Man if she would have been in the Kentucky derby I wonder how she would have done but then we possibly wouldn’t have gotten the mine that bird moment we all love
I loved Rachel Alexandra, and predicted she would end up a Hall of Famer when she won the Kentucky Oaks. It is VERY unlikely she would have done well in the Kentucky Derby (or in the Breeders' Cup Classic). She was a middle distance horse, her best distance was 9 furlongs. She never won at a mile and a quarter. Rachel was lucky to hang on to her Preakness win over a fast closing Mine That Bird at 1 3/16 mile. She lost her only race at 1 1/4 miles, the Personal Ensign at Saratoga, to a filly named Persistently; that was Persistently's sole G1 win. (Persistently did have several placements at that level. Plus Rachel was not the same racehorse at 4 that she had been at 3.) Persistently's time of 2:04:49 for the Personal Ensign was the slowest for that stakes while run at the 10 furlong distance. And you'd have to go back to 1974 for a slower Travers time for the same distance on the same track.
She was done after the Woodward Stakes win to end her 3 year old season. I was at that race and the Personal Ensign the following year and you hit the nail on the head. She was still very good at 4, but nowhere close to the same as she was at 3. This dominant performance, a similar one in the Mother Goose (where no one even showed up because they knew they were running for 2nd), beat the Derby winner in the Preakness, the Belmont winner in the Haskell and older male horses just for good measure to cap it off. We'll never see a 3 year old filly have a season like that again.
Although Short Fields Paid Subscriber Won Her Previous Race by Like 30 Lengths and Rachel Beat Her by 20 Next Out in Mother Goose...Prime Rachel Was Effortlessly "Crushing" Her Comp Like This Oaks...Brilliant Horse
I feel like everytime an exeptional filly touches a track and is undefeated they are.... "EXEPTIONAL SUPER FILLY!!!! QUEEN OF THE RACETRACK!!!" But when an exeptional colt touches a track and is undefeated.... "He could be better....."

She barely hung on to win the Preakness by a length. You don't know she would have won the KY derby against a horse she beat by a length in a shorter race. RA was considered for the Belmont but pulled from consideration. IF Rags to Riches is the benchmark for the very best filly to win the Belmont, RA fails since even Summer Birds 2:27 Belmont was a second faster than Ragz and the 7th fastest Belmont in the past 20 years up until 2009
Rachel blew Summer Bird's doors off later that summer in the Haskell. Granted it was a much shorter race and I don't disagree that 12 furlongs was probably outside of her ability, but I think she could've been a contender in the Derby that year. Calvin rode so much better at Churchill than anywhere else, she ran well in a few races at that track and she was at her best when she rated and stalked. If Calvin could've settled her that year, she would've been there at the end as that Derby did not have a crazy fast pace (I think the opening 1/2 was 47 and change).
