If I see an emergency vehicle without sirens or flashing lights, I usually get them to pass anyway because I'm paranoid that they'll get an emergency call while they're following me and we'll be in traffic too heavy for me to yield immediately.

Paranoia doesn't belong on the road. You'll create more problems by randomly letting people pass when it isn't necessary! Just stay the course until they ACTUALLY get a call.
Speaking as a firefighter and first responder, all emergency personnel across the whole United States knows you are NOT allowed to pass on the right because when people see an emergency vehicle coming, they automatically hit their brake and pull to the right. If you go to the right in an emergency situation or are running lights, and go to the right and there is an accident, it is automatically the fault of the emergency vehicle driver. When lights are on, sirens must be on (in Arkansas). The only exception to this rule is the police in super special situations after given permission per dispatch, and only then can or will they be allowed to run lights without siren. Also, recognize that when lights and siren are running, you are merely asking for permission to go by and are not allowed to just "run" red lights, or blow by people in a dangerous manner and whatnot. The rule to remember is, the house was burning before the call came in, you wrecking or getting killed on the way is not worth it because then it creates another scene for first responders to have to respond to. If someone is sick or dying (for ambo drivers), your life is not worth their life. Drive quickly but safely and follow normal emergency vehicle rules. In this video, the emergency ambo vehicle driver was changing many lanes and driving right and left and passing on the right and was virtually all over the place. Again, if an accident occurred, this would be on the ambo driver not the citizen driver. If an accident occurred, not only could the citizen driver sue the hell out of the ambo company, but the hospital attached to it, and of course the driver of the ambo, and you would lose and they would get a big ass check right alongside the person in your ambo that will now also sue you because you didn't follow national emergency vehicle driving laws and rules. All emergency vehicle safety courses will always always tell you to stay left and never ever go to the right and if you go left beyond a double line, you do so at your own risk (and everyone elses) and will not be protected in a court of law. In fact, if a police officer sees you doing it, you can get a ticket for it. If you follow too closely and you ass end somebody, it will also be the ambo driver's fault because everyone knows when citizens see lights, the first thing they do is hit the brake, and then move to the right. As far as speed is concerned, you are only allowed 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. Go over that, and you can lose your emergency vehicle rights to drive an emergency vehicle. The only time this vehicle should have went right is to get off at the exit. Stay left and if there is a problem then you get the license plate of the offender and turn it in. If this video had been of an ambo driver staying left, and the other people not moving to the right, it would have been acceptable, but since the ambo driver was all over the road, you just showed how NOT to drive an emergency vehicle.
Agreed, the one time that it would be good to pass in the right lane is in heavy traffic like seen at 6:00, of course, ALL warning devices should be activated (Lights, Siren, Horn, Rumbler if you have it) and the driver should slow down and use extreme caution. Because like it was mentioned some people will pull to the right and cut you off. However, as long as you go slow, and give drivers a plethora of warning devices, most people figure it out and stay where they are.
Take this video to the police department, use the license plates and start mailing out "failure to yield" tickets. Once you start taking people's money, they will start moving.
As a long retired fire captain and former ambulance and rescue guy, I have a few thoughts for discussion. There are way too many failure to yield incidents and accidents. Because ambulances typically run more code trips they have greater risk. In my day we were just getting the first Paramedics and telemetry to bring the ER to the scene. In my experience about 70% of calls were not life-threatening to start, then of the remainder 20% could be stabilized at the scene reducing the need for a grab and run code 3 to the hospital. 10% were genuine code 3 to the hospital. I see today in, California, ambulances by the hundreds screaming to the hospital with broken bones, lacerations, nosebleeds, hemorrhoids and other non life issues only to drop the patient for a 4 hour wait at the ER. It seems to me that we could eliminate a lot of risk to first-responders and citizens by eliminating un-necessary code runs from the scene to hospital. Also car makers have all kinds of warning electronics, auto stop, lane departure, etc. Why not install electronics to "listen" for sirens and alert the driver? Modern cars are built to squelch outside noise and many drivers are distracted or just stupid. I know we cannot fix stupid but there are some things we could do. Lastly, new electronic sirens just don't command the attention of the old Q sirens :)
Capt Gary Really, Code 3 to hospital with non life threatening injuries? How the hell can the paramedics clinically justify that? I used to always ask Comms when responding to a haemorrhoid job if there were any "updates"-"date" is slang in Australia for anus.
