Stahl was a Lutheran political theorist who addressed important questions about Christians and their relationship to the state, as well as questions about how God's law relates to the positive law to be enforced by human governments.

    Regarding a breakdown in the social order. Stahl makes an interesting point. In effect, I cannot alienate myself from my own rights. The example of no-fault divorce illustrates this well, I think.

    This is fascinating stuff. I'm Reformed, but I've not really seen many modern treatments out there dedicated to political thought (other than theonomy, which I don't agree with) that's committed to Scripture and an explicitly Christian approach. Really appreciate your work here, Dr. Cooper!

    Maybe it's too far afield, but if you are aware of any Lutheran contributions to aesthetics or philosophy of art, that'd be great.

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness." Doesn't this mean rights come from God?

      It’s not the same conception of God as Christians. When they speak of god they are speaking from a deistic point of view.

    I also think you re mixing the ideals of the American Revolution with those of the French Revolution. In the former, as cited below, rights are endowed by our Creator, in the French revolution they are like what you describe: rights that inhere in us for being human. The American Revolution is Burkean, in a way, and the French Rousseauian. The Enlightenment in England was different from that in France.

      @@pete3397 going off of the Oxford definition: a moral or legal entitlement to have or obtain something or to act in a certain way. How can we be entitled to something by God is everything we get from God is grace alone? Grace alone implies I don’t deserve it but rights imply that I do.

      @@paulc1391 Got you. This gets into the idea of liberty which is not just freedom, but freedom with responsibility. We have God-given rights and it is our duty to respect and protect those rights in others. This is the essence of the Law which is "love your neighbor" and "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Grace, is the unmerited favor God bestows upon a fallen humanity. It is the tension that Luther describes when he says, "A Christian is an utterly free man, lord of all, subject to none. A Christian is an utterly dutiful man, servant of all, subject to all." Because Christ has loved us and given us His grace, we can then love our neighbors and exercise our God-given rights.
