- Fall and Winter bring storms and high winds on Vancouver Island and it often leads to a power outage. Luckily they usually only last a few hours but last winter we had an outage that lasted 14 hours! Given that I work from home I need to be able to power my modem and computer.
Luckily, I have a propane stove that I can light manually. I love my Jackery and Ninjabat power stations and they allow me to have the power I need to stay on line and work. I'm also glad that I have back up rechargeable and batter powered lighting so that things aren't so dark and gloomy when the power is out.
Here are the links to the stand alone videos I made on what I use for lighting and power when the grid is down:

Resourceful and prepared. Good for you! I hope your power is back on, but if it goes out again, you’ll be ready.
Thanks 😊.
I never worry about you my friend, because you are so level-headed and resourceful! However, I do hope the power is back on soon so it doesn’t become uncomfortable for you and Sophie. ❤️
Thanks Zia! It was only out for a few hours this time.
Wow, are you prepared!!!
I'll be heading over to Canadian Tire. I can't believe I still use candles during blackouts. Thanks for all the info. Adelina.
BTW, your recipes are so good and I am slowly turning into a vegetarian.
You have probably saved an entire cow, just on my consumption.
Hope your power comes back on soon. Hugs to
You and Sophie.
LOL! Thanks Gabriele. For both!
My brother and friends live on the Island. They all have generators. A couple of times they were out for over 2 days. It’s a good idea to have your own generator living there. ❤
I think so too.
Way to go being prepared! Thanks for the insight. That coffee thing is super cool. Nice job
Thanks 😊
Good advice. Be prepared. Looking at these power banks for myself. These videos remind me what I should do as a single woman. You're a blessing! I always look forward to your nuggets ❤
You're so welcome 😁.
I'm glad you are doing ok. It's no surprise that you are. It can be done, but I'm glad you don't have any medical issues. That need power.😊. Have a good week.
Yes, if I did, I would have purchased a gas generator already for sure. 😊
When I saw your jackery in a previous video, I told hubby, “that’s what I want for my birthday” 😑
LOL! It's a good gift!
Very good ideas. Thanks.
You are welcome!
I'm glad we have a generator because living in a woodsy country area, we tend to lose power whenever it storms (northeastern Pennsylvania). It's good for a couple of days.
Yes I think it's a good idea.
An interesting book: "When Technology Fails"
That sounds interesting.
Hi Adelina, I just stumbled upon your channel, and it’s really shined some light on the tiny home lifestyle for me! I’ve been very interested in owning a tiny home for years! I’m new to Calgary, so I’m thrilled to know I can own a tiny house here!
Hello Lane! Welcome and I'm glad the channel is helpful 😊.
Well prepared!! For any home, Tiny or not Tiny. Do you have plans to go off grid sometime in the future.?
When I have my own property.
Wow Adelina. I watched the plain bagel on canadian housing. Hearing all the canadian housing/banking crisis, you should feel proud you don't have to worry about paying for a huge house. 👍
I'm glad I made the decision to go tiny 😊.
I never thought of using light strips or the Jackery for power during an outage but will use in the future. My husband pulls out the generators if needed but honestly in the past 35 years living in Florida we’ve only used the generators a couple of times. Gas generators require some monthly upkeep like running it for 30 minutes or so otherwise it might not start, something to consider. Propane is definitely better. Two things I do is keep two or three water filled Rubbermaid containers in my freezer and then use them to keep my fridge and freezer cold. Works really well because it takes many many hours to thaw a big chunk of ice versus using bags of ice or ice cubes which disintegrate quickly. I also fill my bathtub up with water to use for washing and flushing. You’re lucky to have only been without electric for 16 hours. Our longest was 5 days, in the heat along with several stormy days, ugh. It was pretty horrible. I love storms but they can be a bit of a nuisance. Stay safe. 😊
I like the idea of keeping a couple of frozen water bottles in the freezer. Luckily, I have a compost toilet so don't need water for flushing. 😊
Hello. I live in a home and we lost power due to storm. I used mini indoor outdoor generator. If you're interested Eco River. I just purchased the solar panel for it. 👍 There's other models Delta. Generator-you can run fridge purchased HSN/QVC. You're so resourceful. Tiny living paid off for you. Have a great day
I will check it out
Power outages are just a part of life. Some areas get them more than others. Good on you to be so prepared. I also like oil lamps.
Yes, I'm on the look out for oil lamps in thrift stores 😁.
