My biggest tip for drawinf realisticly is to play closely attention to your refremce photo, if you have one. Like, looking at the shadows, the value, to help so you can get fair results.
I had a go at noticing brightness (or "value") differences in real life. The trouble is, your brain tells you, "that leaf is green", "that shirt is red", "that water is blue". If you focus on identifying the *actual shade of colours you see* rather than what your brain interprets them to be, then you realize that in reality the shades of brightness vary a lot. For example, just looking out the window from where I'm sitting at the tree across the road, the brightest leaves catching the sunlight are almost a pale yellow-green, while the darkes shadows are so deep a grey that it's difficult to pick out individual leaves. Of course there are lots of average shade of green leaves, but the difference in brightness in real life is more than you think, which is why pushing those values is essential for realism.
This is also a way to re-look at the “modern” artists such as the impressionists and following them, the fauvist painters. Sometimes your brain initially says “WTF” but as your gaze continues you lean more and more toward the “that looks right” side of things. Just look at some Matisse works and you’ll SEE what I mean.
Why would anyone think you need expensive equipment to draw well, I only use a hb graphite pencil and an eraser to draw, the fanciest I’ll go is a mechAnical pencil and a kneaded eraser
You just need to buy quality supplies and you dont need everything just buy what works for you . My work are all done with Generals 2B charcoal and Strathmore 2h pencil and a chamois nothing more www.artworkbyjohn.com
I watch Draw With Jazza, and others who've done some cheap art supplies challenges... and now here's *more* proof that you don't need a ton of fancy expensive supplies to get started in art.
I just purchased some toned paper for the first time. This video was REALLY helpful, not just for toned paper but for any pencil or graphite drawing. And you’re right; I realise that my drawings never look as realistic as the reference photo because I’m too hesitant about going too dark or too light, and I just end up with 50 shades of grey 😂. Thank you so much.
I've actually started taking source images and desaturating, and pushing contrast to get a better idea of values. This brief tuto tells me I've been going the right direction. Many thanks.
Wow that’s one of the most important things I’ve ever heard about drawing. It makes so much sense. That’s why having a pro give tips and suggestions. Thanks
contrast and value is the key, if you are doing a colour drawing, whether its a portrait or whatever else it might be.. convert it to GREYSCALE on your computer and you will see the piece in a whole new way. You will see the contrast and values pop right out at you, never be afraid to go dark. Another excellent video Kirsty xxx
Absolutely right. When I was younger my family couldn't afford art supplies. Learned this with just a number two pencil. It's so true. You can make it highly realistic with just one pencil, but you have to learn values. It's easier to get more depth with art pencils, but learning the technique is key.
Ahh~ Michone! This looks amazing and you did a wonderful job on this. YOu are so right. I think before even starting to do something in color it is really the best to get started with black and white drawings. It helps to understand the shadows and light way more and also you just don´t feel overwhelmed with all the colors and have to worry if this is the right color for skin or not etc.
Thank you so much I completely agree, I think a lot of people do feel overwhelmed with all the colours and thats why I think this video will help a lot of people out 💕😀
You´re welcome :) Oh I´m very sure you helped a ton of peoples with this! Even more so for beginners, so they see that they don´t need fancy things to to amazing art.
This tip definitely helped me because you reminded me again to follow that tip in ALL of my drawings. I drew a self-portrait as a child. I hadn’t framed it yet and thought I could make it a little better. I started adding darker values and i noticed that made a huge difference right in front of my eyes. 😊 Thanks agin.
Wow....As an artist myself, what a beautiful way to teach the love between the hand and the medium you can Achieva masterpiece. Awesome job girl thank you so much for the love that you shared.
I have to compliment you. You are a superb artist and I hope to get even a fraction as good as you. I have watched every video you have out at least once and many of them a couple times already and I never get tired of them. Keep up the excellent work. I will be a patron very soon.Pat Meuchel
Thank you Pat for your support for all these years that is really amazing that you have watched so many of my videos and I would love to have you as one of my patrons 💕😀
This was the first portrait i ever attempted when i signed up for your patreon.. It is still one of my favorites that I've drawn to this day (much thanks to you!).
Really good video. Thanks for sharing. One thing I find hard is drawing from imagination and then figuring out the tones and values from something that doesn't exist.
It's also very important to chose a very good reference to work from. It's unbelievable the amount of people I see that use a poor reference with no dark or light shadows and then expect to create a realistic drawing form this. The drawing process becomes so much easier when the ref picture of model has a decent light source.
Amazing. I'm an artist that is just getting back into art after a long time, & I'm learning so much from you. You're very talented, & have great content on your channel.
Thank you so much for this video i'm a beginner drawing artist and I've always felt that if i got my shading down and values correct then my drawing would turn out really good and you just verified that for me so thank you! My goal is to draw realistically for the most part animals. When not drawing realistically i love how you draw and paint so loosely like with the deer and i would love to have my paintings similar. Your style is superb. Thanks so much!
I am a big fan of the Walking Dead. Michon' is one of my favorite characters and your art piece captured the essence of her using this paper and your technique. Love it.
I have three drawing pencils (from Tombow): 3H and 4H for drawing, 2B for shading. When you're doing this kind of drawing, getting the values right seems to be more important than in normal painting.
Amazing! Don’t know if you said who you were going to draw, as I had the sound off, but recognised her very early on anyway. Michone always looks grumpy, but clearly makes for a good subject to draw and you were spot on with the shading etc.
Inspiring 👍 I DO have a hard time getting some areas dark enough because of “messing up”.....glad I’m not the only one, it seems like others may struggle with that too ☺️ thank you! Beautiful work!
You.are soo amazing at such young age . Thank you for the tips. I am kind of new to sketching .. i will follow this tip with the sketch i am working on right now . I love your videos
I just started accepting commission and unlike any other artist, I advice my client to give me photos that has lights and shadows, or the source of the light should be at one side of the face so to create dimensions and dept in the drawing.
I love watching all your videos, it helps me a lot to level up my poor drawing skills 😅,,, I am now a fan of yours😘,, all your works are amazing ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I truely love your work ....you drawings are all awesome the way you draw is amazing your really really good im so glad your on youtube..... i've learned alot from you, your a great teacher🤗💜💜
This is just amazing, I really love the way how realistic your portraits look like... I'm just in love with your work and I wish one day my drawings will achieve the same level as your drawings 😍 best of luck 🖤🖤

