It's definitely worth the money. I did a bunch of research before jumping into this and it's been totally worth it. Although this interface can be used in different ways with different instruments/mics, it really is an interface that was designed with guitarists in mind. If you want to tweak *guitar-specific* inputs, use a DAW to record/playback, add effects, VST's, impulse responses, record and send a dry re-amp signal out all at the same time, - this is what you want. It's a proven, tested solution bundled with Ableton Live and Amplitube, making this an awesome unit. The integrated MIDI control opens up thousands of possibilities. I've got two of these units now; one for the studio and one that I use live. Enough said 👍
I purchased this unit [used] for around USD 200 in July 2021. This is a good unit, period. I use it with my two notes captor, which is connected to my Hughes and Kettner statesman EL34 head and it works great, with no problem at all. Thanks for your insight, Henning. It is always much appreciated. 🙏
If you lower the process buffer and usb you can get the latency down to almost nothing BUT, if you are running a CPU heavy VST like (NATAS) you might have to increase this buffer otherwise it will start giving you issues. My advice record the DI track first with low latency, then increase the buffer size when your gonna start adding EQ and Compression, the more FX you add on to a track the more processing power it needs to do = more latency.
In all fairness, I wouldnt ever recommend tracking a guitar, or whatever instrument with much effects or processing before its track is solid on beat and a very clean DI track. Since being solid on the rhythm and making sure the DI track is as clean as can be, is much more important than processing effects at that point in time. You really want to eliminate as much noise and flaws as possible that other wise need to be combatted with EQ tricks (which might mess up your tone in de end). Secondly, I would like to add, that many (especially legacy) VST have bad mulithread optimization and might introduce even more latency due to that. Or worse, sound artifacts. And from experience, I know not every DAW is equal in how they're allocating resources spent by the VST. Especially if you're also on an older licensed DAW. Also take in consideration, that running software like guitar pro might introduce even more latency. If you're building a new PC for sound engineering, you would preferably opt for a current flagship cpu that has best single thread performance over more cores. Doesn't matter if Intel or AMD is on top right now, they're both great brands at the moment but they both have their strong and weak stuf , if you're building a new pc that is and you're really on a budget. (And trust me, if you're just a little bit serious about this hobby, it's probably much better to DIY PC (or hackintosh) instead of apple, not hating on apple btw. I love my Macbookpro for software engineering and certain tasks, they're great. But if you have a hard requirement for as much performance as possible, probably better to DIY. Just go for best single thread performance and thank me later. Don't get me wrong, more cores GOOD right now. But if, say, a 20 core has better single thread performance than a 24 core CPU, then you might want to consider the 20 core over the 24 core, in my opinion. More core = faster render times, but is this really important if you're tracking? Faster thread = better real time performance. (Just examples, grain of salt you know). Most applications nowadays scale exceedingly great with multithread, but you might still be using years old licenses/legacy software that isn't updated to modern standards. Or your DAW might not be too great with resource management.
I've been waiting for my Axe I/O to arrive (gotta love shortages) and have been watching a ton of reviews on this product. This is the first one that really EXPLAINS how all of it ties together and works. So thanks :)
There's a probability the latency issue you have in Cubase is due to a different plugin that is adding latency compensation(additional latency to the buffer), a lot of waves and izotope plugins do that.
Ordered this. Spent a week checking AI devices, this is the most versatile from a guitarist pov without too high a price. But I mostly bought this because you mentioned F-Zero a NES favourite..
This interface and a midi controller pedal like the Morningstar Engineering MC6/MC8, RJM Mastermind LT, Source Audio Soleman, etc could be a cool combo for a home studio working on a budget
18:30 "I think we're good now" while the input level is clipping in the interface like hell lol. He was looking at the level recorded by Amplitube which lowered the level so he didn't see a problem
I ordered the axe i/o this morning. I Will probably use this video as an instruktion. Glad that I probably didnt threw my money out The window. Thanks.
It looks cool, but for that price? I'll keep my Focusrite 18i8. For direct guitar, and even with pedals, the Focusrite pre amps are amazing. It also has lightpipe expansion, but no word clock, but it does have SPDIF. I've been running pedals into BiasFx with the digital pre amp and tone stack off, and it sounds crazy good. This box seems late to the party and overpriced IMO, but your demo, as always, is top notch. You are one of my most trusted channels Henning. You always keep it real. Cheers: )
As someone just getting into this whole digital recording setup (I was always a pedal and amp guy before), this thing was actually a godsend for me. You aren't just buying an interface, you're buying an entire production setup for recording guitar (minus like headphones and cables, which I obviously already had). You get the interface, you get Ableton Live 10 Lite, Amplitube 4 Deluxe (sometimes MAX, if there's a deal, which I did get), 10 T-RackS plugins, and a few other things. If I had just got the basic Amplitube 4, I would've been happy, but I didn't, I got the full package. If you don't want or need any of that stuff... then yeah, it's probably a little pricey and you could spend a bit more and get a much more capable interface, though it probably won't have the Z-Tone impedance matching, which does make quite a bit of difference when dialing in tone (unless all your guitars use active pickups, which IS something to think about if all you do is metal).
