You never hear this song played, and it's a wonderful song.
I once saw Neil Tennant walking down The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace. So random, but a memory I will never forget.

Fantastic song, classic sound of psb, beautiful melody and lyrics. One of their best song.

This is a highlight of an album with many highlights. In an interview, Neil stated that he drew on the common dream people have of having a prominent visitor over, only to find out that one is naked, or the dog wets the carpet.
The Pet Shop Boys song-by-song commentary at geowayne.com has the following insight:
“The dream has four main characters: the narrator, his lover (who is now dead), Princess Diana (who was very much alive at the time this song was recorded, but whose marital problems were all too well known), and the Queen herself. When Di (her nickname perhaps serving as a pun on the word "die") sadly states from personal experience, "There are no more lovers left alive," it sends the narrator into his own reverie in which he notes how true this is since "it's happened to me and you" (his lover). When the narrator finally wakes up from this disturbing dream "in a sweat" (an image that parallels the night sweats that are a common symptom of AIDS) and "desolate," he reiterates the fact that "there are no more lovers left alive"-despite the dream having come to an end. It seems clear that the narrator has already lost his lover, probably because of AIDS, and that he himself is now personally coping with the disease.”
That interpretation adds additional layers to an already haunting song that goes from tragic to comic, then back to tragic. It’s a demonstration of Rolling Stone magazine’s summation of the album that the depth of the songs “makes Very worth hearing again and again.”

One of my favorite PSB tracks. "People laughed and asked for autographs/photographs"

Always liked this one, it's got a special mood/atmosphere around it, a melancholic/haunting feeling.
Always looking forward to your PSB reactions, keep up the good work!

Everything was said already, so I just want to add that, for me, this is one of PSB's masterpieces. I love how the song flows along so smoothly with the horns and the strings playing along beautifully. It's a very sad song, but that makes me even like it more.
Looking forward to the next two songs from this album, they're equally great (IMO).

Orchestra arranged and conducted by Anne Dudley. Anne Dudley also plays the keyboard solo in the middle of the song.

"31st August, 1997, will always be remembered as the day in which Diana, Princess of Wales, died..." Those were the first words I heard when I turned the radio on that Sunday morning. I had heard about the crash in Paris when I went to bed (2am, it was Saturday night clubbing in those days) but hearing those words was an enormous shock to me and the whole country (world)

I remember when I heard the news in the Pacific time zone. My wife and I had just finished watching the Evita movie on VHS. I was already a bit weepy, and as soon as I turned off the player I saw the headline on the TV. I was bowled over, of course, and didn’t get much sleep that night.

According to an interview with neil tennant the idea from this song came from that he heard somewhere that brits most common dream at the time was the queen or someone high statue is coming around there house for a tea and the house is a total mess.. being naked in public in al unappropriate time or place featured hi on the survey for dreams as well

The Queen coming for tea is/ was a common dream among the English. I think there is a study that says that up to a third of Britains have that dream. It’s one of the AIds related songs from PSB.
    I love the song❤

No es de mis favoritas de very pero tampoco está mal. La que viene ahora "yesterday when I was mad " 😅si q me encanta, es divertida y el video es de locos. Sabes? Saludos Matt.

It's only appropriate that Lucca should show up for "Dreaming of the Queen". After all, she is one. Another good and clever PSB song. And a clever cat.

How how your pre listen hypothesis was turned on its head with the opening line 😂
The line "there were no more lovers left alive" referred to the AIDS crisis of the 80s and early 90s. The scenario where Neil is I'm the nude referenced an anxiety dream a lot of people suffer from.
It wasn't a firm favourite back in 1993 but over the past 31 years it's grown considerably in statue due to having lost friends to AIDS. Of course Diana and Queen Elizabeth II are no longer with us and their deaths has a massive seismic impact on this country (UK)
