I am in my 30s and I was in AP classes. We weren't expected to understand run-on sentances until at least sixth grade. 😮 I keep hearing about and meeting students that can hardly read by sixth grade. Which obviously- is terrible. I also have had to adjust to the online world, and how often many rules, including spelling, are disregarded. I know there are guidelines to be followed, but I think student goals need to be appropriately obtainable. I'm very impressed if there are actually k-2 with these skills. I LOVE the self-edit chart! I'll check that out for creative writing especially . There are some workbook series that are all about learning by editing incorrect passages. Modeling is great for also learning constructive criticism/ positive feedback which is desperately needed in today's world. A lack of edifying helps no one, as well as that boundary of taking ownership! ❤ When they get it right, hopefully grow and have less edits- I imagine that would be an even better feeling! When they have been used to being active in that way.
I’ve often looked over students’ writing, seen a ton of edits that need to be made, but when I ask them if there’s anything that needs work, I’ll get the response “Nope, it’s all good!” Has anyone else experienced this? Type YES in the comments if you can relate.
YES 💕😆 This is age-old. I remember kids doing this when I was in school, whether because they felt embarrassed/nervous and didn't know what to do, or because lazy. I think it's usually both. Laziness stems from a place of having given up on oneself/ aren't used to being encouraged to be self-sufficient vs relying on others who might be impatient or whatnot.

Yes, modeling and self-checking are great tools and can be taught at a young age!
