@@HviteVinger An undocumented change in the G9 firmware was a bump in 1080p bitrate from 28mbps to 100mbps. There are now also FHD 4:2:2 10bit codecs (also not mentioned). Still not up to the capabilities of the GH5 but a much more well rounded camera all the same.
Excellent. Just ordered a G9 so when it arrives I will apply the update and purchase the V-LOG upgrade. Been waiting for a year for the G9 to come down in price. Panasonic makes great cameras, but always too expensive for me until they drop the prices. Will look for your instructions on how to use the V-LOG.

You’re going to have to give me a lot more info to help you, but honestly every time this doesn’t work it’s because someone slipped a step. Watch the video again or read the Panasonic page and follow it step by step.
In photo mode yes it’ll work but like any profile it only applies to jpeg. But if you were shooting stills on a set and wanted them to match the V-Log footage, that’d work. Some apps will even let you apply a LUT to a photo.
For a technology company like Panasonic to require this vlog activation code to be physically mailed is shocking, especially since you can order it online. Even from a green planet standpoint, negative marks. (Besides that thank-you Panasonic for this powerful firmware update!)
I appreciate this video. I downloaded the firmware for the DC G9 but it keeps saying its unable to expand on my Mac Book Pro computer. It says its unsupported. How do I open the file in this case? Thanks
Sounds like you’re trying to expand the .bin file. What you’re downloading is a .zip that contains a .bin. If you see a .bin then it’s already expanded.
Hey there, sorry for the delay. I got this same question twice in a couple of days and wanted to be sure I had a good answer. It is designed for scenes where you have a bright spot, such as a play on a theater stage. The metering mode looks at the brightest parts of the scene, and builds the exposure for that. If you used center weighted it'd calculate the shadows in too much, and multi-zone metering would likely as well. This basically tells the camera that the brightest part of the scene is what it should expose for.

I don't, and here's why… I change my settings ALL THE TIME. I found that I'm constantly adjusting my C memory settings, how I configure the camera, etc. for nearly every shoot. Having one "base line" just doesn't work for me anymore, sorry! So I think what I provided way-back-when is a good starting point.
Hello, Joseph. At first, I'd like to thank you for your great videos and reviews. At second, I consider you as an expert, so I have one question. I have Lumix G85, American model, obviously. I live in Serbia, and I shoot in 50Hz region. In my camera, there are only 24. 30 and 60fps settings, and as I know, no shutter angle setting, which give me serious flickering issue under artificial light. Is there some solution for that? Can I apply Australian or Hong Kong firmware on my camera? Will I get the variety of settings of that region's camera, or will I ruin the camera? Greetings.
Hey there, thanks for the complements! Sadly no, you can’t. If there’s a “jailbreak” option I’m not familiar with it and of course wouldn’t recommend it. That said though to avoid the flicker just shoot at 1/50 (or 1/48) instead of 1/60. That should solve it. I was waiting for this G9 firmware update so much because of the 10-bit video feature, but it turns out that 10bit is only available in MOV codec, and the free version of Resolve 16 doesn´t support it. Dang! Spending 300€ for the Studio version of Resolve because of one feature is not very tempting...
Joseph, I just got an S1 with 1.10 firmware--and I can't find the 1.2 firmware update. All I see is the 1.3 on the Panasonic site. Is there any problem with me skipping the intermediary update and just installing 1.3???

Did you enable it? It has its own setting in Peaking options. It doesn’t work quite the way I was hoping unfortunately. It only works while the camera is focusing in AF-S mode.

Dear Jospeh, Is the Panasonic Image App still usable when the new firmware is installed? Are all new features for the G9 automatically included in the app or will there be an update soon for the app as well?
You know, I haven’t tried yet. I doubt the old app will connect but haven’t tried. The new app, “LUMIX Sync”, has been great for the S1 but I haven’t compared features. Is there a specific feature you need? I could check on Monday

Do you think, that at some point, Panasonic will make anamorphic recording accessible for the S1 as well? It's such a bummer for filmmakers who recently bought the S1, when Panasonic released the S1H shortly after it. Trying to sell the S1 or trade it in for the S1H is not reasonable due to the price politics of Panasonic.
No, I don’t. But I also don’t understand the sentiment. You bought an S1 which did not have anamorphic support. If you needed anamorphic, then the S1 wasn’t the camera for you. Now that there’s another camera (the S1H) with anamorphic support, you want that feature, but it’s for that camera. You need to buy the camera that has the feature, sorry. I understand you’re bummed, but the camera you bought didn’t lose any features. You must have felt it suited your needs when you bought it; if your needs changed, then the camera must change to go with it.
@@photojoseph Yes I have VFR enabled as I want to choose higher fps like 48 or 60 for slow motion. After the update all the Rec quality modes all have 24p only. I feel silly I can't work this out. Hey Joseph, Having trouble with Lumix Tether 2.1. I completed the version update to 2.6 for my G9 thinking that was the issue, however it does not work. I believe the issue is that my machine is running windows 11. Can you please advise if Lumix Tether 2.1 is currently working for windows 11?