A big caution on oil lamps or other flames as if you or the cat knock them over- it is a serious problem.
You are a such a smart and resourceful lady.
😊
Very fortunate and great planning to have the power sources you have. Take care.
Thanks 😊.
Yes being prepared is key. You could buy a generator that runs off propane. I don't know anything about the cost or efficiency. The puck lights are so much brighter and will light up a small room. Love them. Hope power returns soon. Have a great day.
Thanks Donna 😊.
I'm really impressed with how much light you get from all those portable sources. And FWIW, your curls are looking 🔥
Yes, they put out a lot of light. Thanks ☺️.
That introduction with the song and you making coffe and power off o wow just loved it....loved this video and yes if powercut happens we get so irritated but after seeing yours will enjoy it
You are so resourceful and smart! Thank you for sharing! I didn’t know those small power generators existed!
Thanks for watching!
I was wondering what you would do for heating. Maybe I'll find out in the next video.
I'll do a video on that at some point.
I love watching people adapt and prepare for unexpected events. What will you do if you lose power in the winter? I'm hoping to have a tiny wood burning stove in the next place I move to. LOL you answered after I asked :D
Thanks. I will do a video on heating in the future. Maybe when the power goes out this winter.
Good information, thanks for sharing with us.
You're welcome 😊.
I'm always glad to see anything that shows generators that can be solar powered. I've been shopping for them for a while for power outages and as possible ways to be less dependent on fossil fuels in my home. I rent, so I can't change to solar power completely. I'll definitely be checking out the video links! Thanks from Massachusetts, USA!
You're welcome 😊.
I keep my car camping Jackery in my house and fully charged in case of “rolling black outs” where I live. It is very handy!
Good for you 😊.
That is great to see how prepared you are! Take care❣️
Thanks 😁.
Yep.... you opened frig for creamer... which made me wonder about plans for frig. Interesting to hear how you're prepared. 👍
What about your fridge?
She talks about that toward the end of the video 😊
Yes, you should get a gas generator. Especially living on an island. 2 winters ago, my hubby had to come home 3 different times to hook up generator so i could use my computer for work.
You live in the wild Pacific Northwest!! ❤
You are so wellprepared for anything that comes..good for you. Im wondering where you got the small puck lights that you said you have by your bed. There very neat. Your house is well lit with all the lights you use. I enjoyed this video.
Thanks. I got the puck lights and the small batter operated lanterns at Canadian Tire.
Thanks for the reply..will look at CT..❤
Great video! Our power also goes out from time to time in the winter. Where did you purchase the strip lights? Those look very useful!
Amazon. I put the link in the show notes below the video.
Wow great preparation indeed. I need those things too. Im goona send this to my mom to make sure she has them since she in one of those grifty grid systems. She does have a generator so definitely get one!!!
Thanks, I think I will 😊.
Even cheap solar lights can be brought inside for some light.
I want to find some of the light stralips and a crank lantern. For now, candles and oil lamps work well. Plus a big buddy propane heater.
Absolutely, if you can save up for the Honda 2300, that will be a great fit. Plus, I hear they're good with gas use and are relatively quiet. It's on my list of saving for as well or a multi fuel generator. It gets very cold here and very hot in the summer.
Glad you're safe, and it's not cold.
Thanks 😊.
❤
Thank you so much for all this great information. I’m going to buy items such as these. Very wise woman you are. And yes the generators are expensive.
☺️
Very informative! Thank you! I need to look into getting some of these charging devices. I also love the light strips!!
I'm glad it was useful 😊.
Those light strips are fantastic. Our electric went out several days ago and we were without power for over 10 hours ( we had a hurricane) . I have candles and lanterns but those strips are ideal. And like you I have a gas range so no problem there. Hops you have power soon...stay safe.
I love them too. They are dimmable and you can set them so they are motion activated.
Thank you for this video. Just something to add to my list of things to get when I get my tiny house. ❤❤
😊
Great advice for the event of a power outage. Have a great week Adelina 😊
Same to you
Those power banks , are really the answer to short loss electricity , hope not to much damage . 😊 maybe have a small gas run freezer in your under ! in your basement area. That you can transfer freezer goods if the power goes out for long “ like a stand by freezer” 👍❄️
👍🏼good idea.
❤
Can you tell me about your power strips name and where you purchased.
I have links to where I purchased the two batteries in the description below the video 😊.
👍
12 volt fridges that run from solar are available.