In California, ambulances can only got code 3 for life threatening injuries, uncontrolled bleeding, or potential loss of limb/disability. Company policy can dictate it further than that. If you listen to the medic scanner, you'll hear the report they give to base on the way to the hospital, which would include their reason for running code 3. If a medic calls in they're on their way to the ER code 3 with a person who has a minor laceration, I'm sure their supervisor will be getting notified.
In Ohio, the law is lights on the siren on. I worked with an individual who went to jail driving an ambulance, went thru an intersection and killed a woman and her unborn fetus. He drove thru the intersection she came along his right side and was blocked by a truck for visibility and drove into the intersection as he went thru. One factor against him was the speed he went thru the intersection. The judge (hanging judge)told the jury find him guilty of a misdemeanor he will be convicted of a felony and that's what happened. Two to ten yrs in prison. It took two yrs and congress to get him released, but a precedent had been set. It was so bad that a firefighter had a trial where he was a witness. he was on a working fire, the chief left a working fire to take him to court. He was ten minutes late, they get cited for contemppt of court, threatened with jail and a fine. Remember when u use lights and siren your are ASKING for permision to enter that intersection or trying to get around that vehicle. It's not automatic.
Most states it’s also a law that they have the right of way when lights and or sirens are on. And failure to yield is also jail and fine. Some smaller city’s will often run rolling stings where they stop people just for not stopping. A heavy 500 buck ticket and up to 6 months
@@bustering7991 No, the emergency vehicle does not have the right away until it is yielded. Yes, the other diver is required to yield the right of way but the EV doesn't automatically have it, in Ohio law.
Robert McLennan in Chicago private ambulances only do transfers and special events. I can tell it's private because the FD ones here use EQ2Bs. So it's probably a transfer between hospitals.
Okay two scenarios to consider 1. Responding to a call - yes people should see the lights especially at night but a lot of drivers don't know what the rear view mirror is there for so use of siren prior to being on someone's bumper helps warn other motorists. In the U.K. We are told to change siren on approach to hazard as the changing of the siren helps focus motorists attention 2. Taking in a priority - by activating the siren earlier it would provide a more comfortable journey for the patient and your crewmate in the back especially in a Chevy which before you ask I have worked in. It is interesting to look at the difference to the ways people respond to emergency vehicles and I will say hats of to the Germans and South Koreans that lead the way. In German it is also a legal requirement to have a first aid kit inter vehicle and you must surrender it if requested - the officer gives you a voucher to get a replacement. I saw the "Blatant" @16:15. The single-lane transition ramp @9:10 probably had enough room for the cars to pull to the right & stop. But the alternative is a few people stopping in the middle of the lane, saying "I don't know what to do! The Gov't needs to save me!"
What sucks is that there is no laws that state an ambulance must be yielded to. This is in Illinois and my friend who trained to be a paramedic, he was even told that cars do NOT have to get over for them. Illinios classifies Emergency Vehicles as only Police and Fire. Ambulances are not an immediate requirement since the majority of the Ambulance movements are just transporting. However everyone still gets over because it's the right thing to do.
I am a retired volunteer firefighter/EMT of eight years. I drove a squad for most of those years. The driver of this ambulance is negligent. My first assumption is he was dispatched on a code 3 call. If this is correct he was negligent because: 1) he did not favor driving in the leftmost lane (except for making freeway exits); and, 2) during most of the video he did not activate his siren (code 3 means lights AND siren). The purpose of the siren is to help give advance warning to drivers. If I were the driver's supervisor I would have written him up, put him on probation and put him back in training. His behavior confuses drivers. This contributes to accidents. One last observation: what's with the music? He should not be distracted by anything.... This is a prime example of a poor ambulance driver and his partner (if in the cab). He is a discrace.
I'm a volunteer firefighter in the great state if Tennessee and yes alot of drivers don't want to yield the right of way because it's inconvenient to them they don't care if we are responding to some one who is dying or a 10-50 10-50 is fire code for motor vehicle accident but when they need us or their family needs us they will bitch and complain about how long it took us to get on scene
I think the ambulance in the beginning didn’t give enough notice when entering the intersection. I would have had my sirens on about 50 ft back no matter the code of call , just to be sure.
No wonder so many people die in Chicago. If you had to wait that long for an Ambulance to get to you I can understand why the mortality rate is so high.

