  • Hope you do not mind the odd reaction. You know sometimes when you have a hunch or a feeling. You got to say what it is. In this instance, I was right on the button. I am not one to brag, but so glad I picked up on what this song was suppose to make you feel. Simply through its pure genius and voices that resonate in your heart and some magic. This is Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe with their song Ensueno from the album Barcelona. Do enjoy the reaction. Thank you for all the support.
    Lyrics:
In my dream i saw you
    En mi sueño te vi
Your light came from so far
Tu luz llegaba de tan lejos
    Your voice penetrates me
    Tu voz penetra en mi
    Vibrate in you
    Vibra en ti
    Vibrate in me
    Vibra en mi
    Gently leading me to you
    Suavemente me llevaba a ti
    I heard the sound
    Oí el sonido
    Your voice gently told me:
    Tu voz dulcemente me decía:
    "Come. Come with me ..."
    "Ven. Ven junto a mí..."
    Relive
    Volver a vivir
Know that my dream is not alone
Saber que mi sueño no está solo
    Encourage in me
    Alienta en mi
You and me singing the two
Tu y yo cantando los dos
I dreamed of being your own sea
Yo soñaba en ser tu mismo mar
    Your sea
    Tu mar
    It is a union bridge
    Es puente de union
    Of our souls
    De nuestras almas
    They fly (they fly)
    Vuelan (vuelan)
They call us (they call us)
    Nos llaman (nos llaman)
To the sound of eternity ...
    Al son de eternidad...

Thank you Hap for reacting to this song. The first time I heard Queen I was 15, 1974, I thought who is this man Freddie? I knew he was special, the songs he wrote were so unique, beautiful, and that voice, wow. Freddie is the greatest as far as I'm concerned. No one could do what he was capable of, and over the years he just became better and better. Science has crowned him the greatest vocalist in recorded history and I agree of course, but he was even more than that, there wasn't anything musically this gift from God wasn't capable of doing. Montsie and Freddie were fantastic together, they were destined to come together and create this beautiful album. Thanks again.

Oh, NO-- Freddie was the one who approached Montserrat -- and who wrote the entire opera -- he was quite trepidatious... she was his opera "idol" -- but they became great friends... and she said that Freddie taught her to be "free" --she was such a perfect singer -- and in opera, precision is ALL -- but Freddie showed her that she could sing perfect notes, but still have some freedom... they were a true love story...

    • @barbaramendoza2202

Freddie’s initial idea was to do a song together, and Montsy had been asked for a song for the Barcelona Olympics. They had such a friendship and musical kinship, that Montsy asked him “How many songs in an album?” After Freddie’s reply, she said “Well, we’ll do an album then!” This is seen being said by Freddie himself on video. Oh how he rose to the challenge!! There was a point when he and Mike Moran couldn’t come up with any more lyrics. They were “lyriced out” said Freddie. They contacted Tim Rice, who worked with Andrew Lloyd Webber. He wrote lyrics for 2 songs on the Barcelona album: Golden Boy and The Fallen Priest. Tim Rice said in an interview how theatrical the music was, so he based stories around them. “They were quite complex, not simple songs” he said.

Turn it on its head and listen to Montsy singing "Exercises in free love", wonderful. Freddie was going to do a covers album which is where "The great pretender" came about but Freddie shelved that to do this album which I think artistically was the better option and something he could not pass up. This album could have toured as an opera in its own right, it would have been magical if fate had taken a different turn.

LOVED your reaction, Hap, you were spot-on!! The phoenix bit was beautiful ❤️ To me, this album proves that Freddie's undoubtedly the GOAT: he simply could sing everything.
Also, I wanted to say that Freddie's accent is surprisingly good, especially for someone who didn't speak Spanish at all! Really impressive!
In case anyone's interested, the sound "ñ" is like the "gn" in French "cognac". It's en-suE-gno

I really love this song, there isn't really much to say but you definitely understand how amazing this song is. There was another person explaining the terms of baritone, soprano and falsetto very well so I also don't have to do that. But what I'm gonna say is that Freddie is a high baritone which is also why half of Ensueno is actually either sung in Tenor or in High Baritone range. (Tenor range is Michael Jacksons range, Roger Taylors range and Brian mays range just so you get an example) Tenor comes right after High Baritone which is why Freddie could sing so well in Tenor, because actually he is a high baritone and not just a baritone. As a Baritone I can say that if he was just a Baritone he could go lower than the note F2 but even when he hit an F2 it sounded like he can't go lower than that. Anyways what i'm trying to say is Freddie is not just a baritone but a high baritone which makes his voice not so deep but also not high while talking, and its also the reason he had a very big Vocal Range and could hit fascinating high notes. Please react to *_Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe - The Fallen Priest._* Till this day to me that is one of the MOST DRAMATIC songs I have EVER heard. Getting goosebumps every single time its just incredible what that song is about and how its done just wow WOW. You have to see it. Is probably my favorite song in the Barcelona Album and its very very underrated for what it is (you already saw the demo version to it ''Rachmaninov's Revenge'' which is like a demo of what Exercises in Free love is for Ensueno). Great Reaction.

