What is truly amazing about this performance is that she was kind enough to keep the performance date even after a devastating lightning strike which rendered the organ at about 30% capacity! But she played in a way that made it seem like the organ was at full force!
When I was 15 years old (back in the eighties) I was proud of making up my own bass line when playing "The last waltz" on a Yamaha home organ... This might have had an impact on my confidence. Amazing! There are no other word for it!
6 years on and this video still leaves me gasping for air, sweating and covered in hard goosebumps. And that's just from the devilish little wink she gives before she tears into this work lol!
I've been learning it for about a year now and i can tell you, the *operation* of the instrument is quite easily understandable. Basically, the keyboards (manuals) and the pedalboard work similarily to a piano keyboard, you hit a note and it makes a sound. The large amount of buttons/switches/pistons are called stops, and they control what sounds the organ makes. Usually, you preset these in a configuration before you play, and you hardly operate them very much during a song. For example, you can pull a "prestant" which is the most standard pipe, and you can add on other sounds like mixtures, flutes, trumpets, horns, to basically have an orchestra playing at your hands. Overall, the playing of the organ purely physically is not that hard, but then, of course, actually learning to play songs and master the theory is much much harder!
Most people here are admiring this for the dexterity and the physical achievement involved, not because they think this is the most tasteful and delicate rendition of the piece ever captured on film. American culture is far from perfect but your prejudice is unwarranted.
My Auntie could. She was amazing and worked the pedals like a keyboard. She was very talented on the Hammond. She also played the violin like a virtuoso. Some people are gifted that way. She certainly was an exception.
Also, the trick with the pedals is interesting. I played too. After a while you memorize the locations of the pedals and don't have to look anymore. It's a spatial thing. Sometimes when changing organ models this can cause minor problems until you adjust to the layout. It's amazing how accurate the feet can be without having to look at what you are doing.
I come from a family of Church Organists. I do understand the skill need to use the feet like this. My older brother started Organs lessons at age 13 (he had been playing piano since age 4) The whole fist year of organ he ONLY was taught to use his feet. the result was that he could play like this. She has excellent skill!
TeenageMillionaire there are hundreds of thousands of these instruments in churches around the world. I imagine not so many elsewhere. They used to have them in cinemas in the fifties, but they are mostly gone now. I recently played one in the Tuschinsky cinema in Amsterdam !
All right, she's a ballet dancer as well as a highly accomplished musician--how else to explain her little feet dancing over those pedals in perfection? Wow, wow, wow...simply amazing talent!
Seldom, in fact, hardly ever, have I laughed aloud when listening to pipe organ music. For all the years I played the organ, I never was able to play presto. BRAVO! What fun! Thank you Carol. Cecelia
Believe or not you would actually make mistakes more if you were jacked so usually you wanna be very calm when doing this. Not exactly the same but I am a helo pilot and if I drink a lot of coffee before a flight my pedal work is always shitty and I don't hold the chopper in as steady of a line as usual because it makes your movements kinda rapid and un controlled
Wonderwoman in perfection. Insane, wonderful, beautiful, amazing! Only the klicking sound of the shoes or/and organ pedals disturbed my enjoyment a little. Thanks for sharing.
I had played piano for many years. I once took a 30-minute organ lesson (fundraiser at our church) and spent the whole time learning how to coordinate the key releases without the crutch of a sustaining ("loud") pedal. I never did get to the footwork. :)
What amazes me is not the fact that somebody can actually play that thing but the fact that somebody actually produced it based on the premise that it can be played in the first place.
Its like playing with two hands isn't hard enough. They had to develop a piano to incorporate the feet to challenge pianists everywhere. XD Love it! Great job, Carol!
Whenever I see someone playing organ I just think about strength of their back... It isn't really easy to balance your body while sitting without holding your feet on ground
Simply unbelievably fantastic. Miraculous! This lady has to be a "rubber maiden" (instead of an iron maiden) because of her extremely agility/versatility! Every time I have watched this it gets me completely. Thank you so much for playing, taping, editing, uploading and sharing.
hey buddy, you gotta be redirected here by accident! this is pipe organ, you can see, it does have keys on keyboards like piano but also the pedalboard too. hope it opens up your mind about thiis magnificent instrument. regards ;)
My brain is so confused, my brain cannot handle that amount of multitasking. That’s real talent
No more than driving a car ;)

Challenging it was... thanks Craig for the opportunity.
two set should react to this
True
motor coordination insane!
I'd hate to run against Dr. Carol on the track or play a video game either, but I can imagine her doing both at the same time. Incredible, awesome!
Beautiful...

Very nice to see her playing with such organ!
It blows my mind, not only does she move her feet unbelievably fast, but her hands at the same time. That's pretty awesome.
I'm still astonished ,the amount of coordination to do this is nothing less than super human. You are truly gifted Madame. Blesses be
That performance is really good! The footwork is fantastic. People don't usually see that part of it so clearly. Cudos to her!

Because, you know, playing it with your hands is not badass enough.
Drinu Camilleri I'd like to see you even attempt playing an organ, I bet you can't even play a piano
Train.Spotter.UK why are you bashing him for complementing the organist?
Train.Spotter.UK She is being complemented not bashed!
Train Spotter, You can´t understand a compliment, can you?
Because, you know, it's a pipe organ.
The great Dr Williams, truly superb
after four years of music playing.. this is still a divine light..
That is FANTASTIC !!!!!!
The organ is such an incredibly complex instrument, it's incredible. So many keys and buttons, how would anyone even begin to learn it? It's insane.
with strong will and determination, everyone can! but to master it is exceptional :D

_WHAT DOES THIS MEAN_
I did it and I start when I was 11 years old
Utterly fantastic.....
(an) Amazing Feat!
Nothing short of Ballet on the Pedals!!

I'm blown away. I played this on organ in my youth and thought I did a pretty darn good job. Dr. Carol Williams just killed it. Brava!
"the bass on a manual? Nah, let's do pedals >:)"
Wow!!!!! Great Performance!!!! Foot Pedals... Wow!!!
it's magical to see someone play like this. .
Wow this is fantastic. You certainly dance with your feet like a tap dancer with speeding fingers. Like friend
Now how many people can do that? Memorize a dance AND play a pipe organ, at the same time? Incredible.
Me '-' ok maybe not lol

She's looking at some sheets
ENn0ble TBH it’s like playing with your hands , but a little more difficult and with your feet , look at the pedals ... it’s a foot piano 🎹
Wonderful!
And with your shoes on to boot!!
Well, THAT is nothing short of INCREDIBLE !
Unbelieveble, how awesome!! Really fantastic!!! Wooow!!!!!
Fantastic piece of footwork, I broke out in a sweat just watching she must have been knackered by the time she had finished

I might add this piece to my list of long term projects; it must be so fun to play the pedals like that, once one has mastered it!
I imagine only a handful of people can play this instrument let alone play at a high level as seen in this video
I would say I’m moderate, so that looks like it would take me about a month non-stop to try and complete.
TeenageMillionaire there are hundreds of thousands of these instruments in churches around the world. I imagine not so many elsewhere. They used to have them in cinemas in the fifties, but they are mostly gone now. I recently played one in the Tuschinsky cinema in Amsterdam !
