It takes time to understand and appreciate MDRs music. When I used to listen to collection albums initially MDR tracks were skipped. Even though I liked his deep voice couldn't come in terms with singing style. Years later MDR is the only Carnatic musician I listen to apart from from Mali. So won't blame some one who can't stand his music. But surprised to hear negative remarks about his voice. Even master politician Semmangudy had said MDRs was the most complete 'Shareeram'. It will take Mylapore accountants who are addicted to MMI and SSIs nasal voice and GNBs disco another century to comprehend MDR. No wonder people who wanted soulful music turned to Hindustani. Good to see TMK bringing in some change.

Good point on how MDR is an acquired ecstasy to hear. But please watch what you have to say about GNB. GNB's music was not just about speed : much as the lesser educated critcs appreciated. It is a whole some experience, if you understand the precision he would deal every phrase and sanchara with. I would call that the regal path to Carnatic. TMK is yelling he's bringing a change, people have done that without any noise in the past.

Winston Palliyil the voice of gnb is something that satisfies every criteria of our sangeeta sastram. Mdr had a slow tempo which is his greatest virtue, yet all and sundry can't hear him. Gnb was at the opposite side. His manodharmam comes out of a great sadhana. Indian system values all variations of adaptation.

Calling tmk (his name doesn't deserve the courtesy of capitalisation) a musician is an insult to music.

@@rosybuddy28 TMK continues to sing extremely well, no doubt. Yet not sure why he has been specifically mentioned here as a bearer of soulful music. And for that, why necessarily move to Hindustani is even more unclear.

The "Brahman" in his voice touches your soul.
To the naysayers: if you don't have any thing to learn from the great man, just leave him alone and move on.
A perfect male voice has a thundering bass and a smooth baritone.
Its quite natural for tenor singers and listeners to feel uncomfortable in the company of bass & baritone. Similarly vice versa.
Bit its unfortunate that young people who are nowhere in the firmament of music world hurl lowly abuses at a divine artist who still in 2020 fetches 30k likes, that too for a carnatic recording.
    Give respect and take respect.

Dr Anoop , in the south , every person from a few communities takes up Music / dance and have not come to music in earnest and hence their understanding of the Music is only to that little extent. By virtue of their training they are inclined to listen regularly and yet not identify a soulful music from the mundane or above average. The MDR treats ( rather respectes) a raag is incomparable .

The Sahityam split in Mdr’s rendering is simply outstanding e.g. samaja - vara gamana and kala ateeta vikhyata ( famous beyond time). Marvelous!

A listener and having had the opportunity to meet MDR in Bangalore. MDR was a transcendental yogi of music. He would uplift his ardent listeners to a peaceful state of bliss as depicted here in Saamaja Varagamana. Or. his rendering Bhavayami in raagamalika ( especially last stanza Kalitha vara, where the scene of Rama Pattabhishekha, as though you are witnessing right there a la, David Copperfield's illusion).Or all the stanzas of mangalam, Pavamana suthudu. No wonder Germans were fascinated as to how a human voice can touch such corners of music and were studying his voice. You may watch the German UA-cam of an elephant walking synchronized to his Tanam rendition. (German TV at his death). One only had to watch the happiness and enjoyment and interaction with his music by his accompanying artists like TN Krishnan or Lalgudi Jayaraman, or MSG or Chalaikudi Narayana Swamy on Violin, or on Mridangam by the likes of Palghat Mani Iyer , Umalapuram Shivaraman, Vellore Ramabhadran, TVG etc. I can go on and on. Such a wonderful music from his 'Kalpana' flowing through his heart and emanating from his voice. His compositions of Saagara Shayana etc are further validations of his Genius. Music academy did not recognize his unique inimitable voice and style in not conferring 'Sangeetha Kalaanidhi' ( 1983-84 politics) as they have done to KJ Yesudas ( Another great Yogi)A listener and having had the opportunity to meet at the behest of Naadoja S.R.Ramaswamy ( my uncle in Bangalore) and listened to many concerts in Bangalore including a Chamber Music Concert at Gokhale institute of Public Affairs in the presence of Dr.D.V.Gundappa, The Doyen of Karnatak Literature and other stalwarts of that time.
