Thank you for the video. This has been my struggle for years. Stores around here seem to only provide women with moomoos or pyjamas with cartoon characters and slogans like "sleepy head". I have to order my sleepwear online. How I dress at home really affects my attitude and posture. If I hang around in worn and stained clothes, I don't feel particularly attractive or seem to accomplish anything productive that day.

I had to comment for two reasons - this afternoon, on a tiny country back lane I found a community library. I always stop, being a book lover, and there, in all their glory, were over 20 'Victoria' magazines from 1989-1997!!! I asked the lady at the small community store if I could borrow them and she told me to take them all - no one wanted to read them! Oh my beating heart. Sadly, I am in Australia, so a long way off, but I did covet a Janet Reger nightgown. I just felt that I had to share with fellow connoisseurs.

Hi Jennifer - I've never been one for rag-tag or sloppy sleepwear, but I did just order new flannel pajamas from Amazon, thanks to your encouragement! My present pajamas are getting a bit worn, but I keep them in good repair and iron them after washing. It helps to slightly lengthen the sleeves and legs for my long limbs and at least they look nice the first time I put them on after washing! I’ve been slowly curating a collection of pretty feminine sleepwear. I love wearing chemise night gowns with a robe and silky satin pj sets. I feel a lot more put together and pretty even when having a lazy day at home!
@Ilovecerealcerealcereal Imo, it's no different than middle-aged and older people liking and collecting I Love Lucy, Coke, etc items. If you like it, who cares?? And if anyone judges you for it, well, says more about them than it does you...
So much to think about. As a homemaker having nice pajamas is really quite splendid because we don't just wear them only when sleeping, sometimes I make breakfast on a Saturday in them, or read a book before bed in them. I spend half my life really in pajamas! Still, I tend to think if you only have so much to spend I would rather spend it on new pajamas for my kids in organic cotton. :) I think what the clothes are made of matters more than how pretty they are, you know like people. ;). And with finite resources I really enjoy giving good things to my kids more than myself. It's fine to look pretty as long as I spend more time arranging my spirit than arranging my appearance.
I always try to look presentable both in, and out, of the house, but your video has made me want to step up my game in the sleepwear department! All the pieces you have shown here are just beautiful. Your family is so lucky to have you as their mama..... you are such a great role model. Thank you for all you do for us, Jennifer.
I was raised by folks that lived thru depression...and difficult economic times...so getting rid of anything that is not falling apart is difficult message to change. I still always kept a few pair of new undies. But over past year things have gotten shabby. Finding bathrobes that suit me is the hardest to find as I like button down robes. So doing some online shopping and will then throw away some things....I hope. So thanks for the message .
Susan, if it’s any help I do recall LL Bean makes a cozy zipper-closure robe. It’s not as formal as these but modest and long all the same. They have great sales this time of year too. As for the undies, there are cotton and textile recycling centers you can take/ship them too, after removing the elastic, etc. They make the fabrics into insulation that can then be used in homes and businesses. I recently learned of a brand called Knickey that sells organic cotton undies while also promoting cotton recycling once they’re done for.
Interestingly enough, I had *just* ordered 2 long nighties and a dressing gown from April Cornell (for we flower children of the 60's, she checks all the boxes!)...and I am eagerly anticipating draping myself over the furniture in elegant, beautiful, slightly Edwardian sleepwear during the autumn and winter. I knew I'd found my style when I turned the catalog page and literally gasped. Thanks for once again confirming for your audience the importance of taking good care of our feminine souls. I loved this video!! Thanks, dear Jennifer.
I’m so glad you mentioned this retailer, @Karen Noske! I bopped over to their site and yes, as a fellow child of the 1960’s I love the style. I don’t feel comfortable in jeans and hardly wear them any longer, I prefer dresses and skirts. I ordered several of her dresses and nightgowns. I love that they are feminine and modest, meaning not showing too much. Thanks!