The purpose of the motorcycle medics is to get a trained emergency responder with advanced gear such as a defibrillator to the location faster. In events like cardiac arrest or stroke minutes count and if you can get someone to the victim earlier they have a much higher rate of survival.
that was the worst use of sirens I've ever witnessed. Listen, in cities and on crowed highways the lack of use of that siren is irresponsible and bordering on negligence... lights just don't do it... tinted windows, glare of the excessively bright LED units nowadays makes siren use an absolute.

In situations where traffic can't move or there's just no way for you to get through we are often taught (depending on the typical traffic you deal with) that it's better to just shut the lights off, then turn them on when there is an opportunity to pass. Ambulances sit higher than regular cars and often have grille lights, blinding the driver in front of them while there's nothing hw can do to move
Well driven but a LONG trip. When I drove in southern MS the police would push people off the road if they held us up or failed to move. Not often, but when it's really serious it's needed.

Maybe I just didn't look hard enough, but I couldn't find anything here "alarming" as some comments might suggest (happy to have something pointed out in this clip though). Seems to be a lot of variation in the U.S. with ambulance driving procedures. In Australia we call Code 3 Code 1. Our code 2 is no lights/siren. Our policy is "use discretion" when using the siren. Sure it's going to be on in heavy traffic, but 3 a.m. in a deserted street?-nah! I'm sure every emergency vehicle driver will relate to this bit-no matter how many lights and sirens are on, you're going to get drivers who make you think you're invisible when the lights/siren go on. "Code 3, Mr. Sulu. Pedal to the metal and activate the cloaking shield"......something like that!
Why does the USA even have code 2? the most pointless and useless thing for emergency services..cant moan at people when you just strap lights on with no sirens and only play it when you're literally right there giving them a second to hear/see you coming? end of the day sirens should be played along with lights to make it safe for everyone..blasting a air horn at people instantly when you pull to a intersections expecting a 1 second response is stupid. First of all most state laws are if the emergency lights are activated the siren has to be also, plus all emergency vehicles are supposed to travel in the left lane on a multi lane road
Douglas Pearce thats actually not always true per policy.... some emergency vehicles turn the sirens off in residential areas later at night but keep the lights on ... thats what our fire dept does depending on the call... no point in waking up the whole neighborhood over a general illness.
This happens in every state... People don't respect anyone and feel they are the only and most important person on the road. There needs to be a sticker law/punishment for people not pulling their heads out of their asses and getting out of the way!

First of all get in the left lane and stay there. The law is that vehicles have to pull to the right to yield to emergency vehicles. They can't do that if you're in the right lane. 2nd use that siren before the intersections to give the other motorists enough notice. Don't just tweak the siren. 3rd even in an ambulance you still have to stop at stop signs.
I really can't believe some of you people commenting. Read your road rules. They don't have to use sirens. Everyone is to automatically move over to allow any vehicle with flashing lights to get by them. That's why they have the flashing lights. You don't wait until they are on your ass either the moment you see them even if they are a big distance behind you move over. Kind of the same question. I'm stationed in Greenville South Carolina and we are required if we have lights on but we have to have siren on as well. Just curious as to what your requirements are and where you were stationed?
What happened to the traffic law of pulling over to the side and coming to a full and complete stop for an emergency vehicle? Is that only optional in this city?
all you need to do is not impede their progress, no need for complete stop on the side of the road or especially no need for the idiots to stop on the opposite side of the road. just get out the emergency vehicles way and everybody's happy, law or no law. that complete stop thing is totally unnecessary and not part of any law anywhere ive lived, several states, and i checked, was law in previous places but many have been amended, even if it hasnt been amended, no officer will ever try to enforce that, only one thing is important, 'get out of the way'.
I am former leo and I am sorry I saw no blatant failure to yield. Intermediate lights and siren do not vaporize the other vehicles on the road. People have to see the emergency vehicle then have time to react with safety so they do not cause another wreck.
Alright. This is a great example of unprofessional, untrained, and amateur driving. I'm not 100% positive as to where this video originates from and my state does not use "codes" as to how we are responding. In the U.S., especially NJ, you are supposed to be CEVO III certified to be recognized as a trained driver of an ambulance. If they are responding code 2, they should have used sirens more often as they only decided to chirp the sirens when approaching cars or as they are running through a red traffic light. Appropriate training would have taught you that use of siren is supposed to be initiated approximately 200-300ft while approaching an intersection, and roughly 100ft while approaching other vehicles. As an ambulance driver, you are REQUIRED BY LAW to abide by traffic laws, regardless of situation. There are instances when an illegal U-Turn, wrong way, and other laws can be bent. However, you are not above the law. Speeding is speeding, and you are risking your life, your crew's lives, and the lives of those around you by excessive speeding, especially with an ambulance. Studies have shown that while using lights and sirens, ambulance drivers subconsciously speed up. As drivers, we all go above the speed limit when responding to a serious call; however, a smart driver will not risk the lives of others. You are required to drive with DUE REGARD, by law. Yes, many of these cars failed to yield to an emergency vehicle, which is horrific. However, whatever call these "medics" were responding to was roughly 17 minutes away from their location. That's a public safety hazard, as well as a public health hazard. This video is such a joke.
While I agree on the rather unprofessional driving habits in this video, I'm indeed very happy that the code 3 driving culture over here in Germany differs to what you have described. In the place where I have learned, it was pretty common (at least when it was safe to do so) to drive way faster, sometimes even twice the limit which is posted. In case there wasn't any speed limit we pushed the ambulance to the top speed. Also running red traffic lights is pretty common here: often with only slowing down,sometimes without slowing down, sometimes also without siren usage. The rate of accidents with emergency vehicles involved is still very very low btw
What I do see here is you not getting your ass in the left lane and confusing the hell out all the drivers so they're not clear what you want them to do. I see this all the time and then the winning begins about drivers not yielding.
They shouldn't be allowed to operate a emergency vehicle. They should be fined and fired from their job. Ambulances and fire trucks are limited to top speeds. I believe (last time I checked) they're only allowed 15 or 20mph faster than the posted maximum speed (limit).
we need to find a way to have a string of cops to occasionally follow ambulances when they can and give daily news broadcasted tickets to these people that have so darn much trouble changing lanes when an emergency vehicle approaches them. Emergency vehicle or not there is just no excuse for this unbelievably poor driving and this inability to change lanes within a reasonable amount of time. In my opinion if an emergency vehicle can catch up to you before you get all the way to the right most emergency Lane then you should be suspended from driving for a month and the 2nd time three months suspension. by the third time this happens you should be suspended indefinitely. there is just no excuse for such poor reflexes or such a high level of difficulty while driving.
Jess Vagnar O tickets in the mail don't work. for all types of legal reasons tickets in the mail just don't work. From legal arguments of you can't prove it was that person driving to arguments that a fixed position video from a camera mounted to a pole doesn't get enough of the inappropriate action. Tickets in the mail almost always get argued in court and that gets expensive. Hospital and ambulance services being tied to law enforcement have endless safety and health issues and of course also trust issues, so you can't have law enforcement put a dash camera in the ambulance (which really is the best solution I think) also the most important reason for having a string of cop cars works well because one person getting pulled over is observed by dozens of other drivers whereas a thousand tickets in the mail doesn't let anybody else committing that same crime see that you got pulled over for this or for that. but if you and I are driving the same and I see you get pulled over ahead of me or behind me then I become more conscious of what I'm doing and more important the ticket in the mail doesn't educate people. When they get a ticket in the mail they just say "no, the ticket is a mistake" and that's that when a cop pulls you over and physically says, look I've been behind you for a quarter-mile, how do you justify you were paying so little attention that you couldn't see me and think that you don't deserve a ticket. Or that you did see me but for a quarter-mile you couldn't get your car pulled over in the span of a freaking quarter mile? The point is cops telling you exactly what you did wrong and what they expected has more impact than just getting tickets in the mail. And a line of cops causes people to ask questions about why they were there and that's an immensely more efficient method of word getting out. They started doing this with school buses where they will take a lot of cop cars and make very very obvious that they're having Zero Tolerance of people passing stopped school buses with lights flashing. This multi-car method is having lots of word-of-mouth impact and lots of actual real world result of people ceasing to pass school buses in our area where is tickets in the mail or some automated system doesn't do anything to deter the crime for anyone other than those few that get caught.

