Something I hear a lot is "Gravy here is like this white gravy." I want to make sure that it's clear that we do have other gravy. We do have turkey gravy, chicken gravy, brown mushroom gravy, beef gravy, au jus, and others, I'm sure. It's just that the gravy served with Biscuits and Gravy is sausage gravy which is white.
County gravy, brown gravy, chicken gravy, sausage gravy etc etc, we have multiple gravies. And typically American restaurants have to go cups as well as to go boxes so you could've got your drink and took it with you even if you couldn't finish it. Pro tip, at the end of your meal get your refill but ask for it to go.
I used to work in the gift shop at Cracker Barrel back in 2009-2014. It was the most fun I have ever had at a job. And this is back when we offered free gift wrapping for any presents bought there. If you were on gift wrap duty during the holidays... you were crazy busy! ❤ Absolutely love your vlogs!❤
Brit living in Illinois for last 12 years , love Cracker Barrel , the breakfast hashbrown casserole is amazing , I just normally get the biscuits with some jam don’t do the gravy , Cracker Barrel coffee is also some of the best coffee
American breakfast sausage is, AFAIK, a pretty specific thing, and not really something you’ll find anywhere else. Sure does make good sausage gravy though.
I've seen videos that show a English breakfast from the UK & their sausage looks like a hot dog to me. They also serve baked beans from a can. So basically American version of beans & weenies.
You can get either whole wheat (wholemeal) or white toast at Cracker Barrel. Just ask for it instead of biscuits. They'll bring it to you. If you look at the sides menu, you'll see the toast there. Loved the video! Peace!
It's a darn shame you didn't try the Granny Smith apple tea. That stuff is incredible!!! I tried it the last time I was at Cracker Barrel, ended up drinking 3 of them. It's so good you want to just fill up your mouth with it and walk around like that all day. Go back and get some!!! :)
We also have what's called "red-eye gravy" in which coffee and fried ham/bacon drippings are used to make it, and then there's chocolate gravy, as well as turkey giblet gravy.
American gravy is the same brown gravy as you would have on turkey or potatoes or pot roast. The white sausage gravy is specific to biscuits or chicken fried steak or chicken. It's from the south but can be had in places across the country.
I think your right if it's beef gravy, however as we make gravy from the meat drippings, it varies depending on the meat course. One might have beef, chicken, turkey and pork gravy as well. Of course, they all go great on mashed potatoes!
@@brians48now White gravy is a béchamel sauce, which goes back to the 1600's, and sausage gravy is just that with sausage bits and the sausage juices used to make the roux.
"Gravy over here is white..." No. No. No. Gravies are any sauces made from meat drippings. Sausage or "country" gravy is made from sausage drippings and is white because milk is added instead of stock. Most gravies are some shade of brown as they start with a meat dripping roux and stock is added.
yes, it is funny how someone sees white gravy and assume all gravy is white. I would argue that other than the south if you say gravy, you think exactly what the people of the UK think - thickened brown sauce made from pan drippings (oh the south has it too). Gravy is simply a thickened sauce. What I call breakfast gravy (aka sausage gravy) is basically a bechamel (white sauce made with roux and milk) with sausage meat in it. Heck in parts of the east coast if you say you want gravy, you get a thick tomato sauce. So gravy has a wide variety of flavors and colors and simply refers to a thickened sauce. But to confuse matters more not all thickened sauces are gravy because you could be looking at a glaze. Basically, it doesn't matter what it is called. If it is your first time seeing something and the menu does not describe it, ask the server; they will most likely be able to describe it in terms you understand or even bring you a small sample of it (although a sample of sausage gravy is best when it accompanies meat and bread imo).
While it is tempting to assign the size of glasses of orange juice in America to our obsession with large portions, the real reason is that America produces a plethora of oranges which makes the cost of juice relatively low. England must import oranges from southern Spain which makes their cost of juice relatively high.
European produce is generally puny, more expensive and not nearly as fresh as what we get in America. In winter, the selection of produce in European markets is pretty pathetic by American standards.
American biscuits are similar to scones except scones has more sugar, it has flavoring (such as vanilla) and it has eggs. American biscuits almost never have eggs and it definitely doesn’t have flavorings and has a less sugar. American biscuits are lighter in texture if it’s done right where as scones are dense.
Correction on your assumption about sauces and gravies: There are many types of gravy styles available in America. It depends on the dish. The "white" gravy is a specific type of gravy for certain dishes.
That’s southern type gravy, different in other areas. Up in New England we call it gravy, thin meat based gravy. Cracker Barrel is a chain, up here too.
In winter, the fireplaces are active with burning logs and boxes. However, the rustic farm theme is definately worth referencing for interior design ideas.
Hubby and I were at the Wrentham Ma. location just a couple of days ago for his birthday breakfast. Picked up a couple of Christmas gifts as well. Love that place.
One thing to note about those stores is that Cracker Barrel sells a lot of regional sodas that you can't get unless you're in those regions. They also sell a lot of old fashioned candy that is harder to find. There are over 650 locations in at least 40 states, most of the locations are in the eastern half of the country so if you're visiting America in the central or eastern time zones you'll likely not be too far from one of them.
I just can't get over the breakfast in th USA. For breakfast in Australia, it's usually weetbix, or cereal or toast, but we have the egg bread with bacon and if it's a cooked breakfast it was bacon and egg's 😊 or egg and bacon roll 😊 but I could not imagine having the steak or the chicken 😊 ✨️✨️👋🇦🇺
Those breakfasts aren’t typical everyday ones. That’s a going out for breakfast treat and probably your biggest meal of the day. Daily breakfast is generally much lighter: cereal, toast, fruit, maybe eggs and bacon or sausage if you have more time.
Didn't you know that steak and eggs originated in Australia? During WWII, US Marines ate steak and eggs when they were stationed in Australia and brought the dish back home to the US!
I just have to correct the comment about gravy. We have all kinds of gravies. There's white sausage gravy there's brown chicken gravy there's darker brown beef gravy. There Is mushroom gravy. We also have tomatoes gravy, though more rare.
Aaaaaaaw loved this vlog 😃 takes me back to our visit last year and we love Cracker Barrel😃 we didn’t visit this Cracker Barrel and the one we visited seemed a bit run down and the food wasn’t great but we would definitely try them again 😃 maybe they are updating them all as this one looked newer 😃 I still dream of the apple pie I had back in 2016 🤣🤣they didn’t have it on our visit last year 😃 love the shop so much and last August we bought a few tree decorations that were such good value - just 1.99usd 😃 thank you for sharing, it really takes me back 🥰🥰🥰

