      I currently have a sg300 24 port switch and about to swap it out with a sg500 52p full poe switch for my home, great switches for a home core switch, but would prefer having a 1000 series switch so I could have full ios, not to mention updating the sg series is a little bit a pain in the butt, great video David and thank you for all you do.

    Tip from the good ol' days of DOS:
    10:14 - Mr Bombal, there is another, faster way to get the serial ports without using the "Device Manager".
    In Windows systems, back in the day, we use the command 'mode' in DOS to see which serial ports were available.
    All Windows systems have the command 'mode' built-in. You just need to open either a CMD or PowerShell window, type 'mode' (without quotes) and press ENTER.
    You will always get a "CON" device, which is the CONSOLE, and then the serial ports available with a name like 'COM1' or 'COM15'.
    Thanks for the video. As always, bringing and sharing great content.

    since i am a beginner (preparing of my ccna), i'd love to see differences between cisco's STP (PVST+) and regular STP, it would be nice if you manipulate the root bridge and root ports, also if you can pls include how dangerous layer 2 loops can be
    More Cisco!

    I still call these Linksys switches.
    Maybe comparing things like pps, queues, memory, diff between cpu and asic based switches could make for interesting content.
    There is a huge difference in (maximum potential) performance between for example an SG350 and C9300 even though they both have 1Gbit ports on the outside

    • @tianhangqiang5519
      @tianhangqiang5519 Рік тому

      Also big difference on the price, the cbs350 with 48 GE and 4*10G unlink cost around $1500 usd, while c9300 with same configuration would be $7000 to $10,000 depends on your license.

    Looks like this will be a good series! I come from many years in working on enterprise products from Cisco, but never looked at their small business offerings and use UniFi products at home. I'm interested in seeing how much one can do with their small business products. The fact that Cisco had switches available for less than $500 blew my mind there...

    • @davidbombal
      @davidbombal  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you. Which features on UniFi do you really like and want me to test as part of this series?

    • @gwgux
      @gwgux 3 роки тому +2

      @@davidbombal Honestly, I only went UniFi because of their web interface and the price and they had a good base feature set with VLAN support, PoE, QOS, etc. Since you've already debunked the price myth, I'm looking forward to seeing if Cisco does web interfaces better on their small business network products since they've yet to convince me they can do it well enough on their enterprise products.
      At home, I want a break from having to rely on a command line for everything so seeing how the web interfaces work as well as the mobile app you mentioned will be very interesting to me.

  • @GregInHouston2
    @GregInHouston2 3 роки тому

    This is useful. I love the way you sidestepped the question of how expensive Cisco switches are! You compared the cost on Cisco's website (MSRP) with the cost on Amazon instead of other brands. So I'll do it for you! I'm showing a CBS110-8T-D is exactly $70.00 and a NetGear GS308 is $19.99. I only looked up NetGear because I am familiar with that brand.
    Another problem that I have faced recently is with a Cisco 4400 Series WLC that someone purchased used alone with 20 Cisco access points. After setting the whole thing up, the access points would not register with the WLC. After hours of reviewing debug data from both devices, watching videos and other sources, I had to give up. I had a friend with CCNA credentials look into it. The certificate on the WLC is expired! It took him a while to figure that one out. At no point, did the Cisco WLC show me any error message indicating the certificate was expired. The only way I can find to deal with the problem is to set the **** thing with an incorrect date.
    I cannot speak to how long Cisco will last versus my Netgear equipment because my oldest device is only around 10 years old. Before that, I used LinkSys. I loved my RV082! It was a solid performer. And then Cisco bought LinkSys. There were no problems until I updated the firmware to Cisco branded firmware. With each update, my equipment became more and more unstable.
    As with most devices these days, it does not ask for a new password; it demands it! I have issues with that!
    As I said, this is useful. I look forward to other videos in this series.

    Cisco uses products like this ones which are fairly good for the medium business to bring you in their echosystem, the problem is when you switch to enterprise, prices increase exponentially and switching to other brands requires to remake the entire architecture and retrain the entire IT department. Beware of this traps people, I had to deal with this for my company.

    More and more tempted to look at this and Aruba instant on products over Unifi. Unifi there is always something breaking, today it’s the non replacement battery in the cloud key gen 2. £200 for two years and you can’t replace the battery. Seriously..!!!
    Yes I can build a new controller on a VM, but Unifi kit really is disposable..

    Most of the SMB equipment is OEM'ed by companies bought by Cisco (like Linksys and Meraki and what not).
    Then they adapted the IOS / CatOS to these foreign boxes. And not always it passed without bugs and performance issues.
    Does it have the great bridge logo? Yes. Does it feel like real Cisco in the everyday work? Well, not all of it 🤷🏻‍♂️
    Though I did buy it for the companies I worked in.