As a child of the 80s, I spotted some things on their site that I may try. I’m mostly sold on the fact that they offer 100% cotton! Tip: I found pajama shorts and pants (cropped) in the underpinnings section (versus the pajamas section).
Well, I can understand a few of the points, but I think it is somehow wastefull to sort things out like you did... the things were fine, just a little pilled and discoloured, nothing bad or too shabby...🙁
I think mending is a very important art, that's been lost in the last few decades. Most of those clothes just needed to be freshened up, not thrown away.
I agree. Practical, well-kept clothes are fine in my book. For special occasions, or a special treat for yourself? Sure, go wild. But for sleeping day in and day out? Sweatpants and a t-shirt. Not everything needs to be fancy. That's expensive af.
It's so funny this came up in my recommended! Im a newly wed and my mother and law actually took me nice pj shopping as a treat, a few years ago I would have thought it would be a waste of money but I really love it now! It's so nice to wake up feeling cute and makes getting into bed nice too! I totally recommend! Love the video ♥️♥️♥️
My sister-in-law and I were just discussing this yesterday 😂 I don’t have the means to switch all my sleepwear right away, but it’s something I plan to start doing over the next couple years whenever something needs to be replaced
This is sooo cute. I love it. 🥰 Thank you it’s beautiful and classy. Also tip: I air dry my nicest clothes because they last longer that way. The lint you pull out of your machine dryer is from the clothes, slowly breaking down!
Yes! I hang ALL of our laundry to dry. Even towels. Sure, they're not AS soft and fluffy that way, but that's OK. Edit: And yes, this includes during winter.
UA-cam just recommended this video to me, and I was super intrigued without having any idea you wrote Lessons from Madame Chic! I read it two years ago and I still think about it all the time. So glad to find your channel!
I thinks this is the mark of a truly classy lady. I used to wear tee shirts to bed but after getting married I chose actual night gowns. As I got older and started getting hot at night, I switched to silk sets. My go to is silk cami and matching pants. The pants are the most wonderful thing because they never get twisted as I toss and turn. Thanks for this video. I think a lot of women have no idea what they are missing. 11:39
Well, you never know when house fire happens, or neighborhood fire that has you evacuating, medical emergency and no time to dress or cannot dress, natural disasters. That will be reason enough to at least be covered from shoulders to knees.
@@holyexperience1976 To be frank, in the event of any one of those things happening....I'm not much going to care if I fly out of the house buck nekked. I guess I'm just not modest in a crisis. 😬
I moved into the Spanish mountains some years back, find it impossible these days, to find a really warm, beautiful dressing gown so find myself looking at vintage. The Spanish houses have no central heating and indoor temps can be 5 degrees during mid winter months. Browsing the net, everything seems geared to warm houses. In the UK I had a beautiful Janet Raeger, deep red velvet on the outside, lined with a soft cotton toweling and slight padding with a large hood..was perfect..so perfect was worn to death...have seen nothing like it since!
My mother lives in Spain and buys fleece style pyjamas. There’s a company called Massana which sells pyjamas. I have a pair of velour pyjamas for winter that are really nice and cosy. I actually live in England but we have the heating off at night so I like to wear cosy pyjamas. Here’s an example from Massana. It’s not “elegant” looking like what Jennifer is showing but they’re presentable and cosy www.massana.es/es/mujer/pijama-de-mujer/conjuntos-de-pijama-para-mujer/pijama-mujer-invierno-P701204.html
When you said, 'but first you have to declutter the sleepwear you already own' i literally don't own a single piece of sleepwear 😂 definitely going to take some inspiration from this video!