Canadian off grid
Thank you for this excellent post!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Awesome being prepared is so important in these situations thanks for the share
Thanks Kurt 😊.
This is a topic that both my partner and I are very excited about.
We have separate tiny homes in a tiny home community that loses power about 10 times per year ( a few minutes to days) so being prepared is key.
I agree with you about about many of the products and processes that you utilize.
PREPARATION:
Over time, it is important to have specific items in place so that when power outages occur- you are ready.
A gas fireplace that requires no power as a backup to my gas furnace is maintained and ready to use.
An assortment of portable lights are always located in important spots. A further amount is in a single box to find easily.
I keep a container with rechargeable batteries ready to go and check them every 6 mths.
Several empty containers are ready for filling with potable and handwashing water.
A small amount of sealed bottled water is kept and replaced annually.
Hot water bottles can be tucked in bed under several blankets and keep you warm for 24 hours.
We also have a gas stove and gas BBQ for cooking.
Powerbanks are kept charged and ready.
WEATHER-RELATED PREPARATION:
The vast majority of our outages are predictable due to the weather.
Keep up to date about storms, especially wind and start preparations ( Ie check powerbank, batteries, fill water, etc ) before the place gets dark.
POWERBANKS:
I do disagree on one main point about obtaining a gas powered generator because there are so many ecological and practical options available without the drawbacks of gas generators. ( I.e.. fossil fuels, monthly maintenance, polluting, noisy, reliant on getting outside fuel)
There are many reliable companies that have created power banks similar to your Jackery that have a much much higher capacity and can power sections or your entire tiny home.
Some are stackable ( ie buy one component and add more power banks as you want it).
Most can be charged by being plugged into your electrical outlet or solar panels ( permanent mounted or temporary).
My partner is obsessed and informed on this topic and has multiple battery bank systems.
Also consider that an electric car is a huge battery bank back up system either by design or adaption.
Feel free to ask questions and I will do my best to answer.
Thanks so much for your comment. Agreed! I should look at those bigger pattern banks. Echoflo and Jackery both now have big ones. Thanks for the reminder.
The least expensive option by FAR is building your own emergency power supply from 300ah LiFeP04 batteries. I use just one Ampere Time 300ah 12v battery, 2000w pure sine wave inverter, 20 amp plug-in LiFeP04 charger, and 60 amp MPPT solar charge controller and solar panels in the camper I live in. My system has 3.8 kwh capacity and can power everything I own. I did buy power stations for my lights, small fridge, freezer, WIFI, etc but that was several years ago when they were still a bargain and I got them cheap when I saw sales. The only ones I paid full price for was ones containing LiFeP04 batteries like the Golabs and Bluetti EB70. But when they fail I can`t repair them. If my inverter fails I can replace it. I can run my tiny air conditioner all night with my big battery or small 200 to 400 watt heaters and electric blankets in winter emergencies.
@baneverything5580 Hi! Wow, it sounds like you really know what you're doing. Thanks for sharing 😊.
Have you tried the little Dash Mini Griddle? They use only 350w so a 500w power station can run them. They have a 200wq mini rice cooker too. I`ve been downsizing everything for efficiency because we have so many power outages. Check out the 200w Lasko heater too. The most efficient thing to do in a winter power outage is use an electric blanket but in a small space those little heaters are very useful.@@myBIGtinyhouselife
@baneverything5580 I have two electric throws. One I can use in bed and a smaller one that I put over my lap at my desk in the winter. I find I prefer to use it and I also have a very small and low wattage heater I put under my desk. That way I don't have to have the furnace going as much. I've got the Dash mini rice cooker and waffle iron. And a small George Forman that works great. I use my air fryer and toaster oven more often as it's more efficient and the Instantpot.
You're so smart. Hope your power soon returns. 😊
It came back on right after I finished filming ☺️.
Do you have any solor panels. I think I am going to get me one and a jacket , I think that was smart. With all your solar lights. I have some out on my front porch. I think I have told you I sold my house in Tulsa Oklahoma , 3 years ago. Bought a shed to tiny house. It’s on my sons property. Out in the country. But 18 miles to a town. But we have a Dollar General store 1 mile from my house. But I am thinking about some sola panels.
Yes, I have some portable solar panels I can hook up to the two power banks to charge.
@@myBIGtinyhouselife love your videos, but I think that is what I will get. I have 2 windows on my front porch. I can just put them there. I do have one that works for my 2 porch lights. Thanks. Hope your electric is ok now. This is Sunday.
