American LNG exports are surging, on the back of European demand | FT Energy Source
Вставка
- Опубліковано 19 жов 2022
- Exports have skyrocketed for America’s LNG producers as demand soars, particularly from Europe. Last December, the US became the world’s biggest exporter of this super chilled fuel for the first time. But as the FT’s Justin Jacobs explains, not everyone’s happy about the expansion in output, and the effect it may have on the environment.

Natural gas buy zone?? Should we buy??
That extra large eco guy doesn't understand that the EU is already transitioning to renewable sources of energy and gas is used in power-plants that are used to balance the increased demand during peak hours or when renewables work with decreased efficiency. The rest of the electricity is made from nuclear fission and/or coal. Gas is by far the best medium for this, because all you have to do is light it up and it makes electricity almost instantly - unlike nuclear or even worse coal which has to burn for hours before the expected peak. Yet more coal is the only option without gas. If you stop gas exports, Europe will have to burn more coal. MUCH more coal ... for decades until it builds enough nuclear power plants to replace both coal and renewables because solar + wind and nuclear do not really work well together without either gas or coal to balance them out.
yes its sad so little knowledge people have in the field, like California that wants more electric cars but cannot supply enough power for the ones they have 👏when you elect people who know nothing about the subject of relevance to lead, you get bad decisions.
All that may be true, but I think the take away from this should be the unspeakable immorality of the USA.
Yeah, he looked really impressive at his little presser with 5 people and 10 reporters.
The argument about Europe needed to go green is stupid. They wouldn't be in this position if they hadn't shut down so many nuclear power plants, which are far cleaner than wind or solar.

You people sound like 9/11 truthers.
Nope, cost-benefit is all wrong. US citizens paying more for LNG will cost government votes, risk of alienating allies, and makong billions is insignificant to US economy. Much more likely is Putin's false flag attack on Nordstream trying to break up NATO alliance.
I knew this was coming. The low cost of natural gas was killing nuclear power. In my little way I have been that little chicken saying in my facebook, video chats, to friends that we need nuclear because LNG was going to make gas really expensive. Natural gas has been substituting when renewables can't generate. I think that only nuclear, perticually newer designs, is the way to go.
And people have not been listening to your wise words? Awful.
Nuclear still needs water to operate. With this year droughts many nuclear power plants in Europe had to shut down.

What wasn't mentioned is that right now, about three dozen LNG tankers are sitting off the coast of Spain and nearby countries, waiting for space at the terminals to unload their gas. The Europeans want the gas, but don't have the capacity to import any more LNG.
It stands to reason, therefore, that Europeans will be building out storage capacity for gas and electricity and other fuel options. There could be investment opportunities here since this is a must-have.
@@morpher44 That makes sense, but it will take years to build, by which time the war is likely to be over and they will be able to import gas from Russia at a much cheaper price than any LNG.
@@Dave_Sisson Your reasoning is flawed. Europe will never go back to Russia for gas to previous levels, it's only going to diminish. Europe doesn't want to be vulnerable in an energy war. Also Russia has demonstrated to not be a trustworthy partner (at all). All are prime motivators for Europe's switch. Whether the war will be over or not will not make much of a difference. Simply said, for Europe it's a matter of safety. Europe wouldn't want to fund a country that poses the greatest threat to its Eastern borders. One thing that will come out of this, once Europe has become sufficiently energy independent from Russia they will adapt a much aggressive foreign policy towards Russia as they would able to do this since Russia will no longer hold much sway because of their energy exports.
@@flybeep1661 I mostly agree with that, especially the statement that Europe will never go back to depending on Russia. But I do think they will buy limited amounts of gas after the war ends, especially if the government is overthrown as Russia will be in great economic difficulty. Gas from a pipeline will always be cheaper than LNG, but they will ensure more diversified sources such as more from Algeria, Norway, etc as well as some from Russia.
@@Dave_Sisson If Russia arrests Putin, withdraws from Ukraine, and pays reparations to Ukraine, peace treaties are negotiated and honored, only then might the western world start working with Russia again. To show how warped the international natural gas market is, the price of gas in the U.S. has about doubled over the last year due to LNG exports, but the U.S. market price drops significantly each time there is a problem with an LNG export terminal, because each accident means more gas is left for U.S. consumers.