In the day of work from home and getting calls at the door, it is important…now more than ever, to look decent while at home. What a blessing to live in a country that we can even have this as a topic of conversation. Prayers for all those who are marginalized by oppresive regimes, or are war torn or impoverished with no hope for betterment. 🙏🏻
I just watched your sleepwear video and it hit home! Even though it’s now 11:30 pm I just went to my closet and I cleaned out my sleepwear shelves and I put everything not up to standard, into a bag to be tossed tomorrow! It feels so good. I’ve only kept the things that are newer and nicer and aren’t torn! About half of what I had, is now ready to go out in the morning. I’m going to go online now and choose a few things to order that reflect how I feel about sleepwear and loungewear now. Thank you for such a wonderful thing to call attention to. I live alone ( with my pets) but I like to feel good about myself and this is a fun and important way to make us feel good about ourselves. Many thanks for this!❤️
Thank you for this video! You inspired me to go through my very old and worn drawers. I got rid of anything I couldn't repair and donated what didn't match. Macy's had a huge blowout clearance and I bought 4 complete jammy sets for 20$! I always thought pretty jammies had to be lingerie. Thanks for the inspiration! My husband also approves 😊
Thank you for the video! I just pulled out a vintage sleeping gown and matching robe that belonged to my grandmother. Feels magical. It also came with matching fluffy heels...they don't fit, but I will display them next to my makeup vanity.
The jogger trimmed with silk!!!! And that robe! I’m sprinted to update my sleepwear as all mine is tattered. We are doing homeschool next year so I really want to look presentable if I choose not to get dressed!!! I invest in my children’s sleep wear why not myself???? Thank you!!! Maybe a Best undergarments lined sleep bra’s to go under them to be presentable with boys!!!!
I totally agree with you on the fact to look always presentable. At the moment I wear my hubbies t-shirts to sleep in. But I don't like it, as I only wear dresses I would also like to look presentable when I get up in my sleepwear. So I luckily found a very small manufacturer online in Scotland, that sews and sell 1940s reproduction dresses. I send them a photo of a 1940s silk nightgown and YEAH they are willing to sew one for me. I am so happy and I can't wait to get it.
Since I started collecting vintage, I started collecting vintage loungewear and lingerie. Its pretty cheap to find and looks great. One of my favorite concepts of the past are dressing gowns. I have 2 silk ones from the 1930s and 40s . Dressing gowns are neither streetwear or sleepwear, something beautiful yet comfortable to put on if you have a guest, for example maybe a good friend over for a drink after you get off work or don’t want to be in your pajamas but its not something you wear outside. I think thats perfect! They look glamorous while being comfortable and you can just wear them over a slip and usually just have a zipper down the front. I have been very depressed the past week but I still wear my 1960s-70s lounge pieces and a little better.
All stunning pieces and I agree with some of your sentiments like dressing in a dignified way and having self respect. However I see there could be potential consequences like justifying selfish extravagance or being wasteful and unsustainable. I’m not suggesting this is your intention but it is a danger the message could be heard as always deserving the best of everything all the time. We live in a very disposable world. Every time I remove an item I have to consider is it still “good enough” for someone else if it’s not “good enough” for me 🤔 and am I just contributing to landfill when often items can be mended or de-pilled.
Yes, I definitely struggle with that too. My solution so far is to replace when worn out for high quality, well made pieces that will last, like cotton nightgowns over polyester that will sag and pill.
Interesting but could you advise what cut and fabric ? Because I find the inexpensive polyester dresses that flow over during summer not good for protecting from body over. And during sleep time our body usually sweat.
I love wearing fresh nightwear in fact just opened a new set more appropriate to the winter season we are going into. I used to wear nice fluffy slippers but as I have grown older switched to a comfortable soft memory foam indoor shoe which is safer for me..
Jennifer I really liked your books and your channel. When I was in college most girls wore pretty night gowns. This was in the late 70s and 80s to give you a reference. People did not wear short and t shirts to bed . Nor did we wear tshirts and jeans to school. To me it’s a shame how the style of dress was become so crummy in the US. My parents never wore jeans even on a ranch. Father wore suits and ties.I am so glad you promote wearing nice clothes all the time.
