Part of the reason for the MiG-29's lower roll rate will be the engine layout, because it's twin engined, and they are separated that moves the mass along the roll axis further out, which will increase the moment of inertia in that axis.
Our F-16 is late Block 50 CCIP which is A LOT heavier than Cold War dogfighter F-16A - some 2 tons more with exactly the same wing area, they upgraded the engine and T/W is still good but wing loading is far worse than F-16A which is MiG-29 counterpart. But the video is great, thanks!
Does the MiG-29 in DCS have the helmet-mounted sight which came into service in the mid-80s? The capability to use that to target HOBS IR missiles was one of its biggest advantages in WVR combat and while the F-16 had far better avionics, it didn't receive a comparable system in US service until years later (Israeli F-16s got helmet-mounted sights around the late-80s/early-90s).
Yes, it has got the Shlem HMCS...... pretty darn simple a ring you put over the target, lock on if it flashes you can theoretically launch. Realistically you need to judge this based on the angle-off tail.
Sorry Cap I hate to say that, but as this is the second video comparing the F16 with another aircraft, things still might change for the F16 in future updates. No idea how much it will affect the outcome of future dogfights, especially guns only. I just wanted you to be aware of that.
Back in the days of old Falcon sims the Mig-21 was the main opponent and considered to be roughly as capable as the Viper. When flying the Mig-21 in DCS one realizes what a huge quantum leap the F-16 was. The clear unobstructed view is already an incredible advantage. Better HUB, overall much more ergonomic. Mig-29 was a big step forward. Nevertheless Mig-21 remains one of my favorites. Flight model is less "on rails". Fight 39: Nice kill, Tail! Blue made it easy though. GS is always harping on jamming the WEZ in missile fights, which means one circle knives out. Blue went two circle, down, with the bottom of the "egg" being much wider, and Tail used the gravity assist to shorten the over the top and Blue never had a chance. Literally "lost it in the first turn". Classic kill! Great lesson! The gun fights? Wow! Shows if your max rating your turn you can't ease the G for a split second, especially when coequally matched! If you do, you die. You commit to the angles fight and you balk, it's over. Doesn't matter if you are in front or back. Tail just couldn't keep the nose on, got too slow (G's naturally fall off), and BAM, Squirtle seasoned his backside. Likewise, a previous fight, Red was working angles, Blue was max rate/G evading and waggled for a second. Red caught up the deficit, and ate Blue for lunch! I've seen that happen in several 1v1,videos. About all you got is to force a magic reversal! (Pinguin? I am looking at you! 👍👍) CAP, this was a great lesson on what not to do when fighting coequal opponents. One mistake is all it takes. EXCELLENT video! Excellent!
Tbh they are both light weight. The mig 29 being powered by 2 big engines on that small body gives it a huge power to weight ratio, and the F-16 is a tad bit smaller, but with 1 massive engine. I'd say they are both light weight in their own classes.
You _NEVER_ want to be either, above, or below corner airspeed at the merge. The last thing in the world you would do in real life is start an engaging turn while you're trans-sonic/supersonic, as it would make your turning circle too large, and crush your inter-vertebral discs. Instead, lead-turn the bandit at 440 knots (in the Viper), bank the Viper over 75-85 degrees, and pull hard until you've bled down to 330 knots. "Fox 2!!!"
In the case of the Viper, the General Electric engine performs better at low altitude while the Pratt & Whitney engine (not in DCS) performs better at high altitude. The flight behavior of the Fulcrum more closely resembles that of the Hornet (awesome AOA) than the Viper.
Although aesthetic, one thing that annoys me about the F-16 is when it gets shot down (with guns or missiles), the flame sprouts from where there's no wing. I guess they'll introduce a proper damage module like they did with WWII aircraft.
