  • Can machine learning really do maths? DeepMind & Oxford Mathematicians András Juhász & Marc Lackenby have used machine learning to identify new connections between different branches of knot theory. Here Marc explains their work and its implications for mathematics.
You can read more about the work, and that of University of Sydney mathematician Geordie Williamson's work with DeepMind on representation theory, in this paper in Nature:

Beautiful! Before we get to the "independent" AGI it seems like we'll have some type of a symbiosis between weakling, specialized AIs and humans. AI keeps augmenting our cognitive capabilities more and more. Some other beautiful examples are games (chess/Go players learn from AI nowadays, just to name a few), search, and many more.

This was extremely interesting, to hear about developments in mathematicians using computers as a tool. That's not always the case, and I've heard there is a lot of resistance among mathematicians, to using various computing tools in their work (or at-least the tendency to look down on it as "not real research").
Just some feedback on this format of video: having the questions be text-only is not entirely helpful to those of us who are just listening, and can't look at the screen. I'm only doing my morning exercises while playing youtube videos (so I can't always be looking at the screen), but I would imagine it would be a bigger detriment to someone with a visual impairment.

Point taken re captions and thanks for the feedback. We wait to see how it is received by mathematicians...
