Growing up in rural south Texas this particular model of Ford was popular with ranchers and farmers because they were reliable and tough. The sedans were quiet and seemed to be solid, whereas the hardtops that I rode in rattled.
Factory air conditioning vented out above the dash, blew in your face, dried out the eyes, while the lower torso was warm. I'm guessing that's why Ford moved the vents lower.
