"African Girl" is about embracing all of who you are... your past, your present, your future... being proud of your heritage, your family and community because they influence who you become. It's about having a vision for your life that chooses to overcome adversity with grace and dignity, while building up those around you.
Lyrics
See I’ve been walking down this road
for about 35 years now, and I can tell you, it's been one hell of a ride
And I've been carrying my father's words that he said to me
learn to be wise, walk with integrity and be honest
and I can hear my grandma say, child I've got nothing to give you
but may God be with you, in that distant land
I am an African girl, well I know where I'm coming from
And I know who I want to be
I am trying to defying everything they said of us
we who have chocolate skin
In the back of my mind all I can hear ooh ooh are voices
of those who are here and those who've already gone
And I can hear them whispering, mwari witu,
when you go their land, please represent us well
and I can hear my grandma say, child I've got nothing to give you
but may God be with you, in that distant land
I am an African girl, and I know where I'm coming from
And I know who I want to be
I am trying to defying everything they said of us
we who have chocolate skin x2
I will sing, I will sing, I will sing oooohhh
Ngai, wa Ibrahamu, ithe witu, udirikane
tondu wa thakame ya murugwo, udirikane, udirikane
ndeithagia maundu makwa mothe, ndikamachonorithie, udirikane
ndeithagia maundu makwa mothe, ndikamachonorithie, udirikane
I will sing, I will sing, I will sing
I am an African girl, and I know where I'm coming from
And I know who I want to be

I'm so incredibly thankful for all the encouraging comments and so glad that this song has meant so much to so many... blessings and peace. Naomi
6 years down the road is still so amazing and i wish i know how to support in a little way, we make African neckpieces and we could make you a Bespoke piece just for you. this song touches more than the bone
6 years later , 22 years now, feeling woman enough this song has the same effect ; Still makes perfect sense ❤❤❤
@@SPERIC-bx3dp I'm so glad to read that this song still offers life ❤❤❤

Discovering this song 6 years after its release and proving that true art never gets old. Ayeeeh!
I found it in some Kenyan indie playlist that is ❤❤
@@lydiahwachira64 Eh, please please share that link! :)
Totally.. I get introduced to it 7 years later
@@lifeistpoet3994 as they say: never too late! :)
It's a beautiful song and Naomi is amazing .
This song, in my opinion, is very consoling for all the homesick African women who end up traveling to different nations in an attempt to improve their own and occasionally their families situations. Thank You Naomi Wachira🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
You're welcome!
Who is here with me 2020 I just loved this song. ♥️♥️🤗
This song definitely deserves more views than this.
why is it that good music in Kenya does not receive enough airplay like those trash songs
It breaks down to nchi ya kitu kidogo, unfortunately
The majority of 'us', sadly, are too 'basic' to handle real topics, largely lacking the mental depth to appreciate actual art unless it's 'cool'. Capitalism plays a large part too and if aren't willing to sell out, you might have to struggle.
Thank you so much Yvonne! The kikuyu part is a simple prayer that I don't become an embarrassment to my family and asking God to remember me while I'm in a foreign land.
Beautiful. X
I am leaving my home country in a few months for a foreign one. I will be sure to make a clip with this song and make sure I capture that bit.
@@3233kare wishing you all the blessings as you start your new journey. May you thrive and flourish and make your ancestors proud ❤️
