octane fuels. It’s still true today. Water methanol injection on my 2022 ford ranger lets me have the full 320 horse boost upgrade but run lower octane fuels. Without water methanol injection? Not sure how long it would have lasted. With 93 or 94 octane fuel? I can turn the boost up higher but it runs fine using water methanol to compensate for the 87 octane cheap gas I can find everywhere
Same could be said for Russian planes communism wasn’t much better as an ideology either ..it murdered quite a lot more people that didn’t agree with it too ..
Absolutely GORGEOUS work!!! Fantastic restoration, bravo!! Now if someone could do a similar restoration on a 109-K4... There's a few G2's, G6's and a G10 or two, but no K4's. Heard there was a long term K4 project going on somewhere, but no recent news of it.
+@WHJeffB I think there are two K-4 projects but neither one of them are airworthy that I'm aware of. I don't think there are many DB-605D engines around.
Probably was upgraded to E-7 for the eastern front. I suspect the larger expanse of territory they had to fly over required the fitting of a long range fuel tank and larger oil tank. So technically yes it was probably built as a BF-109E-4 but was probably upgraded to a BF-109E-7 prior to being sent over. Excellent job on a very unique aero engine. DB-600 series inverted V-12s are very hard to come by anymore.
Beautiful machine ... my first and only Cox powered model airplane was a BF-109 .. it cut my dad's finger on start-up and then I crashed it. It was a cold winter day.
I love the comments below, and just would like to add how a simple well designed casting replaced all the labour intensive welded frame of the British fighters? Never mind the ergonometric use of the inverted "V".
Yes, it is a centrifugal supercharger, in fact you can see the art of the supercharger behind the air inlet but in these versions with that inlet it is not seen well, it is seen better (because it is exposed) in the later versions with circular inlet
Classic 'Stone Crusher' the DB,s and Jumos distinctive plodding beat that instilled terror to those cowering in Londons Tube Stations at the height of the Blitz . In contrast Rollers Merlin sounds angry snarly , like a cat whose tail is caught in a door.
What makes it so quiet? Its almost like all you can hear are the mechanical noises from the engine, the supercharger, but barely any exhaust noise. Whereas the mustang is really all exhaust noise
That is the difference between a good quality engine, tuned perfectly by someone who knows what he does and using high quality fuel. This plane gets taken care of. While such Mustangs you talk about are mostly cheaply restored for a museum. No heart in it, no sweat, no blood. Just so it runs barely for visitors to see and hook them. Engine badly tuned, probably even with some defects they did not care about and so on.
@@dom3827 I would rather hear the engine as it was during the times when it was used rather than an impossibly maintained and tuned one with fuel that the germans couldn't even dream off back then, it would only further increase the "german perfection" myth.

It has a heavy fly wheel with a clutch to engage the engine. There are videos of German Fighters where the starter is hand cranked if battery power for the starter is not available. In either case the fly wheel is spun up to a speed where it will turnover the engine fast enough to start.
