I think MDR is the ultimate benchmark for Indian music. Not heard anyone coming near to this master except Mallikarjun Mansur or Mali.. maybe TNR too... Can't think of anyone else...

The kalapramanams particularly mantara stayi nobody can give such a life as mdr used to give. He was a dakshinamurthy of music,who can replace him. The contemporary musicians sing for money to present themsellves with lavish jewelleris and costly sarees. There is no nadopasana. How can clasical music survive.
Why bring in ladies? Very sexist. There are so many male singers whose sruthi goes off -, except I dont think it makes them lesser musicians. Why do we need to decry others to praise one person? MDR is of course good. Who doubts that
Most musicians today DO seem to have less Sruthi suddham. But it's not especially in female musicians. But there are still a handful of consummate musicians who will be remembered as the legends of tomorrow.
I'm a mad fan of MSD. My father Shri P.N.Venkatrama Iyer used to tell us that MSD was called ' Tholla Kutty' meaning ' boy with heavy voice' in Palakkad in his early days, and Chembai directed him to Tiger Varadha chari.
