Night Helicopter Flight Over New Orleans with Brooklyn

- Brooklyn joined me for a night flight in the Robinson R-44 over the city of New Orleans. We took off and did a couple of laps around the city before following the Mississippi River to New Orleans International and then back to the Lakefront Airport.

This serves to remind me that, among the many mistakes I've made in life, waiting until after I got married etc. etc. etc. to learn to fly the Hudson & East River Exclusions at night is right up there. That trip would have made for one hell of a date. Instead, I have kids who complain about how boring it is . . .

This tour over the city was absolutely beautiful Mover with all the LED night lights and a pretty girl sitting next to you. Brooklyn is beautiful and the music you chose for this was also beautiful and made the ride even better. You have mastered your Helo flying and is nothing short of outstanding!

Very bright lights around the city cool view. She was either really impressed or you scared the crap out of her with the launch control.
Those were different nights. The launch control thing was an attempted track night weeks earlier.

Mr. Lemoine, I would suppose pushing the envelope of a “modern” fighter jet is something you feel reasonably comfortable with. On a scale of 1 to 10, 1 being least; how much of the Helo envelope do you feel comfortable exploring?

Do you have limitations flying over a city at night in a single engine helo ? In the UK single engine helos must follow prescribed routes over London.

question: how does VFR at night work? Is it only around cities? Can you do it on a full moon? (if there aren't city lights I mean)
You can do it anywhere, given you have the cloud clearance
I guess the more accurate thing to say is you can do it with the allowed ceiling and visibility.

As a former CH-53E crewchief with 7 main rotor blades, I can never get used to a 2-bladed helo. I've flown on 44's before and took a hop on a Huey once and the dual rotor vibration you can see in the video and hear in his voice, I'm spoiled with fully articulating rotor heads. Mover! Find a Guimbal Cabri G2 and you'll never go back to a Robinson.

Great views of the city! Is the ground that pitch black at night from the cockpit during low level flight or is that just the camera's filters?
It was pretty dark, but the human eye is a little better at making out some details.

Cool. Lights of city looked neat. Was that the corvette you launched? I would have been more interested in that then heli. Chicks just don't appreciate the capabilities of the corvette! 😁

It looks absolutely beautiful, but something that has always puzzled me about the USA is that it seems perfectly acceptable to fly over hugely congested areas in SEP helicopters... What is the procedure in the event of an engine failure where you have no safe space to autorotate into?

It’s a shame CW that GoPro cameras do not give Night time a fighting chance. Maybe if you had a Sony A7 With a good low light lens.
I actually do have a Sony A6600 but I'm not attaching that to the tail. 😂
Hope you can get your hands on something turbine powered one of these days. I think you would have a ball in a MD 500 or a ASTAR and everyone needs to fly a Huey at some point.
A standard mile is 0.88 of a nautical mile (5280/6000) Math says you would be going almost 91mph... little bit of a head wind I guess?
Wow! Everything is different in the US: I noticed (you told me) that a special type rating is not necessary to fly different types of H/C as long as they are part of the same category. Now I see you're flying at night with the Robinson so I'm asking the same question: did you go through a dedicated H/C night flight qualification or is it covered by something else?
I know it's not a big deal for you flying at night especially using the main runway for landing, no doubt about it, that's not the point.
But in my little country in Western Europe, although I specialized in night flight in my previous life (I logged about 500 FH at night, "normal", NVG, combat, excluding IFR which is different), I'm not allowed to fly a light aircraft at night in my flying club unless I go through a special course to get a special qualification and then I will have to perform a minimum of night flights per year, and so on ...
Maybe I should consider moving to America (I'm kidding) 😉

Night is part of the Initial syllabus and then you have to maintain currency in order to carry passengers

You have to get three takeoffs and landings in a helicopter at night to be night current. The night training is in a helo as well.