If you had your sirens on people would move out of the way probably your suppose to have them on anyways when responding to an emergency. So that people are aware of your presence... so you don't cause another accident.
Not stupid. That was an emergent transfer of a psychiatric patient to a more appropriate facility than where they were brought to by the fire department. My videos start after departure and before arrival in an effort to protect the privacy of both our patient and any other patients that could be caught in the video
I have a issue with this, when you have traffic to deal with you runn that siren no matter what, these short bursts do NOTHING when you are running with lights you run that siren !

Why in the world would you go south on the Dan Ryan? You started at State St. just north of Cermak, then decide to take a little sight-seeing tour past Sox Park before heading back north and into the worst congestion in the city. Anyone who drives in Chicago knows you would NEVER go through the Jane Byrne interchange if you're in a hurry. Why not just stay on State where you started and then go due west on Roosevelt?? With flashing lights, that would have saved you about ten minutes!
To my knowledge, if responding code 3 the sirens are required to be used every time. Code 2 is lights only, even in Chicago. Better figure out how to keep that siren going if you expect people to move.

Used in burglary and break in calls so as not to alert thieves of police presence. If a cop or other emergency vehicle is driving with no lights or sirens, they're not "responding" to any calls as far as the general motoring public is concerned. They may be transporting non emergency, such as moving someone from one hospital to another or suspect transport to a jail or another jurisdiction. Any life threatening call requires code 3 response with sirens. I have friends and family members in both law enforcement and fire/emt fields. So don't try to lecture me on a goddamn thing because I know very well what code responses are required

Which mean light AND SIRENS REQUIRED. Some areas with massive population density, such as downtown Chicago and New York City allow for Code 2 during night hours or in light traffic. But if transporting a gunshot wound victim, stroke or heart attack patient or anything else considered life threatening, code 3 is REQUIRED. Same for fire engines responding to a fire call. You obviously have no knowledge of how and when to use Code 2 and 3.
Corn Fed Do you even know what the signal code "10-8" means? 10-8 means IN-SERVICE or AVAILABLE for calls. 10-17 means RESPONDING or EN-ROUTE. Why don't you learn what codes and signals actually mean before you dictate to somebody about it.
Corn Fed, in my area 10-8 means available and 10-17 means enroute. Hmm maybe that's why after 9/11 FCC made the mandate that everyone use PLAIN ENGLISH instead of signals and codes... just something to consider and think about.
Almost everywhere in Europe if the lights are on, the siren has to be on. If the siren is off no1 has to give way. But when both of them are on everybody have to clear the way and stop, not continue driving. The only country i've seen people driving with the ambulace or even faster tham it is the UK (but they are the Japan of Europe and not talking only about driving; everything there is on the japan-weird level). And what the hell is this to drive only 10mph above the limit ?! Dafuq? If i've bust my Femoral artery i'd want to be driven to the ER asap, not crawling at 70km/h on a clear road cos the ambulance can't go any faster....
Well, it's not unusual that emergency vehicles on German highways get passed as well. The fire trucks might hit 100 kph, but even when an ambulance is able to reach 160 to 170 kph, there are still some people which are driving faster; As long as they are passing me when its safe to do so, I don't have a problem with it; Concerning lights + sirens: in order to have the right of way, we have to use both, but we may switch off the siren on our own risk when there's no relevant traffic ahead