Hi man! Love your shows and demos. Do you find the gain on the Axe I/O is poorly graduated? Mine ups the gain loads towards the end of the dial's travel - an unfortunate characteristic that has me looking to maybe switch to another interface. Speaking of which, is there an audio interface in a similar price bracket that you might recommend checking out? Thanks, Sacha

Can you record dry di whilst tracking/listening to Amplitube plugin's wet effected signal? Then later send a wet signal to a power amp. Example - use Axe I/0 with a Boss Katana MK2 power amp input or alternatively to the power amp FX loop return on other amps or does Amplitube only work as a complete signal path only for PA or Studio Monitors? Can you seperate the preamp and use your own impulse responses or real power amp and cabinet like you can with modellers?
Great video! Looking for an audio interface for live looping and modulations of my classical guitar with the help of an active contact pickup and Ableton live. Since I am bit on a budget, before spending a great amount on top quality PA, can the re-amp feature be used to perform live with my acoustic amp?
I got the Axe I/O solo version (which is the same but with less inputs) but has anyone else noticed the amp out (not using plugins, just DI) feature significantly reduces the sound/gain when reamping or even just playing through it? Maybe I'm not routing something properly on the DAW, but it sounds very gated and reduced even with gain full on the control panel, phaser, amp etc.. Any advice?
It's possible to use this interface with IPhone Amplitube 4, Garageband ou Bias FX, 1 channel before the preamp head and 2 channel after the preamp, in the effect loop, like 4 cable method ? Will have sound "Latency" problem ? I would like to replace my effects processor rack. Could you make a demonstration video ?
So this thing in an apartment with a boss tube amp expander and some nice amps ands your options are pretty much limitless right? That sounds like a crazy cool setup.
Perhaps they’re looking to cover the cost of the software that comes with it as well as the reamp box feature, which would be an added expense with any other interface 🤔
This has two preamps, but it's really four inputs because it's aimed at guitarists. Most two preamp models you'd have to pick mic or DI, where here you can do four inputs total. That impedance + reamp features alone will cost you $200-$300 from single solution products. (Look at Cloudlifter or Radial Reamp) Let's look at 4 input USB interfaces. Behringer/Tascam/M-Audio are cheaper and we know why. Presonus makes some decent stuff, but their Studio series is cheaply made with fewer features than this. Just $50 less. The Steinberg is an okay product, so that's a preference thing, just $50 less. Once we get to Focusrite and Mackie you aren't saving money. Yeah, you can find two preamp interfaces at half the cost, but they won't have the functionality of just the hardware alone. Not that I can see. Add to this the software, if that's your thing, and this offers a lot. If their software isn't your thing, you've wasted time even considering it.
Yes but I already own Amplitube 4 with all the add-ons, and a Focusrite 2i4, and except for the built in tuner, it can do anything that this box can, but even the tuner is totally redundant when there is a much more accurate tuner inside Amplitube. As for the re-amping, an output doesn't have to say AMP on it to do this. Amplitube is worth every penny, I agree with that. Don't get your panties in a bunch people, buy what you like, I am just expressing an opinion that I don't see such groundbreaking stuff here.
Agreed. A simple 1-2 Focurite or ever Behringer interface with BiasFX, and a good IR loader would work just as good, and would save coin for more useful gear.
If you use the amp out simultaneously and record both a direct signal and miked cab (as you mentioned), is that "amp" out signal undergoing AD and DA conversion or just being split, er duplicated, in the analog domain?
Could i use the two inputs as a stereo guitar (after my stereo delay & reverb), and run Two Notes Wall Of Sound with it in stereo? I do this exact thing right now using my Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with normal line input, and it works great but im running low on computing power when i want to record video and audio at the same time with this setup (i get 2ms latency)
I believe you could, but I don't know that it would help if your computing power is low. Outside of buying a more powerful PC, you could look at interfaces with DSP built in for many audio tasks and leave the PC to handle the video. UA, Antelope, come to mind. I don't think this AXE IO has DSP.
