Goethe's ideas, writings also makes us feel bigger, more noble as human beings. Maybe he's not as well known in the English speaking countries, than here, in my country, Hungary, And Stephen Fry is great in this sense too.
God damn! If I could wish for one thing, it would be to spend an evening with Stephen Fry. Granted, I'd obviously feel like an idiot, but if I could convince myself to be myself it would be such an amazing (and enlightening) experience.
Between ages 7 and 12 he was addicted to Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. What an amazing person. If only I'd been interested in books like that at that age ... sigh. Stephen Fry is an international treasure, such a down to earth intellectual giant, a talented actor, and just a good human being.
When I think about it I can say that, personally, Fry achieves this very well - to make people feel great in the presence of his greatness. This is something that Christopher Hitchens, for example, did not achieve nor aim for. While great himlself, Hitchens towering intellect shadowed you and pushed you aside, "pwned" you and won the debate, leaving you feeling less intelligent and a little dirty. People like Fry somehow rise with the occasion - and they lift you up as well along with them.
As I was originally brought to Stephen by way of the movie Wilde, in which he plays the title character so marvelously, I must agree. These two are definitely among my favorite human beings. And I would like to say that Stephen makes me feel about myself exactly the way he described Wilde. Whenever I watch or hear anything he says, I can't help but feel more intelligent, more clever, and more vindicated in my ideas. If I had to pick one person on earth to give a hug to, it would be Stephen Fry
Couldn't have agreed more.Although Hitch is one of the very few people who have ever appealed to me,I will agree that his intellect makes you question yourself "Oh,I was stupid to think that!".
I love his idea of greatness, and I think he achieves it well. I've always felt, after hearing, reading, or seeing anything done by Stephen Fry, I feel wittier and smarter and finer. Without having ever been in his company. I can only say that if I ever get a chance to meet the man, mine would be a life well lived :p
loving all the positive comments here. for me i think its a great injustice that we have stephen fry and great in the same youtube title and only 10k views. he deserves better.
Ignoring trolls works, but I also found that if you dox the person then message them their own home address and details on who lives at the address, that does stop them.
I think there were two sides to Hitch. He was could be certainly be very combative, as you describe. But if you've ever read Letters to a Young Contrarian, you know he could also be very nurturing and uplifting.
Stephen Fry is intelligent enough to communicate his own thoughts so that they are relevant to you as an individual. In words that some of you knuckle dragging morons can understand, he has some of the same thoughts as you do, only he can express them better than you can. A great person in your life does not intimidate you, he inspires you, pulls you up to more than you are now, encourages and inspires you to learn more and to do more.
Why would you think I would not know that? Some people think that Ireland is not part of the British Isles! Even in Rugby The British Isles side is now called the British and Irish Lions. I consider they should be called the British Isles lions as it was. I am Welsh but I am British!
yes he is. that's amazing that you've noticed that, good on you. it is entirely possible for gay people to be indescribably brilliant and still be a homosexual. sexuality has no bearing on the quality of ones character, for example just because you happen to be straight doen't mean that you are any better or worse a human being than he is. the thing that makes you a worse human than him, is that you care about his gayness at all or think that it diminishes his character
it's nice to have the experience of someone being thoughtfully and unpretentiously ponderous, but has the negative side effect of reminding some of us how completely worthless we are. Not all y'all, of course.
Stephen Fry is an amazing and inspiring person. I love watching and listening to him. He makes me feel wittier and brighter for having spent "time" with him.
Ah, didn't realise that is how you meant it. Yes Ireland the island is a part of the British Isles :). The reason I said was because 'Britain' includes northern ireland, but not Ireland the island :P.
Fry is a pompous, elitist idiot. Having stolen a coat and a wallet, he got caught because a hotel clerk realised he was a thief. Fry’s take on this was not that the hotel clerk was smart enough to spot him, and he was thick enough to get caught - but that the clerk was a backwoodsman who didn’t think such s young man could have money. You may admire the thief. I have more admiration for the hotel clerk who didn’t have Fry’s privilege and advantages, but could spot a smug thief.
Well it depends if you are defining Britain as the island upon which England, Scotland and Whales are or if you are defining it as the British Isles, if it is the British Isles then yes Ireland (as an island, not as two political powers) is indeed part of Britain.
it's really nice that in two sentences you've managed to invalidate your argument. the fact that you say there is no such thing as racism and then continue on to make a racist slur is just wonderful stuff. you've done quite a bit of work for me on that one. good job, you just lost yourself the argument. i really appreciate it, thanks.
@krstcmjns honestly, just start reading some classics or general things ur interested in, if you get hold of a book you like you wont be able to put it away! when reading it is like youre in another world
I'm a language professor, I believe a rough translation goes as follows "Did Stephen Fry go to university? He thinks this buffoonery is fact, unlike myself. Every morning I take an objective viewpoint about everything and everyone in my meager existence, excepting, of course, all those I consider beneath my impressive intellect.
Maybe it's because Oscar Wilde was Irish and not British that he didn't make you feel less clever, less funny and less witty :-D Just thought i'd remind everyone of that fact in case Stephen managed to confuse you all there!
@dar3keternal No thats just completely wrong. Northern reland is part of britain, the rest of ireland is in no way whatsoever a part of britain. Saying the uk and britain are not the same is like saying bread and toast are different. Ultimately, there is no difference. And one more time, ireland is not a part of britain... in any way, shape or form.
Translation: Did Stephen Fry go to school? He's thick as pigshit not like me, I take a sober look at world. Everyone on earth is my best mate. Except all the wankers. There, am I hired?
Ahem. Did Stephen Fry go to school? He's thick as pigshit, not like me, I talk sober. Look at world; everyone on earth is my best mate... Hic... Except all the wankers. I think is what he meant :P
i've really stopped arguing with you on any moral or intelectual basis anymore, now it's just fun. while i agree with the man on his statements on the hypocritical nature of the government in that particular case, i would like to point out that the woman he was talking about just so happened to fit the description given to her ideas and character were entirely justified. she just so happens to be a racist and a bigot, just get over it man.
"Did Stephen Fry go to school? He's (thinking/talking) pig shit not like me I talk sober look at worlds everyone on Earth my best mate... (???)... Except all the wankers" There's the spelling... Now to fix the grammar and sentence structure. Is Steven Fry as educated as he appears? He speaks foul and odious lies, whereas I speak in a sober manner. I consider everyone on Earth to be a close friend (excluding the wankers, of course.) From there, you're on your own, Oxford.
Goethe's ideas, writings also makes us feel bigger, more noble as human beings.