Thank you for this video, Jennifer. I’m a long time reader and subscriber, but just recently decided to fully commit to a 10-item (ish) wardrobe. Sleepwear and under garments are the last I need to declutter and evaluate, so this is very timely. I appreciate all of the work you’ve done, always but especially recently, to offer us detailed product information and work with brands for special discounts. It really helps and your extra effort is truly appreciated!
What beautiful pieces! As a petite women I find it difficult to find good fitting nightwear. Sleeves too long, shoulders hanging off, pants too long, etc. I’ve taken to sewing my own. There are wonderful patterns and fabrics out there and many of what you’ve shown are easy to duplicate for a fraction of the cost. My personal favorite is a beautiful cotton modal or bamboo. I never did get on the oversized t-shirt / pajama pants thing.
I wear Jockey. Oh my god! I have so many pajama sets. They feel like heaven. I did buy the silk $300 set at Tommy John’s. I visit the sites regularly and just look at the sales. You can find underwear for $1.99 This is the time of year to be watching for deals!
I have always worn pretty nighties to bed and now I can't imagine not. I live in the cold north and I still like a silk or silk-like nightie to sleep in -- just throw another blanket on the bed! I do need a new robe or dressing gown and I love the stunning burgundy one you sported here today. Thanks for the inspiration, Jennifer.
Thank you for this video Jennifer, I never thought about sleepwear that way, but those looked so so cozy, I think I will treat myself today! Love Steph
You've inspired me to throw away all my trash sleepwear and stock up on new, pretty, yet comfortable and modest sleepwear. My 41st birthday is coming up, so that's my present to myself. Can't wait to throw away the seriously ugly stuff I sleep in. Holy moly.
I'm glad I saw this... I don't feel so bad about all the satin pajama sets I just bought. Living alone it seems unnecessary but it's good to feel collected.
Hi Jennifer. I enjoyed this video very much. My favourite is the gold kimono gown. Although everything is gorgeous. And don't be embarrassed about old videos. It shows how you've grown into the youtuber you now are. It's a good example of starting off on a budget. Cheers Beverley xx
I recently managed to get my hands on some antique white cotton & linen nightwear with lace details. They must have been stored very well because everything is in excellent condition. I love wearing these items and feeling that link to the past.
Great advice! I was folding laundry at a friend’s house, although these people might be considered “well off“, their underwear was threadbare, often not the right size, and certainly did not reflect the amazing people that they are! I’ve made it my goal for myself to get rid of everything that doesn’t fit and anything tattered. I upped my PJ game last year!
I don’t always have the most matchy matchy sleepwear but I always have a nice presentable robe to throw over myself in the mornings. But now I’m thinking I need to do an aggressive overhaul of my PJ wardrobe Plus I recently bought a prettier kimono style robe and it’s giving me life when I put it on lol
You are such a lovely lady!!! I love that you make these videos, and share what you learned in Paris. I have been wearing tshirt dresses to bed, but wanted to know how to elevate my sleepwear look now that I’ll be moving out of my family’s house in April when I get married! Thanks so much for this resource.
Jennifer! Thank you for telling us about Plush Necessities. I finally found a white terry bathrobe that is long enough, and generous enough to cover my girls. The shipping was extremely quick. I love my new robe. Great customer service. Update: I bought my 10 year old granddaughter a nice fluffy blue robe from Plush Necessities. I like their items. ❤
After watching this video, I went through my pj drawer and threw out anything ratty. Turns out, at the bottom of the drawer were several great matched robes and nightgowns I never wear. I put one on and proudly went to the living room to watch tv with my family. My little boy wanted to know where I was going!
After watching this video I decided I want to get new sleepwear for my birthday. I definitely agree that wearing nice clothes day and night is such a confidence booster and just motivates me in general to be an overall better person. It is not vain to dress neat and clean. It's funny because the Amazon pajamas are high end to me haha
Yes, please! Jennifer, you have such a balanced approach to life. I’d love a video on your approach to diet and exercise for both yourself and your children. Thanks!