@@jayquickfinger I didn't think he was complaining. I think he said his current setup gives him 2ms and he wants to add video, so he's worried about possible additions.
@@jayquickfinger im not, it's just when i record it vith video and some backing tracks, im on the edge of my computer capabilities, and it makes sound glitches sometimes, there are a few glitches on my yt videos that sound like microphone clipping, and it only happens when i use video recording software along with the W.O.S. plugin and record video with guitar and backing tracks together at the same time. I've been looking for some DAW that could take all the IR processing on itself, IR processors like CAB M, or NUX SolidStudio dont fit me because i love having stereo guitar signal, from reverb/delay up to having two cabs and mics set in stereo field in W.O.S. unfortunately Two Notes CAB and CAB M, and also NUX Solid Studio and BluGuitar Blubox, are all mono. That's why i nedd to still use the plugin, my PC is fast enough to process them. I was looking for some camera that has a line in or mic input, to record video without usin a computer but it seems to be a professional grade feature in this kind of equipment.
@@alexbreyer6921 Exactly, i was asking about possibly use AXE I/O to completely take over the IR calculations, so my PC would only record sound and video. 12 years ago, when i was starting on YT this was not an issue, because i was using POD 2.0, straight into my PC sound card line input, and video was recorded on my old Canon compact camera, with video signal sent directly from it's S-Video output to my PC TV card, which received and recorded this signal as it was a TV station, along with my guitar signal and the backing track :D Happy times ;)

An audio interface for guitarists that`s incapable of recording your cab with both dynamic and condenser mic at the same time? I mean that`s the most common recording technique for guitar cabs- an SM57 + some condenser, am I right?

This continuous comparison between interfaces that are part of different market segments is really tiring. UA don't produce interfaces, are real computers that perform the functions that other interfaces allow PCs to do. I'll give you an example: if I have a Mac Pro, I have a computer more powerful than the 1 core of the UA Arrow, which is the UA entry level interface, and still costs 100 euros more than AXE I / O. To reduce the latency to 1 ms, when already under 20 ms latency it's imperceptible to the human ear, why don't I have to use my Mac at maximum power? Then, on UA Arrow you can only use a few plugins, while with my Mac I use sequences of dozen plugins, on Ableton, and often produced by different companies. Which you can't do with UA. That is, you can't put a U-HE reverb after the amp and before the cabinet ...to give just one example. Beautiful products, but if you don't have a Octo core Satellite, which costs 1200 euros more, you do almost nothing with the Arrow. Because with UA you are eventually forced to use only UAD plugins. And they cost ...
such a strange tick you have with the constant lip sucking. You're on an open mic, you really need to control that, I am trying to listen to you here and not get my ears blown out.

Great review! I am going to get one asap. please, reply me: Can I record four tracks simultaneously? I will try to record a rehearsal drums.
no, this is a two input interface
Oooh... now if the round trip is good this might be the one.
Well amplitude sounds like utter ass :')
If you use the amp out simultaneously and record both a direct signal and miked cab (as you mentioned), is that "amp" out signal undergoing AD and DA conversion or just being split, er duplicated, in the analog domain?
No idea
If you ordered one - IK dont have any made and you will have to wait - basically what they told me after I paid for 2day.
I heard they might have fixed a couple of the issues on the new ones so maybe it's a lucky thing. I ordered mine yesterday.
Could i use the two inputs as a stereo guitar (after my stereo delay & reverb), and run Two Notes Wall Of Sound with it in stereo?
I do this exact thing right now using my Sound Blaster Audigy Rx with normal line input, and it works great but im running low on
computing power when i want to record video and audio at the same time with this setup (i get 2ms latency)
I believe you could, but I don't know that it would help if your computing power is low. Outside of buying a more powerful PC, you could look at interfaces with DSP built in for many audio tasks and leave the PC to handle the video. UA, Antelope, come to mind. I don't think this AXE IO has DSP.
are you seriously complaining about 2ms?
@@jayquickfinger I didn't think he was complaining. I think he said his current setup gives him 2ms and he wants to add video, so he's worried about possible additions.
@@jayquickfinger im not, it's just when i record it vith video and some backing tracks, im on the edge of my computer capabilities,
and it makes sound glitches sometimes, there are a few glitches on my yt videos that sound like microphone clipping, and it
only happens when i use video recording software along with the W.O.S. plugin and record video with guitar and backing tracks
together at the same time.