I entered into the service mode on my lumix g9 to see the image count and now I’m stuck in service mode and a yellow triangle shows every time I turn the camera off. Do you know how to turn it off or can you put me in contact with someone who can help with that. Panasonic does not have a good customer service
I don't know offhand, but Panasonic has fine customer service - have you tried calling them? If they give you grief about being in service mode… well, that mode isn't designed for users so expect a little grief about going there ;-)
Andras Varga-Fekete if you’re an iOS user, add the manual to Books, and you can add bookmarks, highlights and notes. That’s what I do with all user guides.
Is the G9 compatible with Elgato Camlink 4k for streaming? It has clean hdmi output but in the official Elgato compatible cameras it only lists the GH5 and not the G9, which seems weird. Could the 30 minute record limit be the reason?
That is odd. I haven’t use the ElGato but it’s hard to imagine any reason that it wouldn’t work. The 30 minute limit only applies to internal recording; any of these cameras can be connected to HDMI and left on indefinitely. I vote it’d work fine. As always… but from somewhere you can easily return it!
My G9 does not have the STD menu for selecting VLOG ???? The VLOG update is installed. How the hell do you select VLOG anywhere ... it is doing my head in. I can't instructions how to do it anywhere.

@photojoseph hey Joseph, long time no talk. I'm finally back on the Panasonic horse and using my GH5. Well I went to go update it just now with v2.6 and right in the middle of updating the camera just shut off. I thought it was part of the update, but after a few minutes I turned the camera off then on only to realize to my horror that the entire menu is now gibberish of letters and symbols and I can't use the camera. It keeps shutting itself off. Is there ANY way to do a reset on the camera without the menu? like a 'insert this firmware, power on the camera and it will auto install over the corrupt firmware'?? Any info at all you could help with this would be appreciate I REALLY don't wanna have to send my camera in to Panasonic to have them reset it....grrrrrr thanks

It’s an option under the peaking settings.

Hi Joaquin the latest firmware 1.4 also updates all previous firmware updates you don’t have to do this individually

What do you mean “no auto focus mode”. It’s greyed out? That probably means you have VFR enabled.

@@theyachtchefs turn off VFR. You don’t get AF in VFR.
Oh and if all you see is 24p then you switched into 24Hz cinema mode. You need to go back to 60Hz or 50Hz modes.

I called the Pansonic site - they said no Vlog fiemware for G9. Not sure the Vlog L sfu1 will work with the G9?
You were given incorrect information. Did you watch this video? I literally installed the firmware update and V-Log on the G9. Watch it, please.

@@photojoseph Thanks...I'm trying to figure out if my lens (Lumix 12-35mm) firmware is current. It shows version 1.0 in my camera. Just upgraded the camera to 2.6 successfully. I'm not seeing this lens firmware on Panasonic's list of available firmware updates, so I guess I'm OK. I just got the camera, so I'm unfamiliar with everything about it. I really appreciate your videos...huge help!

Hey Joseph, Having trouble with Lumix Tether 2.1. I completed the version update to 2.6 for my G9 thinking that was the issue, however it does not work. I believe the issue is that my machine is running windows 11.
Can you please advise if Lumix Tether 2.1 is currently working for windows 11?
The download page just lists windows 10 av.jpn.support.panasonic.com/support/global/cs/soft/download/d_lumixtether.html

The GH5S came with V-Log installed, but even on GH5 if you have V-Log, the update won’t remove it.

@@photojoseph figured it out. If you have High Sierra as your mac OS, the drag and drop won't work for some reason. Had to use a different computer with Mojave
Hi Sir I Have question. I recently bought Lumix s1 whole kit was cost me 5000$ with vlog. But I'm disappointed why s1 doesn't have FHD 120p with Audio Autofocus. All other manufacturers Offering this. Like sony A7iii Canon R. As ambassador r you able reach lumix about this. greatly appreciate that

Hey I really hope you reply I need you help. I entered into the service mode on my lumix g9 to see the image count and now I’m stuck in service mode and a yellow triangle shows every time I turn the camera off. Do you know how to turn it off or can you put me in contact with someone who can help with that. Panasonic does not have a good customer service
I don't know offhand, but Panasonic has fine customer service - have you tried calling them? If they give you grief about being in service mode… well, that mode isn't designed for users so expect a little grief about going there ;-)

Yes all the bells and whistles. I wish these manuals would be more user friendly, but I can find my way around
Andras Varga-Fekete if you’re an iOS user, add the manual to Books, and you can add bookmarks, highlights and notes. That’s what I do with all user guides.
Is the G9 compatible with Elgato Camlink 4k for streaming? It has clean hdmi output but in the official Elgato compatible cameras it only lists the GH5 and not the G9, which seems weird. Could the 30 minute record limit be the reason?
That is odd. I haven’t use the ElGato but it’s hard to imagine any reason that it wouldn’t work. The 30 minute limit only applies to internal recording; any of these cameras can be connected to HDMI and left on indefinitely. I vote it’d work fine. As always… but from somewhere you can easily return it!

My G9 does not have the STD menu for selecting VLOG ???? The VLOG update is installed. How the hell do you select VLOG anywhere ... it is doing my head in. I can't instructions how to do it anywhere.
You updated AND installed SFU1 for V-Log? Make sure you’re in movie mode. It’s only available there.

@photojoseph hey Joseph, long time no talk. I'm finally back on the Panasonic horse and using my GH5. Well I went to go update it just now with v2.6 and right in the middle of updating the camera just shut off. I thought it was part of the update, but after a few minutes I turned the camera off then on only to realize to my horror that the entire menu is now gibberish of letters and symbols and I can't use the camera. It keeps shutting itself off. Is there ANY way to do a reset on the camera without the menu? like a 'insert this firmware, power on the camera and it will auto install over the corrupt firmware'?? Any info at all you could help with this would be appreciate I REALLY don't wanna have to send my camera in to Panasonic to have them reset it....grrrrrr thanks