  • @shaggyisbae
    @shaggyisbae 3 роки тому +18

    Great Reaction!
    There are some terms
I am gonna simplify it, ''Baritone'' Basically means a voice Which is rich and deep, Montserrat have a voice which is classified as ''Soprano'' and is considered to be one of highest voice types.
Why was it big of a deal for Freddie to use his ''Baritone'' voice?
Because he rarely used it, If you hear Queen songs or his solo albums, most of the songs have him singing very high, which is something Baritones are not supposed to do.
Although, If you watch Freddie's interview, You'll find that his talking voice is very deep, Especially in mid 80s, You can't even tell that this guy can sing so high.
And the voice term you mentioned at the near end is ''Falsetto''.
Montserrat is using it to sing high,
Freddie also use it, as evident in the song ''Made In Heaven'' and several others.
There are a lot of terms, i am not gonna go into it.
Personally, I think it is not necessary to have knowledge of this vocal terms to enjoy music, but it just makes it easy to understand better.
    You'll get there haha.❤️

He had some baritone songs but not so many. Think of "Crazy little thing called love" or "I'm going slightly mad". Like his PA Peter Freestone wrote in his book, Freddie was unsure to use his baritone voice for this record, because he thought his fans would be bewildered. But Montsy encouraged him.

A number of years ago I attended the highland games in Maxville, Ontario where the massed bands of at least 100 pipers played Amazing Grace. It started out with a lone piper, then four more joined in, and then all the rest joined. There was something about it, maybe just the swell of music when all the pipers joined in, that made me cry and I will cry every time I hear it. Ensueno evoked the same emotion. Perhaps it was the music plus the combination of two beautiful voices (not the words themselves; just the voices) that has the ability to bring tears.

    ..

I'm so happy that this was suggested to you. It's one of my favorites from the Barcelona album. Ensueno is pronounced more like "en-swain-yo." Once you get the Spanish vowels right it's pretty easy, I think. The word has to do with dreams/dreaming. Gorgeous song. Montsy wrote the lyrics to Freddie's Exercises in Free Love, as you know, and this is the glorious result.

Here's a snippet from the album's liner notes: "That following Sunday Montserrat Caballe surprised her audience (including Freddie Mercury) by performing one of the songs 'Exercises In Free Love' as the final encore at her sold-out recital in Covent Garden, London."
I recall reading somewhere else that she gave credit to Freddie & asked him to stand up and take a bow. I also think she had asked Freddie, the first time she heard him sing it if she could sing it at her upcoming recital, so I don't know why he would have been surprised, unless she sang her own lyrics & he didn't know about that beforehand. Mike Moran might have played piano for that recital. I'm not sure.
She was such an artist, dare I say "Diva," that she wouldn't perform with inferior accompaniment. One time when the orchestra was off, she said. "I can't sing with this orchestra. It is out of tune," and walked off the stage. At least that's what I read.

Thanks Karolyn for providing the extra bit of information. "Diva" you say.
I can imagine an artist doing that. Especially if they have worked with the world's best. After that, they are to expect the standard across the board.

Yes, I’ve heard this story before. Mike Moran did play the piano. He was at the opera with Freddie. He excused himself, and shortly thereafter he and Montsy were onstage performing. She introduced Freddie as the wrier and had him stand. He was shy and embarrassed (but proud). Beautiful story!!

Thanks for the great reaction& analysis. I have the album & love it. I also love that Montsy told h he must sing these songs in baritone. She knew his music because she had teenager kids who played it at home. She had never heard him speak & immediately knew his natural voice was baritone. When he was good her she told him he had an exceptional, war, rich barktone. So, a big part of this is him developinng, discovering his special gift . She said that with proper training he could have been one of the best operatic baritone in history. There are interviews on You where she talks about their time together. They're fascina by the way.
, Her family are all.opera skngers. Her husband was a well known tenor, Her daughter is also a slprano, & I think the son also sjngs.

