I love algae scrubbers; have made all the difference for my tank. That said, I personally find the clearwater brand to be amazingly expensive for what they are.

Can you please share how your tanks have benefitted and what brands you like? Thank you!

@@moviefan4life166 I use the Icecap scrubbers. It's been much easier to maintain low levels of no3 & po4 while feeding the fish very heavily, which in turn benefits the corals.

Thanks for sharing. I will check them out for sure, especially one I can add to my sump.

I run the same scrubber and have it installed very similarly to you, on a little shelf above my sump. It grows algae well and does what it's supposed to do. A few things I don't like is 1. the acrylic sides have begun to bow out slightly and the tray that holds the screen no longer slides in and out of the unit easily. I have to squeeze the sides inward to get the tray to slide in and out. 2. If the unit isn't cleaned often enough strings of green algae will begin to come out the drain and dirty up the sump. 3. I do worry about the hose barb inlet, if that hose was ever to pop off that barb the entire water volume of the system could get pumped out onto the floor. I've never had it come off but I did put a couple zip ties around the hose on the barb for extra insurance.

Been running a Clearwater Scrubber Algae Scrubber on various tanks now for at least 3 maybe 4 years. They can be very effective at nutrient export.
Tip - if you have any GHA in your display(even a tiny amount) , on your next maintenance, take a little tiny bit of it, and rub it on then screen to seed it. It'll start growing pretty quick.
We're currently running the previous version of the CWS scrubber on our office tank, and it does need to be harvested at least once a week.
Planning to upgrade it to the new version soon.

Seeding definitely helps, I had to harvest exactly one month after first turning on my DIY scrubber. Couldn’t believe how quickly the algae grew.

Did you ever provide an update on your scrubber experience?

Update? You still using it or maybe it worked too well? Maybe it it didn’t work?

How's the scrubber working for you? Has phosphates & nitrates levels dropped

Any positives a few months on? 😊

Do you still use this deice and would you say it's too good at keeping phosphates and nitrates under control?

I’ve tried chaeto, it crashes. I don’t want to dose stuff to keep ‘pet’ chaeto. I DIY’d a scrubber as hair algae won’t crash. ALWAYS run into your filter socks! Keeps sump clean and algae out of pumps!!

That life rock is a real pain when it comes to phosphates. It absorbs like crazy and then slowly leeches. Very hard to “out compete” the rock.

So it doesn’t look like taking the chaeto offline in favor of the bacteria dosing for nutrient export worked as well as you’d hoped. I suspect you’ll have better luck growing algae now with dosing all the traces than you did with the chaeto. I think that’s why peoples chaeto crashes. I’m personally copying Abe’s method of GFO + Heavy feeding and I’m having good luck with that at the moment. My DIY scrubber has slowed down on growth since adding the Rowaphos though.

These things work too well. I have the old version. Had to dial it back and eventually remove it.