Just read a lot of the comments made. No matter what the reason for this ambulance to be traveling with lights or sirens on the rules state in every country to move out of the way for this vehicle to have a clear run to its destination. I watch a lot of these clips and I will say this is the worst I have seen from America and the attitude of the comments are showing the selfishness attitudes Americans have today.
We should all have our licenses taken away and only certain ones should be allowed to get the license back it is appalling how many people think that putting on their brakes is more beneficial to you than getting out of your way. we don't deserve to drive we're too stupid

In my county, we pay a property tax to maintain the buildings and equipment but get billed for any transport to the hospital. The County EMS agency sells a free ride insurance policy for $160 a year. The transports charge mileage just like a taxi with surcharges for level of care. My wife, in a moment of delirium/anxiety requested to be taken to the hospital where her doctor works rather than the closest hospital. It cost us $800 for 8 miles. We did not have the free ride policy. As a prior EMT Basic, I understand how different agencies can work.

Since they are recording it all just levy a fine against all those vehicle owners for failing to yield. After a while everybody will know that they mean business and get the fuck out of the way in the future.
Was that to the hospital or to the patient? Seems extremely slow for an initial code 3 response...looks more like code 2. But what do I as an european know about american ambulances. However in case something happened to me I would prefer the faster but safe european way.

If I see an emergency vehicle without sirens or flashing lights, I usually get them to pass anyway because I'm paranoid that they'll get an emergency call while they're following me and we'll be in traffic too heavy for me to yield immediately.

Speaking as a firefighter and first responder, all emergency personnel across the whole United States knows you are NOT allowed to pass on the right because when people see an emergency vehicle coming, they automatically hit their brake and pull to the right. If you go to the right in an emergency situation or are running lights, and go to the right and there is an accident, it is automatically the fault of the emergency vehicle driver. When lights are on, sirens must be on (in Arkansas). The only exception to this rule is the police in super special situations after given permission per dispatch, and only then can or will they be allowed to run lights without siren. Also, recognize that when lights and siren are running, you are merely asking for permission to go by and are not allowed to just "run" red lights, or blow by people in a dangerous manner and whatnot. The rule to remember is, the house was burning before the call came in, you wrecking or getting killed on the way is not worth it because then it creates another scene for first responders to have to respond to. If someone is sick or dying (for ambo drivers), your life is not worth their life. Drive quickly but safely and follow normal emergency vehicle rules. In this video, the emergency ambo vehicle driver was changing many lanes and driving right and left and passing on the right and was virtually all over the place. Again, if an accident occurred, this would be on the ambo driver not the citizen driver. If an accident occurred, not only could the citizen driver sue the hell out of the ambo company, but the hospital attached to it, and of course the driver of the ambo, and you would lose and they would get a big ass check right alongside the person in your ambo that will now also sue you because you didn't follow national emergency vehicle driving laws and rules. All emergency vehicle safety courses will always always tell you to stay left and never ever go to the right and if you go left beyond a double line, you do so at your own risk (and everyone elses) and will not be protected in a court of law. In fact, if a police officer sees you doing it, you can get a ticket for it. If you follow too closely and you ass end somebody, it will also be the ambo driver's fault because everyone knows when citizens see lights, the first thing they do is hit the brake, and then move to the right. As far as speed is concerned, you are only allowed 10 miles per hour over the speed limit. Go over that, and you can lose your emergency vehicle rights to drive an emergency vehicle. The only time this vehicle should have went right is to get off at the exit. Stay left and if there is a problem then you get the license plate of the offender and turn it in. If this video had been of an ambo driver staying left, and the other people not moving to the right, it would have been acceptable, but since the ambo driver was all over the road, you just showed how NOT to drive an emergency vehicle.
Agreed, the one time that it would be good to pass in the right lane is in heavy traffic like seen at 6:00, of course, ALL warning devices should be activated (Lights, Siren, Horn, Rumbler if you have it) and the driver should slow down and use extreme caution. Because like it was mentioned some people will pull to the right and cut you off. However, as
long as you go slow, and give drivers a plethora of warning devices, most people figure it out and stay where they are.
Take this video to the police department, use the license plates and start mailing out "failure to yield" tickets. Once you start taking people's money, they will start moving.

As a long retired fire captain and former ambulance and rescue guy, I have a few thoughts for discussion. There are way too many failure to yield incidents and accidents. Because ambulances typically run more code trips they have greater risk. In my day we were just getting the first Paramedics and telemetry to bring the ER to the scene. In my experience about 70% of calls were not life-threatening to start, then of the remainder 20% could be stabilized at the scene reducing the need for a grab and run code 3 to the hospital. 10% were genuine code 3 to the hospital. I see today in, California, ambulances by the hundreds screaming to the hospital with broken bones, lacerations, nosebleeds, hemorrhoids and other non life issues only to drop the patient for a 4 hour wait at the ER. It seems to me that we could eliminate a lot of risk to first-responders and citizens by eliminating un-necessary code runs from the scene to hospital. Also car makers have all kinds of warning electronics, auto stop, lane departure, etc. Why not install electronics to "listen" for sirens and alert the driver? Modern cars are built to squelch outside noise and many drivers are distracted or just stupid. I know we cannot fix stupid but there are some things we could do. Lastly, new electronic sirens just don't command the attention of the old Q sirens :)

