  • Just before I left for my Great Migration Photography Tour in Tanzania, I purchased a new Panasonic Lumix GH6. I used it with the Leica/Panasonic 100-400mm zoom, in tandem with my trusty Lumix G9 with 12-60mm. This video looks at the experience of travelling with these two great cameras working side by side, with some first impressions on the GH6. I shot mostly stills but you will see a few video samples as well. Enjoy and be sure to SUBSCRIBE for more on my Panasonic Lumix experiences.

    I have both of these as well. I bought the Gh6 99% for video but knew it would be able to take great pictures as well. I went on a 2 week trip recently and only took the GH6. I got great video AND photos and didn't feel like I missed out by just having the GH6. To be honest, I use my G9 for video more than photo. Anyway, great video and amazing pictures!

    Nice videos thanks. The issue with not seeing sharp previews is they same as with the S1. The work around is to shoot in RAW+JPG then you get the hi res JPG as your preview.

      I agree, this workaround works fine on the G9.
      I guess that the GH6 reads the raw file instead of relying on the embedded jpeg inside the raw file.

    About reviewing photos. In my olympus when i shoot raw only it gives me review for small jpg inculded inside RAW file so its same story hard to tell its in pefect focus. It changes when i use RAW+jpg so it review high res jpg file. Maybe its same case with G9.

    Regarding the BBF adjustment, I have the same issue when I go from using the S5 to the G9. The S5 has the same AF Lock placement as the GH6 so when I switch to my G9 I often find myself hitting the focus area button. I wish they would stick with just one setup!

  • @levscape

    00:06:53 I suspect the embedded sidecar image of the GH6 is a higher resolution than the G9, or the GH6 opens the full RAW image on review. On the G9 if you shoot RAW + JPG (Low Quality), the review image will be the JPG and you can then zoom all the way in. The disadvantage is that you take up space with the JPG.

    Hi Andrew, regarding your remark about the G9 leaning towards magenta , I have adjusted my G9 in camera W B setting which has given me the colours I want /natural colours straight out of the camera. Give it a go.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks for the tip. I am aware I could do this, but because I shoot RAW I can do the colour correction pretty easily in post production. So I never really bothered. It would be more of an issue now that I expect to be shooting more video on the GH6. I know almost nothing about editing video, so the fact the colours come out much better straight out of camera is a bonus.
      Your message has given me a reason to go back and look at the WB settings on the G9 and maybe make some adjustments (i.e. time to stop being so lazy!) so thank you.

    I’ve had my GH6 from the very first day it was released, and it’s still’s images were superior to my GH4 and GH5.
    This week I bought a second-hand G9 and was pleasantly surprised to find that the G9 takes superior images to my GH6 especially with my100-400mm lens.
    I’m amazed that a 5 year old camera at almost a quarter the price of my GH6 out performs it for photos.

    Thanks so much for your GH6 introduction and love all your videos and photos! I had my G9 about 1yr ago, works beautifully for wildlife/birds. However, I need to learn about how to do a good video before planning a major trip to Africa within 1-2 years. Do I need to consider to get GH6? Thank you!☺️

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  2 роки тому +1

      The G9 is great for video. Note the elephant clip at the start of this video was shot on the G9. The GH6 does shoot at higher quality and has impressive specs, but as a stills photographer I am finding there is a huge learning curve to tackle video. I would say if video is your primary goal, then take a look at the GH6. If you are mainly after still photos with a bit of video thrown in, then you will be very happy with what you get from the G9.

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  Рік тому +1

      HI Steven, I think it stacks up really well against full frame cameras, thanks to that 25mpx sensor but also the quality of the Leica Panasonic lenses. That is as long as you are close enough to the subject for a good clean shot...I feel the only limitation is that the photos can't take as much cropping as a full-frame image. On the other hand, thanks to the 2x crop factor, the don't need as much cropping.

    Awesome stuff mate :) I have the G9 and I love the colours I get from it, but I love to shoot video as well. only thing holding me back in buying the GH6 is the AF in video mod. How did you find the AF when shooting video?

    • @naturesimagephotography
      @naturesimagephotography  2 роки тому +3

      I really didn't do much video but found it worked well whenever I did. By all reports it is an improvement on the G9. Other brands love to criticize the Lumix focus system but if you are sticking within Panasonic, it seems each new model and each new firmware updates makes it a little better. I haven't had issues with it but only limited use so far.

      I have the sense that it's a bit better, but t's hard to say as I was never able to shoot a subject, then change lenses to shoot again. So I wasn't able to make a like-for-like comparison.