One molecule of methane has the same greenhouse effect of 20 CO2 molecules. Natural Gas produces less carbon when it's burned to produce energy however any methane that escapes or isn't burned is equivalent to 20 times the same number of CO2 with respect to greenhouse effect. NOTE: I have no idea about how much methane escapes the system and the ammount could be insignificant. One point I would like to have seen is the carbon emissions due to the freezing process - from a quick search I found out 8% of the gas that enters the plant is spent to make it liquid.
Another important point is the political aspect of exporting fossil fuels - a point well made by the Green Army General: if a country is really dedicated to combatting climate change it should also reduce it's fossil fuel exports. A few weeks before Biden's speech about the Inflation Reduction Plan that subsidizes a lot of domestic companies in the renewables and EV, the US started the construction of a huge oil export facility at the Gulf of Mexico. Too bad Europe didn't diversify their sources of energy. Wind and solar are best used as a supplement. Nuclear (fission) would be better and France went this route. Fusion power is a pipe dream that's always 20+ years in the future. I got my degree in Nuclear Engineering in 1974 and there were many soon to be graduates looking forward to working on fusion power. The professor in our senior class put the kibosh on that; stating that if practical fusion power was demonstrated that day, fusion power plants would be starting operation no sooner than 2000, 26 years later. My bet on base power supplies would be natural gas and nuclear (fission) power for the next several decades until something better comes along. The US has enough natural gas reserves to last to the end of this century. I'm not so optimistic about nuclear power because of the NIMBYs.
@Tony549 - "Too bad Europe didn't diversify their sources of energy. Wind and solar are best used as a supplement".
In fact, it could be said that they diversified (to wind and solar) *far too much*. Very VERY bad move and now they are paying the price - literally. They should have stayed with nuclear power.
Wind and solar can NEVER give a place 24/7 baseload power. As you say, they are best used as a supplement.
Only nuclear, fossil-fuel and hydro-power can give you baseload power (geothermal too but not everywhere has that).
One of the things I'm interested in is gas-extraction from *sewage* - there is an endless supply of it and it is usually quite easy to add a gas plant to an existing wastewater treatment plant.

Europe has more diversified energy sources than the US and is generally less energy dependent. Europe operates more nuclear power stations than the US and also more renewables. The difference is that the US uses much more oil and coal.
Europe actually diversified a lot... sadly due to eco scaremongering, it went the "renewable" way which is ridiculous for a continent with 6 months with barely any sun and not that many windy places that are not already occupied by humans. And thus it needed gas to fill in for lack of sun or lack of wind. The only option without LNG will be burning more coal. GJ eco crowd.
@@lamebubblesflysohigh the current - potential - electricity problem is due to 20 French nuclear power stations being offline. Not because of renewables or gas. Actually the share of renewables has grown all the time and some regions manage very stable grids with 80% renewables.

But we the US lack LNG ports to deliver high qualities to Europe. Biden’s Energy Secretary missed a great opportunity . LNG tankers are also in short supply .
Natural Gas added should we buy more
If people in Europe were to paint their houses black, this may reduce gas demand. Most energy-saving paints use fine ceramic particles mixed in with the paint. It is the same material that NASA uses on the space shuttle tiles. A guy reluctantly tried their test of putting a layer of ceramic powder on his hand and then placing a lit propane torch on it. He was not burned.

Cool, so we can pay double here in America while we supply the rest of the world with LNG. I LOVE IT HERE OMG
Sadly, the Trudeau Liberals have done nothing to help either Canadians or Europeans meet their energy needs!
Why are delaying a transition to renewables in Europe? 1) People freezing to death and industries completely shutting down for 10 years while we build infrastructure is bad. 2) Some places in Europe (e.g. Germany) cannot meet energy demand with wind and solar. That's not an anti-renewables opinion. Experts agree on this.
@@richardwilson57 Fine. Please share a link to a scientific study that shows the mean daily sunlight intensity or mean daily wind speed and persistence in Germany is suitable to generate enough electricity to be reliable and worth the commitment of real estate. I'll wait. Take your time troll.
Firstly, Germany absolutely can meet energy demand with wind and solar, they just lack investments and storage solutions. Secondly, why on earth did Germany shut down it's nuclear power plants? Seems like Merkel just went the way of least resistance to stay in power.
Because renewables don't work. In the cold, dark European winter you don't get much solar. And wind is highly unreliable.
@@ulyks Proof. No study have read that actually did the math indicates that. Usa helps to blow up russian gas pipe. Now usa lpg exports boom!
Russia was most likely behind it, but your story is cooler I guess so we should go with it.
Blown up inside, it was Russia. Blown up outside, we won't know unless there is some forensic evidence like some bomb components that could be traced back to the country of origin. But even that is not proof. I think this was NOT USA because USA/NATO has been very delicate with Russia. There might even be a 3rd party out there that wants to disrupt energy infrastructure in order to benefit. Iran, Qatar, China, and Canada also have a large stake in natural gas and may benefit. Some of these might also want NATO and Russia to distrust each other further.