In California, ambulances can only got code 3 for life threatening injuries, uncontrolled bleeding, or potential loss of limb/disability. Company policy can dictate it further than that. If you listen to the medic scanner, you'll hear the report they give to base on the way to the hospital, which would include their reason for running code 3. If a medic calls in they're on their way to the ER code 3 with a person who has a minor laceration, I'm sure their supervisor will be getting notified.
In Ohio, the law is lights on the siren on. I worked with an individual who went to jail driving an ambulance, went thru an intersection and killed a woman and her unborn fetus. He drove thru the intersection she came along his right side and was blocked by a truck for visibility and drove into the intersection as he went thru. One factor against him was the speed he went thru the intersection. The judge (hanging judge)told the jury find him guilty of a misdemeanor he will be convicted of a felony and that's what happened. Two to ten yrs in prison. It took two yrs and congress to get him released, but a precedent had been set. It was so bad that a firefighter had a trial where he was a witness. he was on a working fire, the chief left a working fire to take him to court. He was ten minutes late, they get cited for contemppt of court, threatened with jail and a fine. Remember when u use lights and siren your are ASKING for permision to enter that intersection or trying to get around that vehicle. It's not automatic.
Most states it’s also a law that they have the right of way when lights and or sirens are on. And failure to yield is also jail and fine. Some smaller city’s will often run rolling stings where they stop people just for not stopping. A heavy 500 buck ticket and up to 6 months

Robert McLennan in Chicago private ambulances only do transfers and special events. I can tell it's private because the FD ones here use EQ2Bs. So it's probably a transfer between hospitals.

Okay two scenarios to consider
1. Responding to a call - yes people should see the lights especially at night but a lot of drivers don't know what the rear view mirror is there for so use of siren prior to being on someone's bumper helps warn other motorists. In the U.K. We are told to change siren on approach to hazard as the changing of the siren helps focus motorists attention
2. Taking in a priority - by activating the siren earlier it would provide a more comfortable journey for the patient and your crewmate in the back especially in a Chevy which before you ask I have worked in.
It is interesting to look at the difference to the ways people respond to emergency vehicles and I will say hats of to the Germans and South Koreans that lead the way. In German it is also a legal requirement to have a first aid kit inter vehicle and you must surrender it if requested - the officer gives you a voucher to get a replacement.

What sucks is that there is no laws that state an ambulance must be yielded to. This is in Illinois and my friend who trained to be a paramedic, he was even told that cars do NOT have to get over for them. Illinios classifies Emergency Vehicles as only Police and Fire. Ambulances are not an immediate requirement since the majority of the Ambulance movements are just transporting. However everyone still gets over because it's the right thing to do.
The main thing I take from this is the appalling state of the Ohio roads, I was expecting the ambulance to fall to pieces at any moment.

I am a retired volunteer firefighter/EMT of eight years. I drove a squad for most of those years. The driver of this ambulance is negligent. My first assumption is he was dispatched on a code 3 call. If this is correct he was negligent because: 1) he did not favor driving in the leftmost lane (except for making freeway exits); and, 2) during most of the video he did not activate his siren (code 3 means lights AND siren). The purpose of the siren is to help give advance warning to drivers.
If I were the driver's supervisor I would have written him up, put him on probation and put him back in training. His behavior confuses drivers. This contributes to accidents.
One last observation: what's with the music? He should not be distracted by anything....
This is a prime example of a poor ambulance driver and his partner (if in the cab). He is a discrace.
Idk but here in Hawaii, since there's shortage of EMS ( Emergency Medical Services ) every call is treated as a code 3. Response time is about 10min

I'm a volunteer firefighter in the great state if Tennessee and yes alot of drivers don't want to yield the right of way because it's inconvenient to them they don't care if we are responding to some one who is dying or a 10-50 10-50 is fire code for motor vehicle accident but when they need us or their family needs us they will bitch and complain about how long it took us to get on scene

I think the ambulance in the beginning didn’t give enough notice when entering the intersection. I would have had my sirens on about 50 ft back no matter the code of call , just to be sure.

The purpose of the motorcycle medics is to get a trained emergency responder with advanced gear such as a defibrillator to the location faster. In events like cardiac arrest or stroke minutes count and if you can get someone to the victim earlier they have a much higher rate of survival.

In situations where traffic can't move or there's just no way for you to get through we are often taught (depending on the typical traffic you deal with) that it's better to just shut the lights off, then turn them on when there is an opportunity to pass. Ambulances sit higher than regular cars and often have grille lights, blinding the driver in front of them while there's nothing hw can do to move

Seems to be a lot of variation in the U.S. with ambulance driving procedures. In Australia we call Code 3 Code 1. Our code 2 is no lights/siren. Our policy is "use discretion" when using the siren. Sure it's going to be on in heavy traffic, but 3 a.m. in a deserted street?-nah! I'm sure every emergency vehicle driver will relate to this bit-no matter how many lights and sirens are on, you're going to get drivers who make you think you're invisible when the lights/siren go on.

