- The latest addition to my growing collection of delightfully dangerous Chinese electrode water boilers. This one is supposedly rated 2.5kW and is rather amusingly sold for heating the water for babies baths.
To be fair, it does suggest unplugging it before putting the baby in, as otherwise you and the baby would have a very loud and violent 50/60Hz family moment.
If you're willing to accept that there is a shock risk from touching the water then the unit would actually be ideal for boiling entire buckets of water. I'm sure you'd probably stick your hand in to feel how hot it was at some point, but electricity would then punish you to ensure you didn't do it again.
Sadly the unit didn't make it much beyond 1kW while being tested, but there is a possibility that the current would increase as the water warmed up and had it's air purged from it resulting in better electrode contact. That certainly happened with the wee 300W cup version featured at the end.

So basically we've concluded that since the babies scream and shit their pants all the time, there would be no noticeable difference if the baby would become live. Looks like that heater is safe after all, at least when used with babies.

You know those IR heaters where they are suppose to save energy by heating you instead of the room?
What if the product is designed to apply that principle to the baby. where you pass the current through the baby, thus heating the baby instead of the bath water. That will save energy while allowing you use cooler water.

+jusb1066 I think the baby would actually be fine unless you touch it. It is completely in the water with no usable path to ground, so the baby should be always at the same potential as the water and therefore safe. No current would flow.
I could be wrong, though, don't try it :P
(The baby probably has a different resistance than the water, so that could potentially cause issues. Dunno :P)
+Yndostrui Usually the drainage pipe will have a ground path. This may help to allow the energy to flow through the baby and keep it warm.
+Razor2048 Well, I was thinking of an actual baby bath (Like a shallow bucket :D) instead of a bath tub. Using this in a bath tub is probably a bad idea...
Using this in a standard bath tub would actually be pretty safe-that's what the GFCI is for.

This brought back memories Clive! I grew up in the 50's in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan and we never had indoor plumbing. We pumped water into buckets and heated the water with a heater called a "Gimmick". A metal oval with holes and you could see the insulated heating coil inside. You just heated the water and then took out the Gimmick, but this is a time when there was no grounded outlets, just a hot and neutral (115 volts at that time). How we never got electrocuted is beyond me.

This reminds me of something my older brother once told me. Decades ago, we bought a vaporizer, made by DeVilbiss (the air compressor company, oddly enough) which consisted of a 2-handled polypropylene jug in seafoam green, with a cylindrical Bakelite contrivance that screwed on top. There was a small hole in the bottom of that to admit water, and another near the top outside, opposite the cheater cord connection to let the steam out.
Dad wondered if it would overheat if it ran out of water, so he took it apart and discovered it was simply a pair of stainless steel electrodes. Once the water was steamed away, the circuit was open! Simplicity itself. I think my brother still has it. There's literally nothing to wear out or fail.

Try it with water with some salt in it. The salt will hugely increase the conductivity.
Fun thing about stainless steel, the magnetic whatchamacallit isn't just affected by the alloy but the crystalline structure of the metal. I picked up some 316l ball bearings online recently and decided to check if the were magnetic and they were but halfway through writing my angry email to the seller I decided to do some research.
Apparently the work hardening that happens during the polishing phase can also cause a portion of the metal to enter a more magnetic crystalline structure, rather than the nonmagnetic austenite structure of most 300 series ss. So having learned that I went out to the garage and found my old steel bb pellets of unknown province and sure enough they were MUCH more magnetic than the ss of the same approximate size.
One thing. . when you are heating water for a baby. . .surely you TEST the temperature every now and then with your hand of a male person (because females seem to have much too high tolerance for high temperature water)

What i ment is women have this water heat thing, when a woman prepares bath for herself that is right temperature, for generic male [and babies] it feels much to hot for comfort. While water temperature that feels comfortable for men feels just warm for women.

This has to be one of the absolutely most dangerous items I've ever seen on Clive's channel. I can't imagine why anyone would want or need such a thing.
I can only imagine some poor couple in a developing country who has no hot water heater for the house and thinks this would be a faster way to heat the bath for their newborn. Possibly they haven't had a decent education and so don't fully appreciate the danger. They're going to give baby a bath in the sink, stick this thing is while the water is still running, then reach to turn off the tap and baby loses a parent.
The primary market I see for this device are exactly the people who can least withstand the tragedy but are most likely to have a life full of tragedy. It's kind of infuriating honestly.

Heat makes molecules more "mobile" so yes hot solutions have higher conductivity.
On the other hand it rises the resistance.

when Clive plugs a electrode heater in you always see a pattern of low power when cold, steadily rising power when heating until the first boiling occurs than it drops off.

That's due to the laws of superconductivity. Items with higher temperatures have higher resistances. This is why superconductors are always cooled......

it wouldn't explain the current rising when the temperature rises.

Yes the idea of heating water that way is madness but perhaps the local people in china have more sense to follow rules, unlike the daft buggers here. :)
its not really hard using a big container and aluminium foil. you could easily build a 20kw heater like that.

Nice demo.. I'd throw a couple of hot dogs in there to see if they cook. I'd also use a probe thermometer to find out how hot the water gets too. I best most of these are imported to third world countries to help population control.