I will be hated for this,I do agree that everyone in queen were extremely talented and had their strengths but a big reason they worked as well as they did is their harmonies and complementing each other
But when it comes to singing,I know he was the lead singer but a lot of people say they were equal as singers
I think it comes down to preference they sang very differently
But I cant agree that they were equal singers especially when you consider the range and styles he could sing especially with this
No disrespect to roger or brian who can both sing and bring emotion.. I like their singing
But not to be rude at them but imo Freddie was in a different league
He's not singing in his usual register? (He normally sang in)With someone hes not used to singing with in a language that not his! And it's so beautiful
But her singing is just wow even if you dont like this type of music normally I doubt many people wouldn't enjoy this some how it effects you emotionally
I just looked up the lyrics and it simply and perfectly sums up how they felt I think that's why it comes accross so well
I dont mean technically she was a professional opera singer but she said with Freddie he gave her a freedom and she sang as she never had before
I'm not particularly religious but I pray ! There is a heaven I would hate to think they're not singing together now!
    But I've decided they are!
I felt upset when she was talking about him and said she will see him again soon you could feel the love and respect they had for each other

Very well said. I will just say, that this was actually in the very comfortable range for tenor, he did not sing any massive high notes, but this still the comfortable range for a tenor. I think Freddie was going for an opera sound. Opera tenors do sing with far more depth. People are used to the sound of pop tenors. The divide between pop tenors and opera tenors are the biggest. In other words they sound the least like each other between all different voice types. People don't realize how opera tenors really sound.

Sorry yes I re read it
      No his voice wasn't difficult

Well said, Blue Bell -- I agree with pretty much all of what you said... as far are Queen - I have been in love with Brian May since I was 15 --and now I'm 60.... so, obviously, that did not quite work out (lol) --and I love the vocals of Brian and Roger... but I recall an interview -- oh, probably 30 years ago -- where Brian said: (and I'm paraphrasing) - something like: "We all wrote songs.. and we all would argue about which ones would be on the albums... and of course, we wanted to sing our own songs... (well, except for John) -- but, in the end, we all realized that everything sounded better when Freddie sang it.."

    • @marciebulsaraorcutt
      @marciebulsaraorcutt 3 роки тому +2

@@GinMae I was just going to say the same thing: Brian had said that Freddie would take a song and sing it in a way that would just bring out the meaning. Brian ALSO commented re songwriting, that if he was writing something for himself to sing, he would write it differently than if it was intended for Freddie: If he was writing it for Fred to sing, he would make it more... challenging/difficult than for himself. (He wrote easier singing parts for himself.) ;D

Again, a brilliant intuitive take on this ethereal song so packed with emotion on a multitude of levels. At the time it was such a radical notion - they were the first duo of opera & rock, forever to hold that title. As thrilled as he was to sing with her I think she was simply enchanted that he could see in her so much. A love fest, crafting music between them.

It was a dream for Freddie & I’m so glad for him that it was well received.
The Mr Bad Guy album was such a flop (as far as record company was concerned), they completely flipped when Jim Beach said the follow up album was to be a duet album with an opera singer....and paid Freddie a lot of money to go away.....fools! Thankfully it still happened

... we are so lucky to have found you amidst this enormous universe ✨ called social media. You are so beautifully moved by some of the music we enjoy together with you, & it warms our 💕 hearts to see over the past year of your channel how you have taken Freddie & his music into your soul. It's so hard for us who have cherished not only his music but also him as a man of such a loving heart , to let go of our sadness of losing him so young. The pleasure I get listening to your appreciation of all of the band is so needed to keep Freddie's memory alive. Your critique of his music is often so educational AND so from your heart. In this song ENSUENO particularly, knowing he himself & with Mike Moran on piano could sing alongside the ultimate opera Diva & create such overwhelming beauty with music brought tears to both our eyes. It was almost hard to believe that Freddie's "flippant gesture" as he called his agreement to make an entire album, not just one song, could have come out so perfectly was initially surprising to him as well as the critics. As I usually tear up when I listen to this album almost daily, I so love the thought that he got to achieve such accolades & self- satisfaction knowing his own death was imminent . I look at his face closely in all his performances of the Barcelona album songs onstage & am so happy he got to feel the successful applause of the audience. I wish we knew what Freddie's IQ must have been... I'll bet it was off the chart. Would you comment on that?

Freddie was only as good as the fans would allow. Meaning that he was brilliant but what is the point of being brilliant when you have no audience. Just my two cents. He was for his ppl. That's vibe I get. Though ... with that comes an awful lot of treachery.
Thanks kindly for your comment too. Glad you found me in the vast ocean of the social media world. 💜👑

Freddie had Mary Austin set up a foundation for aids and I believe it was the Phoenix foundation or some title . Maybe this some however remote reverence like I feel they did in guide me home, witch I believe was his asking for someone to guide me home ,heaven his final destination. Therefore the connection of these two singers of song understood each other and Freddie's impending destiny. Monsey was there for him ,and made that transition meaning for him. That's my feeling on the sad time. RIP Freddie. Always here through you art!