Feel like an idiot?
Fry is a puerile, pathetic, privileged dimwit.
If you’re impressed by him you are an idiot.
That was very moving. Stephen Fry is never short of good advice or insightful commentary. Thanks.
When I think about it I can say that, personally, Fry achieves this very well - to make people feel great in the presence of his greatness.
This is something that Christopher Hitchens, for example, did not achieve nor aim for.

All I can say is that Stephen must be truly great because every time I hear him speak I feel infinitely smarter.
As I was originally brought to Stephen by way of the movie Wilde, in which he plays the title character so marvelously, I must agree. These two are definitely among my favorite human beings. And I would like to say that Stephen makes me feel about myself exactly the way he described Wilde. Wodehouse, Wilde, and Fry! All brilliant! Thanks all three for so much good work.
You make me feel rather tall indeed, Stephen. (May I hug you?)
There is no one else in the universe that I'd rather just sit down and talk to more.
loving all the positive comments here.

i don't know about you guys, but i felt in a better mood after watching this

I wish there were more "Guardians of Language" in the public's eye like Steven Fry.

Why does it say "Comedian" at the beginning?
It should say "Perfect"
Stephen Fry is an amazing and inspiring person. I love watching and listening to him. He makes me feel wittier and brighter for having spent "time" with him.
Ah, didn't realise that is how you meant it. Yes Ireland the island is a part of the British Isles :). The reason I said was because 'Britain' includes northern ireland, but not Ireland the island :P.
Good work Professor Zandonus! Your check will arrive by mail, in three to seven business days.
First: I did enjoy your joke, it is funny!
Second: I liked Zandonus' comment, I was continuing FantasticHermitCrab's joke.
Stephen Fry, without a doubt, is my new hero.
Fry is a pompous, elitist idiot. Having stolen a coat and a wallet, he got caught because a hotel clerk realised he was a thief.