I've always loved sleepwear, as I'm not a trackpants person and I like to be comfy as long as possible and for me sleepwear does it. Funnly enough most of my sleepwear is about 3 -4 years old and I slowly started replacing at the end of last year. With 4 new pairs of cute patterned flannel pjamas for winter and 3 new slips and a short set for summer :) :)
Thank you for this! I have had some high-end sleepwear and yet, after (for some) almost 20 years and three pregnancies, they are not so chic anymore! I always find a reason not to get something new for myself, so you (and my husband) are encouraging me to maybe sort that out 😅

I was motivated many times to go get some nice pyjamas and then almost got a heart attack when I saw the prices .. for pieces, that nobody, maybe the partner, will see and in my case, he does not really care what I wear. Also, I hate that the nice feminine pyjamas never have high necks (I am very sensitive around my neck and get a sore throat immediatelly). It is a bit frustrating ..

If you learn to sew you could add them yourself. The button holes will take some time though
I love April Cornell! She is wonderful.
love love love April Cornell!!!
@@LaviniaDeMortalium 😂🤣😂
I agree ,if its not ratty or holy or stained get a pill shaver. We live in such a throwaway society , why not refresh the clothes we have?
@@skyespaulding I agree and I do mend my own clothes. I also have a depiller.
OMGosh the raspberry robe is my favorite! It reminds me of the wardrobes frequently shows in old Hollywood films.
But...I can't sleep wearing any clothes. I guess I just gotta keep my birthday suit looking presentable. 😅
Well, you never know when house fire happens, or neighborhood fire that has you evacuating, medical emergency and no time to dress or cannot dress, natural disasters. That will be reason enough to at least be covered from shoulders to knees.
Me either!!!
@@holyexperience1976 To be frank, in the event of any one of those things happening....I'm not much going to care if I fly out of the house buck nekked. I guess I'm just not modest in a crisis. 😬
Same!
If by chance there is fire, I always have my robe within reach.
I sleep nude. I just keep my robe on the back of my door where it literally could be grabbed in a split second.
All I need is comfort after working all day and looking after kids as long as they are clean it’s good for zzzzzzzz
Recently I bought my husband a pair of high quality pyjamas. He used to sleep in his T-shirts and sweatpants. He understands the quality now too.
It’s not “elegant” looking like what Jennifer is showing but they’re presentable and cosy

@@mnoeliarc Hi Noella, thank you so much for that, will have a look :-) xx
When you said, 'but first you have to declutter the sleepwear you already own' i literally don't own a single piece of sleepwear 😂 definitely going to take some inspiration from this video!
But if I did have some gorgeous sleepwear, I’d surely scrub my baseboards while wearing it...
I also have zero proper sleepwear, listening to her like... I have shopping to do! :)
@@CaseyAdella totally! ☺

So lovely, Jen....
Thank you for gently reminding us that we should be exquisite in self-care at all times.
Thank you for the video! I just pulled out a vintage sleeping gown and matching robe that belonged to my grandmother. Feels magical. It also came with matching fluffy heels...they don't fit, but I will display them next to my makeup vanity.
That Rya Collection nightgown and robe was so stunning 🥺💖
What's their name?
I like wearing summer dresses as nightgowns. Just inexpensive but pretty ones.
So do I..glad to hear I’m not the only one
Thank you, Michel!
I love that you kept yourself covered. You didn't show yourself in anything too revealing. Thank you. Refreshing.
I wear Jockey. Oh my god! I have so many pajama sets. They feel like heaven. I did buy the silk $300 set at Tommy John’s.
I visit the sites regularly and just look at the sales. You can find underwear for $1.99
This is the time of year to be watching for deals!
Love Steph
Thank you so much, Steph ♥️
You've inspired me to throw away all my trash sleepwear and stock up on new, pretty, yet comfortable and modest sleepwear. My 41st birthday is coming up, so that's my present to myself. Can't wait to throw away the seriously ugly stuff I sleep in. Holy moly.