I'm always amused by Brits inventing 'Ship Biscuits' (Hardtack BTW) in the early 17th century yet having no idea what Biscuits are. Claire might have liked one of the flavored syrups more on her pancakes. It really elevates them.
I'm glad that liked Cracker Barrel's breakfast. My wife's family is planning on invading the one in Troy, Illinois in the near future. CB is my go to place for comfort food.

Hey Victoria & Claire! Cracker Barrel is one of my favorites. For breakfast I typically get the Old Timer breakfast - my eggs scrambled with cheese - with hashbrown casserole. The tots version is equally as good. Not fond of the sausage there. If our trips sync up in the future, I need to take you to my favorite US breakfast place, Waffle House. It’s sooooo good!
American breakfast pork sausage is noticeably different from a typical Cumberland sausage you’d get on a British fry up. I prefer the US-style, but they are both good.
Hi Victoria hope you’re well I really want to meet you one day and do a Disney World Trip together that would be my dream great vlog as always btw what do you mean by over easy eggs
I used to LOVE Cracker Barrel and would eat there a couple of times a week. Twenty five years ago I moved to a state that doesn't have any. Unfortunately their reputation has gotten so bad in the meantime so I am probably not missing out!!
The truth is that Cracker Barrel food is pretty awful. Real Southerners (i.e., "crackers") eat elsewhere. That's why CB is closing franchises and why its stock price has been falling.

Victoria, in case you're not familiar with Louisiana's Cajun cuisine, beignets are a triangle-shaped French doughnut--sooo good.
Cracker Barrel is like the showcase of rural modern southern Americana.

One thing that is, apparently, unique to America is that we have large portions with the expectation that you will take the leftovers home.