When I read this comment aloud I sounded like a hospitalised Sean Connery attempting to speak Dutch.
Fantastic! You can start on monday!
It normally means in the political context of the entity of the UK, or the island of "Great Britain". It seldom means the British Isles.
Stephen Fry is great.
there is no wishing, aim for it and do it if you so intend, wishing is to vague, aiming is a better bet in my opinion
We've currently got Oxford University's top heads working intensively to figure out what the heck you just said.
it's really nice that in two sentences you've managed to invalidate your argument. the fact that you say there is no such thing as racism and then continue on to make a racist slur is just wonderful stuff. you've done quite a bit of work for me on that one. good job, you just lost yourself the argument. i really appreciate it, thanks.
What adjective does he use to describe Wilde's intellect?
ironically, stephen fry is doing the same thing that his influences were
He's such a great man. Definitely my favourite human being. One day I hope to meet him.
What an amazing sentiment. I aspire to it
What a wonderful man, his ideas are like a light bulb. :)
No, he’s a smug, privileged thief and a pompous idiot.
The average 7-12 year-old in Britain today has trouble reading the newspapers let alone reading a novel.
I never got an invite to that lesson either.
steven fry is god or near proximity of what i would like god to be if god existed or maybe he does and hes steben fry
@krstcmjns honestly, just start reading some classics or general things ur interested in, if you get hold of a book you like you wont be able to put it away! when reading it is like youre in another world
@LatestUFOSightings And I heard he did a smashing job playing Oscar Wilde as well.
A gentlemen, we have!
Thanks
it's interesting, intelligent people who make those around them also feel intelligent. Apparently richard feynman was the same way
Um, that's sort of what I said. I didn't say Ireland wasn't part of the British Isles, but it isn't part of the UK.
incredible wisdom
I wish i could speak as well as him..
@vinivinus It is, but on there other hand I've seen nearly all footage of fry, Hitchens and some others :-P Has it's payoffs.
Anyone else hear the phone vibrate at 2:20?
your comments say a lot about how your brain is working at this
particular moment
They say of the Acropolis where the Parthenon is XD
You do a good Oscar Wilde!
Ireland is a part of the British Isles.
Some people can't be bullied, bartered with or bought; they don't want anything rational like money. Some men just want to watch the world burn.

Ireland is part of Britain, the UK and Britain are not the same.
Have another one, mate...
There is one thing worse than being witty. And that is, not being witty.
@moewahba35 Agree. Fry is a real inspiration as a guardian of the English language.
and you're my best mate too Jake. MWAH!
you sir deserve a qualification in piss language translation :P
He describes him as a "towering intellect"
@gazirinth me. Turkey =) I'm reading hippopotamus these days =)
Ireland is part of the British Isles but not part of the UK!
@vinivinus **Ah I'm sorry that sentence came out funny, and these have no edit button.
P.G. Wodehouse!
Time to go read Oscar Wilde!
Me too.
@krstcmjns I do. And it's amazing. And you can build it up! Just need to find the right books to get you started!
Maybe it's because Oscar Wilde was Irish and not British that he didn't make you feel less clever, less funny and less witty :-D Just thought i'd remind everyone of that fact in case Stephen managed to confuse you all there!

@krstcmjns Me too. I wish i had a reading addiction instead of youtube addiction. It's exhausting.
Once again but in English? Pretty please?
@Jotto999 Ah, yes. True. True.
@krstcmjns
You don't always get hooked on your first go.
Repeated use leads to tolerance, which leads to addiction.
Now Nabokov on the other hand.....
The irony of your comment hurts.
No, The Republic of Ireland is not part of Britain or the UK.
He's trolling
@krstcmjns Me too, this crack addiction is a real drag.
@quinnmcguee
next to Benedict Cumberbatch
He was pretending to be drunk.
*was*. Not any longer.
@krstcmjns Then get one. It take one good book to get hooked.
Translation: Did Stephen Fry go to school? He's thick as pigshit not like me, I take a sober look at world. Everyone on earth is my best mate. Except all the wankers. There, am I hired?
@quinnmcguee I aspire to be like him.
Some people just want to watch the world burn.
Is he really worth it?
I don't remember, sorry.
I think maybe he was drunk? Or had just been repeatedly dropped on his head.
Implying Christian's beliefs are any more valid.
comedian...ha!
Ahem. Did Stephen Fry go to school? He's thick as pigshit, not like me, I talk sober. Look at world; everyone on earth is my best mate... Hic... Except all the wankers. I think is what he meant :P

Read your Bibles to see if these things are true!