Lovely sleepwear. I'll be shopping the dupe section, lol! You've inspired me to replace my worn out sleepwear.
Try TJ Max? I’ve heard they have good things
Nothing wrong with the dupe section! ☺️
You look great in everything Jennifer! It’s always inspiring to know that other women find wearing their best, even for bed is important🌹
Thank you, Nikki!
I also like it a bit overzised, silk and cotton are the best in my opinion. My fav is a cotton flannel classic sleepwear set for winter.
I'm glad I saw this... I don't feel so bad about all the satin pajama sets I just bought. Living alone it seems unnecessary but it's good to feel collected.
Great video! I’m still trying to update my sleepwear- the Cami NYC set & the Fleur’t jogger sets were my faves 😊
Great pieces! I have acquired some wonderful sleepwear but have failed to purge the worn out stuff. Out it goes...TODAY!
I agree I always buy a new PJ if I’m going to a conference and I know I will be sharing a room with a colleague.
Oohh the long Fleur't long robe is stunning!!
I recently managed to get my hands on some antique white cotton & linen nightwear with lace details. They must have been stored very well because everything is in excellent condition. I love wearing these items and feeling that link to the past.
Well....I don’t wear anything to bed since it’s just my husband and myself. But what you showed are quite lovely.
TMI
Lmao
Yes! The best.

Thanks Jennifer for all your hard work. This video is an inspiration. :)
Thank you, Natalie!
I don’t always have the most matchy matchy sleepwear but I always have a nice presentable robe to throw over myself in the mornings. But now I’m thinking I need to do an aggressive overhaul of my PJ wardrobe
Plus I recently bought a prettier kimono style robe and it’s giving me life when I put it on lol
You are such a lovely lady!!! I love that you make these videos, and share what you learned in Paris. I have been wearing tshirt dresses to bed, but wanted to know how to elevate my sleepwear look now that I’ll be moving out of my family’s house in April when I get married! Thanks so much for this resource.
my sleepwear ... clean hair, soft skin and a string of pearls
Thank you for the lovely video, dear!
Thank you so much! xx
I plan to declutter my sleep wear too. I think it has been years since I bought a new one! Thank you, Jennifer :)
I'm all about the big t-shirt.
After watching this video, I went through my pj drawer and threw out anything ratty. Turns out, at the bottom of the drawer were several great matched robes and nightgowns I never wear. I put one on and proudly went to the living room to watch tv with my family. My little boy wanted to know where I was going!
I’ve purchased a few of Lilysilk’s men’s items over the years, and I must concur with you they’re wonderful indeed!
Jennifer- you just look so healthy- thin and trim! Please do a post- 4 children weight loss video. You look incredible!!
Thank you, Kristy!
I agree!!
Yes, please! Jennifer, you have such a balanced approach to life. I’d love a video on your approach to diet and exercise for both yourself and your children. Thanks!
Your eyes look so beautiful in this video! So green and defined!
Thank you! I'm upgrading my wardrobe and I'm focusing on sleepware now😊

It's so good, isn't it? The quality is amazing.
Someday i might be able to buy a pretty and stylish pijamas.. in the meantime I going to keep my Snoopy t-shirt
Thank you for this! I have had some high-end sleepwear and yet, after (for some) almost 20 years and three pregnancies, they are not so chic anymore! I always find a reason not to get something new for myself, so you (and my husband) are encouraging me to maybe sort that out 😅

This is off topic, but lady, you are GORGEOUS!!!!! A truly stunning and pretty lady!
This is the kind of video that I didn't even know I needed. Loved every single piece that you showed.
Menopause and the associated constantly-feeling-overheated has made me change all my clothing and nightwear in recent years.
I've read all your books, you motivate me to look good every day, all the time. You are my idol and role model❤️❤️
Would you do a video on how you maintain a healthy figure? :)