Thanks for sharing Adelina. Glad that it appears you didn't have any damage from the storm. As far as solar generators go you can find ones that will run your fridge, the Eco flo's. You can purchase extra batteries that tie into the main one...pricey but they can run your fridge. Heavy too, so when you're doing your research make sure to check those stats too. They also have some on wheels...Good luck with your research. 🥰
Thanks for the info 😊.
Thanks for your insights and ideas.
Another idea, since you have these batteries, is getting a "van life" fridge. That is what I am calling my little freezer. I needed more freezer space but everything I purchase must eventually be usable in a van/tiny house. So I got one that I can also use in my car. It was the smallest I could find and it also looks cute 🙂
My freezer can be set to fridge or freezer.
So, in your case, it can be a fridge/freezer for you van, and in case of a power outage you can use your van or your batteries to power the freezer (it uses up next to nothing) and move stuff over when there is a fear of thawing too much food.
Then... If all else fails, batchcook meals from the thawed products and re-freeze after they have cooled off. By then the power should be back on. No foodwaste and a little gift to future you :-)
Can you send me info on what you bought?
@@myBIGtinyhouselife my answer keeps disappearing here. I have sent you an email
@liesbethbos3049 got it! 😁
Keep us posted that your doing well. ❤🎉
You are so prepared. Thanks for showing how you do this. Very informative even for those in regular homes.
Thanks 😊.
Thank you. Very informative ❤
:) Thanks MUCH for sharing and YES, our stormy season is here, we have had thunderstorms and such, but have kept power :) Great idea to get your Van stuff out to help power and such! I have most of mine in garage now and handy in case except power station in Daughters car still, and my Oupes main one failed :( Cool coffee maker indeed, added it to my list :) ALL the BEST and Cheers from down south ! :) Take care!
Thanks for sharing
Preparation is key. I have a number of flashlights, etc. but most importantly, I have a Jackery 500 as backup power for my CPAP machine. Fortunately I haven't needed to use my Jackery often but check on it regularly to ensure it's fully charged. I'm also getting a couple of USB chargeable decorative table lamps from Costco which will work great in case of power outage.
Great idea. 😊
My neighborhood was hit by a tornado a month ago. Where I live we don't usually get tornadoes. Everyone was ok but so much damage to homes and cars. Trees were down everywhere which means the power was out for days. Yes, we now have a generator but I am going to stock up on some of those items you shared. Take care-Sue in MI
Oh no! I hope you didn't have too much damage. ❤️
Thanks for the helpful information. We think we’re prepared until it happens. Then we realized we should’ve done more preparations.
That's true! 😁🤷🏻♀️
First, I want to say thank you for this video. I live in Oklahoma in the US and last winter we had a bad ice storm where we lost electricity for 8 days and it was very cold. I want to say I think you are an awesome person who shares great ideas about what you use for situations like this. I did purchase the presto coffee maker and next month will purchase the led strip lights for the times, when we have days like last year.
I appreciate you and thank you.
Thank you! I'm glad you found it helpful.😊
I love seeing an independent woman being able to figure all this out. I'm much like you - independent and make sure I'm prepared. I love your tiny home! It looks so cozy and all you need. I'd love one but seems like you have to be in a more country area in order to put one somewhere. I like living in a neighborhood in a city so would be a difficult transition I think and rather lonely. I like walking out my door and having a community.
Thank you. ☺️❤️
I guess it can’t be much different than in any house…being in a rural mountain community our power goes our routinely! Just about every time the wind kicks up. 😣….sometimes for days! we pretty much do all the same… I always have extra water on hand…some clean for drinking and some for flushing and cleaning as we have a well as well. In the winter we have our Wood-stove so I never worry about heat…. And we can cook on it as well. We also have a duel fuel generator that could actually run everything in our house if need be but we use it at last resort…ie. If the power is out for more than a day! Otherwise we make due ….Too funny I saw you making your coffee with that My Joe and immediately thought “oh wow…Matthew has one as well” lol….
I've never heard of a duel fuel generator.
I hope you have powder by now, Adelina. Informative video. 🩵
Oh yes. It came back on shortly after I finished filming 🤷🏻♀️😁.
You are well set for power outage.
For a short one, yes. 😊
Glad to see you’re so prepared and always seem to be thinking ahead. 🩷 I like those strip lights, so bright!
Thanks 😊