First of all most state laws are if the emergency lights are activated the siren has to be also, plus all emergency vehicles are supposed to travel in the left lane on a multi lane road

Douglas Pearce thats actually not always true per policy.... some emergency vehicles turn the sirens off in residential areas later at night but keep the lights on ... thats what our fire dept does depending on the call... no point in waking up the whole neighborhood over a general illness.

First of all get in the left lane and stay there. The law is that vehicles have to pull to the right to yield to emergency vehicles. They can't do that if you're in the right lane.
2nd use that siren before the intersections to give the other motorists enough notice. Don't just tweak the siren.
3rd even in an ambulance you still have to stop at stop signs.

I really can't believe some of you people commenting. Read your road rules. They don't have to use sirens. Everyone is to automatically move over to allow any vehicle with flashing lights to get by them. That's why they have the flashing lights. You don't wait until they are on your ass either the moment you see them even if they are a big distance behind you move over. all you need to do is not impede their progress, no need for complete stop on the side of the road or especially no need for the idiots to stop on the opposite side of the road. just get out the emergency vehicles way and everybody's happy, law or no law. that complete stop thing is totally unnecessary and not part of any law anywhere ive lived, several states, and i checked, was law in previous places but many have been amended, even if it hasnt been amended, no officer will ever try to enforce that, only one thing is important, 'get out of the way'.
I am former leo and I am sorry I saw no blatant failure to yield. Intermediate lights and siren do not vaporize the other vehicles on the road. People have to see the emergency vehicle then have time to react with safety so they do not cause another wreck.
Alright. This is a great example of unprofessional, untrained, and amateur driving. I'm not 100% positive as to where this video originates from and my state does not use "codes" as to how we are responding. In the U.S., especially NJ, you are supposed to be CEVO III certified to be recognized as a trained driver of an ambulance. If they are responding code 2, they should have used sirens more often as they only decided to chirp the sirens when approaching cars or as they are running through a red traffic light. Appropriate training would have taught you that use of siren is supposed to be initiated approximately 200-300ft while approaching an intersection, and roughly 100ft while approaching other vehicles. As an ambulance driver, you are REQUIRED BY LAW to abide by traffic laws, regardless of situation. There are instances when an illegal U-Turn, wrong way, and other laws can be bent. However, you are not above the law. Speeding is speeding, and you are risking your life, your crew's lives, and the lives of those around you by excessive speeding, especially with an ambulance. Studies have shown that while using lights and sirens, ambulance drivers subconsciously speed up. As drivers, we all go above the speed limit when responding to a serious call; however, a smart driver will not risk the lives of others. You are required to drive with DUE REGARD, by law. Yes, many of these cars failed to yield to an emergency vehicle, which is horrific. However, whatever call these "medics" were responding to was roughly 17 minutes away from their location. That's a public safety hazard, as well as a public health hazard. This video is such a joke.
While I agree on the rather unprofessional driving habits in this video, I'm indeed very happy that the code 3 driving culture over here in Germany differs to what you have described. In the place where I have learned, it was pretty common (at least when it was safe to do so) to drive way faster, sometimes even twice the limit which is posted. In case there wasn't any speed limit we pushed the ambulance to the top speed.
Also running red traffic lights is pretty common here: often with only slowing down,sometimes without slowing down, sometimes also without siren usage. The rate of accidents with emergency vehicles involved is still very very low btw
What I do see here is you not getting your ass in the left lane and confusing the hell out all the drivers so they're not clear what you want them to do. I see this all the time and then the winning begins about drivers not yielding.
They shouldn't be allowed to operate a emergency vehicle. They should be fined and fired from their job. Any person in the position of authority would never just ride around for 17+ minutes video taping and claiming to be on a service call. Ambulances and fire trucks are limited to top speeds. I believe (last time I checked) they're only allowed 15 or 20mph faster than the posted maximum speed (limit).

Emergency vehicle or not there is just no excuse for this unbelievably poor driving and this inability to change lanes within a reasonable amount of time. In my opinion if an emergency vehicle can catch up to you before you get all the way to the right most emergency Lane then you should be suspended from driving for a month and the 2nd time three months suspension. by the third time this happens you should be suspended indefinitely.

Jess Vagnar O tickets in the mail don't work. for all types of legal reasons tickets in the mail just don't work. From legal arguments of you can't prove it was that person driving to arguments that
a fixed position video from a camera mounted to a pole doesn't get enough of the inappropriate action. Tickets in the mail almost always get argued in court and that gets expensive. Hospital and ambulance services being tied to law enforcement have endless safety and health issues and of course also trust issues, so you can't have law enforcement put a dash camera in the ambulance (which really is the best solution I think) also the most important reason for having a string of cop cars works well because one person getting pulled over is observed by dozens of other drivers whereas a thousand tickets in the mail doesn't let anybody else committing that same crime see that you got pulled over for this or for that.
but if you and I are driving the same and I see you get pulled over ahead of me or behind me then I become more conscious of what I'm doing and more important the ticket in the mail doesn't educate people. When they get a ticket in the mail they just say
"no, the ticket is a mistake"
and that's that when a cop pulls you over and physically says, look I've been behind you for a quarter-mile, how do you justify you were paying so little attention that you couldn't see me and think that you don't deserve a ticket.
Or that you did see me but for a quarter-mile you couldn't get your car pulled over in the span of a freaking quarter mile?
The point is cops telling you exactly what you did wrong and what they expected has more impact than just getting tickets in the mail. And a line of cops causes people to ask questions about why they were there and that's an immensely more efficient method of word getting out. They started doing this with school buses where they will take a lot of cop cars and make very very obvious that they're having Zero Tolerance of people passing stopped school buses with lights flashing.
This multi-car method is having lots of word-of-mouth impact and lots of actual real world result of people ceasing to pass school buses in our area where is tickets in the mail or some automated system doesn't do anything to deter the crime for anyone other than those few that get caught.