My biggest tip for drawinf realisticly is to play closely attention to your refremce photo, if you have one. Like, looking at the shadows, the value, to help so you can get fair results.
Drawing/painting from life...
my tip is to get tone and value placed correctly

I completely agree 😀
This is the most helpful comment I’ve ever seen
Thank you so much for that advice

This has boosted my confidence by knowing that I don’t need expensive supplies
Thats great news Emma glad you liked the video 💕😀

@@jcerullo5015 AMAZING JOB MY FRIEND!!AMAZING
She's using 2 of the most expensive colored pencils on the market and very expensive paper, but okay.
I watch Draw With Jazza, and others who've done some cheap art supplies challenges... and now here's *more* proof that you don't need a ton of fancy expensive supplies to get started in art.
Yes its so true, a big misunderstanding is thinking you need lots of fancy things when you really don't 😀
I love jazza and Kristy both
Just 2 of the most expensive colored pencils and expensive paper.
Draw with jazza

And when i was younger i always thought how useless the white pencil was☹️
(sorry... late reaction)
white pencils were actually useless to me, because I never really had one...
Same 🤣
Same but now I always use it 😂
in order to create amazing realistic drawings you need to be Kirsty Partridge
And Lachri Fine Art
Haha thank you lol 😂💕😀
Nah, you just need practice
Casey Barlow never agreed more👍👍
Casey Barlow Worst comment ever.

Indeed, these basic points of shadow and highlights are so vital. The “Old Masters” used Lamp Black and Lead White to maximise contrast.
THIS IS SINKING IN...WOW.Thank you Kirsty...awesome work here too
Thank you 💕😀
I only use my 1 charcoal pencil and rolled up bondpaper for a blending stump
This tip definitely helped me because you reminded me again to follow that tip in ALL of my drawings.

Looks really easy. I wish it was. Superb drawing. Shows just what can really be done
You know you're mind almost turns this into a "color" picture because it is so realistic.
This is why I love toned paper thank you for your support 💕😀
You seriously have the best videos and advice. Thank you for helping me perfect my work.
Completely agree with you Kirsty. The tones, shadows and light are the key for realism 👍👏
Thank you Marangelli glad you agree and I hope it helped 😀💕

I like you. You're inspiring. I have now really began, so have a lot to learn. And I did learn something today. Thank you!
You passed being an artist long ago you are a wizard !!!!
I have three drawing pencils (from Tombow): 3H and 4H for drawing, 2B for shading. When you're doing this kind of drawing, getting the values right seems to be more important than in normal painting.
Your work is so incredible Kirsty!
First time watching you, brilliant advise. I draw for my own pleasure just using a pencil, so I'm going to use this tip. Thank you and I'm a sub now.
I had heard a similar tip to use graphite pencils ✏️ to do black and white drawings to get the feel for values, but I like your way better!
Amazing! Don’t know if you said who you were going to draw, as I had the sound off, but recognised her very early on anyway. Michone always looks grumpy, but clearly makes for a good subject to draw and you were spot on with the shading etc.
Michonne!!!! She turned out lovely, like all of your artwork.
