  • Monitors! We use them every day, but there are many types and varieties of computer displays and monitors. In this video, I explain the fundamentals of computer monitors, the advantages and disadvantages of the various display and panel types, and even include demos.
This is part 2 of this series!
Part 1: • Monitors 101 (Part 1) ... (Introduction and CRT vs LCD)
    Part 3: • Monitors 101 (Part 3) ... (OLED and Self-Emissive Displays)
    Full video: • Monitors Explained! - ...
First, we cover fundamental technologies including CRT, LCD, LED and OLED displays, and next, the varieties of each, including TN, VA and IPS LCD panels, as well as QD-OLED and WOLED varieties.
We investigate the pros and cons of each, including response time, color gamut, motion blue, and text rendering. Also included is a demo of VA vs IPS motion blur, as well as macro images of the pixel layouts of common OLED displays, explaining why some suffer from text fringing and subpixel rendering issues when displaying text.

Thanks very much for a very comprehensive explanation. My monitor just died from years ago & the newer devices are quite different & it was difficult to distinguish the pros & cons. Thanks again!

Yeah, most (but not all) LCD TVs use VA panels - typically BGR instead of RGB as well making it slightly annoying to use as a PC monitor.
MiniLED is the backlight, not the panel, so you can have a monitor with a MiniLED backlight with either a VA or an IPS panel, and there are monitors on the market with both IPS and VA panels that use a MiniLED backlight instead of a traditional side-lit LED backlight.