I've been looking for some DAW that could take all the IR processing on itself, IR processors like CAB M, or NUX SolidStudio
dont fit me because i love having stereo guitar signal, from reverb/delay up to having two cabs and mics set in stereo field in W.O.S.
unfortunately Two Notes CAB and CAB M, and also NUX Solid Studio and BluGuitar Blubox, are all mono.
That's why i nedd to still use the plugin, my PC is fast enough to process them.
I was looking for some camera that has a line in or mic input, to record video without usin a computer but it seems to be
a professional grade feature in this kind of equipment.
@@alexbreyer6921 Exactly, i was asking about possibly use AXE I/O to completely take over the IR calculations, so my PC would only record sound and video.
12 years ago, when i was starting on YT this was not an issue, because i was using POD 2.0, straight into my PC sound card line input, and video was recorded
on my old Canon compact camera, with video signal sent directly from it's S-Video output to my PC TV card, which received and recorded this signal as it was
a TV station, along with my guitar signal and the backing track :D Happy times ;)
But: which signal is sent into the real amp. Line or Hi Z? …
hi Z
@@EytschPi42 always rtfm, which I did. Thanks for your reply. Do you know any device which offers the control of HiZ Inputs like described in the manual? Interesting approach though. Thanks for your channel!!
Can somebody share what is the roundtrip delay from DAW such as Ableton/Reaver/Logic?
We need to seriously reduce our coffee intake, Henning. ;p
aww don't worry, heart attacks do not result from coffee...
I have a Question! Can this interface be used as a normal interface? As in do i have to use the software included and only that software? or could i use this interface for routing to say biasfx, pod farm or any other guitar amp modeling plugins and not just IK plugins/amplutube deluxe?. For example i have a line 6 ux2 but i do not use pod farm which it recommends but i use amplitube. also would The Steinberg UR-RT2 be a bettor choice over The Axe I/O ?
of course you can use any software with it
Since Amplitube 5 is out do you get the new version or do you get Amplitube 4 ?
That's what I say mmmm
the built in reamp box thing is something that should have been done looooooong ago, btw, is that an ENGL Sovereign II?
Screamer II
@@EytschPi42 Hello! Can you tell me how the interface will work without software (AmpliTube 4 Deluxe 10)? What can be used for free to work with the interface without software?
Hey. How would you rate this against Sono?
Better
@@EytschPi42 Fuck I already ordered Sono and one word from you made me regret it :D
I ve got it for 160$ though and hope reamp alone is worth it.
Looks expensive...?
Hello! Can i use this interface with ipad ? Thanks!
Yes you can
17:33 🤣🤣🤣
20ms latency isn't that very high in comparison to other even lower budget interfaces such as the scarlet 2i2 3rd gen for example ?
I bought it and can't get it to work for nothing
Did you eat bacon before touching that unit 8>) …. better give it away contest
Only Muslims may enter
Which Amps does this thing model ? I don't know of any amp in existence that sound THAT bad : )
it dosent model any amp, its an audio interface and you are hearing either the guitar DI or a software amp (of your choice)
Henning mein lieber...
Decrease your buffer size to 64 and increase your sample rate to 96kHz to reduce your latency. This will give you about 20ms latency, impercievable to the human ear. We can percieve 30 ms and above.
An audio interface for guitarists that`s incapable of recording your cab with both dynamic and condenser mic at the same time? I mean that`s the most common recording technique for guitar cabs- an SM57 + some condenser, am I right?
sure you can... it has 2 mic inputs
@@EytschPi42 So do you do that a lot, recording dynamic mics with phantom power turned on? Because this interface switches 48v for both mic inputs at once, as far as I know.
9:08 your monitors hate you Right then 😂
Line 6 POD Studio UX2 Anyone? and Get yourself a Nural DSP vst bundle with that for 150$ and call it a day...
I bought one and sent it back the next day...there are other units that are better out there
You made me curious, why did you sent it back? I`m asking because I can`t decide between this and the Audient iD14.
Like which ones?
@@Duke_Silver which did you end up getting?
@@jorgeguitar2540 The Axe i/o, and I don`t have any complaints.
@@Duke_Silver I’m trying to see if I’ll get it or keep my Scarlett
I want Linux support
hmmmm...do you really need this device with all the tons of crazy gear you got there behind you? Not very reliable LOL. Excellent video though.
No, I don't need it, but I am not the customer, I am the reviewer!
@@EytschPi42
Oh so you're having all the fun AND getting paid for it. NICE :)
Your wobbly belly made trying to work out what the piss is going on on your T-shirt quite an odd experience. Not an un-enjoyable one, though.
my gosh, how much talking like a papagay
Cheers
