Testing the digital image stabilization on the Canon M6mkII

  • In this video I compare the digital image stabilization found in the Canon M6 mark 2 with optical image stabilization built into the Sony 10-18mm f/4 mounted to the a6400. Although the M6II does digital image stabilization surprisingly well, it turned out to be about the same as the a6400 with stabilization applied in post.
    Here's a link to the specific Steve Mould video I referenced

    I almost never subscribe to channels, but your no-bullshit approach really appeals to me, so I actually made an exception. Too bad you haven't posted for a while, but if you do in the future, you've got a new subscriber at least!

    Thanks Ben, I will be getting my m6 mark 2 this Thursday and can't wait! This video was really helpful as I will probably be using it for vlogging for my dive videos.

    Wow! This is a fantastic review. You nailed it this time! This is the comparison I have been waiting for from the previous video you made on M6 mark 2 vs Sony A6400. Subscribed to you! Awesome! The box test was pretty accurate. By the way, it would be cool to have a low light or nighttime test on both cameras on your next video. Keep up the awesome work :)

    Digital stabilization in camera would be better than post too because when you crop in camera it's still capturing the same amount of detail on the sensor. Where as when you crop in post you have to zoom into footage that was already captured at a wider focal length. Thus losing detail.

    I was curious about this because in Canada the a6400 is $1348 + taxes and the 10-18mm is about $999 making it under $2400 and the m6 mark ii is $999 body only and $459 for the 11-22mm so just under $1600 with taxes for both. Wondering if the quality of the Sony for video is worth the extra $850 ish because those are the lenses I was going to use it primarily for Vlogging. Can't wait to finish this video much love from Vancouver Canada ❤️

      I'd say go with A6400 if you do more than vlogging. It has picture profile, built-in EVF, deeper buffer, sharper 4k, better lens upgrade path.
      The 10-18 is a bit steep for an aps-c lens but it's constant f/4 and goes as wide as 15mm versus 18mm on Canon.

    wow that was really interesting and unexpected with the box text ! Surprising results to me. Seems like maybe some weakness uncovered there?, like it's lagging? Seems if it was faster it would keep the frame more "still", since it is in reality still there (relative to camera). So IS that INDUCES framing instability, hmm. Isn't that what the cropping is suppose to 'pay' for to reduce? Post IS doesn't do that. Not sure what to think of that, too much to try to mentally process about when to use IS and when not too, lol. Seems like there should be a more minimal IS 'stable frame' setting. I wonder if the box test would it be helpful on all IBIS and IS systems, what that be useful?

    What do you rate the canon m6 mark ii overall? Do you suggest buying it or there is a better option? I ordered one 2 days ago but i've read a lot of reviews in which they don't suggest buying it. What's your opinion?

  • @marxfishing
    @marxfishing 4 роки тому +3

    Did the canon digital IS do any weird warpy/jumpy stuff to that image at the edge of the frame? I always felt that digital IS in that m50 made a mess of the footage, and my initial impression was that my M6 II was doing the same, but I may be just paranoid after the m50 experience. I haven’t really given the m6 II digital IS a proper test.

    • @SuperJoePardo
      @SuperJoePardo 4 роки тому

      Shot a wedding over the weekend and had one or two weird jitters in the center of the frame. Not sure if it was because of the digital IS or autofocus changing.

    • @mirrorlessmemory
      @mirrorlessmemory 4 роки тому

      I know this is 5 months late but I finally figured out that “enabled” IS on the M50 is good for forward or backward shots. Panning shots for me had a warpy glitch for me. The “enhanced” mode is meant to mimic a tripod shot when your handheld. So it’s meant for recording a static shot, once you move it will go jello lol

    Question, what If you use a speed booster with m6 11 , will that help reduce the crop in 4K with stabilization?

    • @benbjurstrom
      @benbjurstrom  4 роки тому

      In a way, yes. It's not that the speed booster would reduce the crop caused by the stabilization as that would still apply. Instead it would reduce the 1.6x crop caused by the APS-C sized sensor to about 1.1x.

      @@benbjurstrom Even if the Canon lenses are a lot cheaper? The 11-22 from canon is less than half the price of the Sony 10-18 in my country. Kind of debating between these two cameras, leaning towards the Sony, but the lenses cost a lot more. I can get the bodies for the same price.

    Great video but honestly both of these two cameras suck at stabilization. A gimbal it’s a must.
    Also Sony’s color science looks much better, I don’t know why but Canon’s color isn’t natural.

    • @cooloox
      @cooloox 4 роки тому

      The Canon stabilisation was noticeably better than the optical IS on the Sony, SOOC. As for colour, it varied throughout the video. The colour temperature being applied 'at the time' greatly affects which camera will look better. Canon colour generally looks more pleasing than that of the Sony, but in this partly shade/partly direct light situation the Sony did a better job of varying its white balance.
      Also, unless you're there you cannot even comment on which looked more natural. Human faces can be very pink, more greenish, or anything in between. Grass dramatically varies in shades of green, as do plants and trees.