    -Great content Professor David.
    -Perfect the teacher's analysis, but it is based on the reality of you who buy Amazon and receive the product at home without any customs fee, but this is not my reality.
    -We have to take into account that the economic reality in much of the world is different from what it is in the USA or Europe, so when we talk about home networking or small business we have to take into account that a new Cisco product here in my country it is very expensive, which makes it unfeasible for domestic use or for small businesses, because for these markets there are vendors that have niched themselves in these markets such as Microtik and other companies such as TPLink and others that are not smaller (because they sell and profit very similar to that of large companies) but focused on this market.
    -See I'm a Cisco fan boy after all I'm CCNA certified and I'll make it to the CCIE someday, but what makes Cisco spectacular is the technology of both the hardware (which is very good and durable) and the Cisco software.
    -So when they make a product without the IOS as a Switch that is not managed (without the IOS that was possibly removed to lower the price), it eliminates half of the advantage and makes us question whether the hardware of the ports that is what is left is still of the same quality as the larger Cisco equipment.
    -And as I said, in this smaller niche, a number of companies sell equipment at the same price as the one the professor showed, but they have VLAN administration with their own systems.
    -In fact even a Tplink router running OpenWRT (Linux) and can configure BGP, OSPF, Vlans etc.
    -So if Cisco wants to go down to the level of this class of network devices, just compete with open software people they no longer win and in fact Cisco is making mistakes the way I saw it even in the simplified OS because the people of Open it would make even the standard Cisco commands work even with simpler hardware, so I didn't really like what I saw technically speaking.
    -By the way, Cisco could be a leader in industrial IoT if it worked with Open communication protocols that Chinese device manufacturers would make compatible hardware, but everything I've seen from Cisco to IoT is pretty closed so they end up missing this train and will end up becoming a Microsoft (locked in on itself having to reinvent itself in various markets) that's what I see from here.
    -See if you compare Cisco and Juniper (I'm certified in both) Juniper's Junos already has a CLI it's better than IOS, but adding to Cisco technologies such as Cisco proprietary protocols and SDWan and SDN server ai a Cisco wins cool.
    -Cisco in this class of Devices they sacrifice the Software, which is half the advantage they take to the others, only the hardware left but even then they lowered the spec to lower the price
    -The advantage of buying a Cisco Device in this case is the same as buying a more expensive IPhone, with the phonephone chines with cheaper capacity on the side (The only advantage is the Vendor Name) and that for a technical person like my case It does not justify.
    -The world is a mess right now in the pandemic so we'll have to wait to pass the situation pass to really see the future more clear.
    -Thanks for the knowledge...!!!

    Cisco is insanely expensive compared to alternative products, considering the main objective of their products is to push around packets fast following standards available on every switch and router on the market, I feel that their success is more of a marketing campaigns like this video rather than actual value for the price.

      Great suggestion. Be careful with that device as the CLI is different to full Cisco IOS. I suggest you download Cisco Packet Tracer (free software) so you can build a whole network on your computer (simulation). Great software for learning.

    Thank you David for your explanation. I like to see how DHCP works, when we have 2 PCs connected to a switch but different VLANs. The switch is connected to a router and then the router should send DHCP DORA to a Windows server machine with a DHCP server. Where there are 2 different scopes.
    I actually want to se how to configure the router. Do we need VRFs? In such a case should we use virtual interfaces or physical interfaces (router).

    😂😂😂😂 yeah, they have a whole range of products for you to spend your hard earned dollars on. Then, when you try to get some minor technical support, it becomes very clear what they think of you and your business.
    I tried building my network with cisco based on this video and videos like it. Well, never again. Cisco will not get one dime from me in the future, and I'll take these videos with a grain of salt.
    Lesson learned.

      @@davidbombala few ideas off the top of my head are:
      - Understanding the differences between Cisco's product line up (and even naming scheme, but I understand if that's perhaps too detailed for most people);
      - How to scope the ideal gear and how to decide between the specific models between them;
      As the series progresses, I'm sure there will be more interesting suggestions from us all. :) Thanks for asking David.

    FWIW, I have a Cisco 8 port SG200 managed switch on my home network, along with pfsense for my router/firewall and Unifi access point. I went this route because I wanted a bit better than consumer grade gear. I also have a Cisco 2600 series router, which I used to study for my CCNA.
    BTW, I have a lot of experience with Adtran, as I used to work for their Canadian distributor. Their AOS is pretty much a clone of Cisco's IOS.