If you had your sirens on people would move out of the way probably your suppose to have them on anyways when responding to an emergency. So that people are aware of your presence... so you don't cause another accident.

Not stupid. That was an emergent transfer of a psychiatric patient to a more appropriate facility than where they were brought to by the fire department.

I have a issue with this, when you have traffic to deal with you runn that siren no matter what, these short bursts do NOTHING when you are running with lights you run that siren !
Code one is no lights no siren code two is lights and bursts of siren like this video code three is everything

Why in the world would you go south on the Dan Ryan? You started at State St. just north of Cermak, then decide to take a little sight-seeing tour past Sox Park before heading back north and into the worst congestion in the city. Anyone who drives in Chicago knows you would NEVER go through the Jane Byrne interchange if you're in a hurry. Why not just stay on State where you started and then go due west on Roosevelt?? With flashing lights, that would have saved you about ten minutes!
To my knowledge, if responding code 3 the sirens are required to be used every time. Code 2 is lights only, even in Chicago. Better figure out how to keep that siren going if you expect people to move.

Used in burglary and break in calls so as not to alert thieves of police presence. If a cop or other emergency vehicle is driving with no lights or sirens, they're not "responding" to any calls as far as the general motoring public is concerned. They may be transporting non emergency, such as moving someone from one hospital to another or suspect transport to a jail or another jurisdiction. Any life threatening call requires code 3 response with sirens. I have friends and family members in both law enforcement and fire/emt fields. So don't try to lecture me on a goddamn thing because I know very well what code responses are required

Corn Fed and under most, and I say most, state and local laws and ordinances when an emergency vehicle is responding to an accident or medical emergency, code 3 MUST be used. Which mean light AND SIRENS REQUIRED. Some areas with massive population density, such as downtown Chicago and New York City allow for Code 2 during night hours or in light traffic. But if transporting a gunshot wound victim, stroke or heart attack patient or anything else considered life threatening, code 3 is REQUIRED. Same for fire engines responding to a fire call. You obviously have no knowledge of how and when to use Code 2 and 3.
Corn Fed Do you even know what the signal code "10-8" means? 10-8 means IN-SERVICE or AVAILABLE for calls. 10-17 means RESPONDING or EN-ROUTE. Why don't you learn what codes and signals actually mean before you dictate to somebody about it.
Corn Fed, in my area 10-8 means available and 10-17 means enroute. Hmm maybe that's why after 9/11 FCC made the mandate that everyone use PLAIN ENGLISH instead of signals and codes... just something to consider and think about.

Almost everywhere in Europe if the lights are on, the siren has to be on. If the siren is off no1 has to give way. But when both of them are on everybody have to clear the way and stop, not continue driving. The only country i've seen people driving with the ambulace or even faster tham it is the UK (but they are the Japan of Europe and not talking only about driving; everything there is on the japan-weird level). And what the hell is this to drive only 10mph above the limit ?! Dafuq? If i've bust my Femoral artery i'd want to be driven to the ER asap, not crawling at 70km/h on a clear road cos the ambulance can't go any faster....
Well, it's not unusual that emergency vehicles on German highways get passed as well. The fire trucks might hit 100 kph, but even when an ambulance is able to reach 160 to 170 kph, there are still some people which are driving faster; As long as they are passing me when its safe to do so, I don't have a problem with it;
Concerning lights + sirens: in order to have the right of way, we have to use both, but we may switch off the siren on our own risk when there's no relevant traffic ahead

Just read a lot of the comments made. No matter what the reason for this ambulance to be traveling with lights or sirens on the rules state in every country to move out of the way for this vehicle to have a clear run to its destination. I watch a lot of these clips and I will say this is the worst I have seen from America and the attitude of the comments are showing the selfishness attitudes Americans have today.

We should all have our licenses taken away and only certain ones should be allowed to get the license back it is appalling how many people think that putting on their brakes is more beneficial to you than getting out of your way.

In my county, we pay a property tax to maintain the buildings and equipment but get billed for any transport to the hospital. The County EMS agency sells a free ride insurance policy for $160 a year. The transports charge mileage just like a taxi with surcharges for level of care. My wife, in a moment of delirium/anxiety requested to be taken to the hospital where her doctor works rather than the closest hospital. It cost us $800 for 8 miles. We did not have the free ride policy.
As a prior EMT Basic, I understand how different agencies can work.

Since they are recording it all just levy a fine against all those vehicle owners for failing to yield. After a while everybody will know that they mean business and get the fuck out of the way in the future.
